So up until a few patches ago, Fallen Empires were kinda dicks. Cold, aloof, un-cooperative. They also kept to themselves (which i was fine with tbh.. it added to their 'feel'... but w/e)

Now, the Fallen Empires can sometimes 'awaken'.. and do things. In my last couple games, I've been given the exact same start - right next door to a Xenophile FE. Long story short, this FE and me ended up becoming good friends. Eventually, they 'awakened' and.. err.. forcefully suggested that I sign a treaty making me their "Signatory" (underling). I reluctantly accepted... i figured it was sign or die. (Ive also noticed FE's got a serious buff since before the patch.. to the tune of double their former strength!) Anyway, you can't engage in any meaningful diplomacy when your a signatory, so you cant declare war, expand.. etc. All you can really do is sit there, trade, build upto your fleet cap, and.. yeah. You also can't ask for independance (well, you can.. but they'll always say no as the ONLY factor in their decision is "Base reluctance: -50).. and you certainly cant go to war with a 200k empire when you cant expand beyond 60k yourself.

I had reached the point where I was getting sick of it, wasn't sure what I was going to do... war them? Start a new game? My overlord was engaged in a war with my old rival, an evangelizing zealot. I was just about to throw in the towel when I got some alert messages. First was the notice of peace between my overlord and my old rival. Second one was that I had too many planets all the sudden. What the hell... turns out my overlord smashed my old rival and handed me like 3 star systems!

Hopefully he keeps doing that.

Anyone else experience this?

EDIT: Also just realized I probably could've summed up this entire overly-wordy post in a few sentences.. oh well. Sorry about that. lol

Xenophiles are some pretty cool guys. They still let you got to war and Colonize like Awakened Spiritualist Empires right?

No, the Xenophiles become "Benevolent Interventionists".. they're all about galactic peace. They're peacekeepers who keep the peace by stomping the crap outta anyone who wont sign their peace treaty :p You can't declare war at all, or even ask for wormhole access. All you can do is trade. In a way, the game kind of stops.

oh that kinda sucks.... Building up to overthrow them will be hard then. Spiritualists force you to change your Ethos but still let you Colonize and go to war and pretty much everything else.I kinda think that maybe AE's should be nerfed a little bit.

At least you can still colonize. Thralls can declare wars on one another, but they could only watch as I settled in their home systems (from which the Unbidden kicked them out) due to their Colonization Ban.

i was in similar situation. i am individualistic, materialistic xenophile and a fallen fanatical xenophilic empire was right to me. when they awakened, they ask me to sign signatory, but i refused. i've got some serious relation malus, but direct attack did not happen. i entered a federation with my other two big neighbours and we were on good term with awakened. after a while, i left the federation being constantly dragged into wars i wanted not to fight. then, after i managed to stop unbidden almost just by myself (i destroyed one fleet and the gate, while other kept the rest of unbidden fleet busy elsewhere), the awakened empire changed attitude towards me (i do not recall how it is in fact called) and now they are willing to enter federation with me to save the galaxy from crisis. i briefly agreed to join, but i ended up in a golden cage - no possibility to start wars and expand. and due to a bug i was not able to leave. but then another poor empire fell into the same honey-trap and i found you can leave the federation with awakened empire through the diplomacy menu of the other member!! yippie. then i swallowed few xenophobic neighbours and later on, i was able to crush the AE myself (two 300k fleets clashing - the computer had hard time to chew on it and that of mine is not the slowest one) and i took three of its planets leaving it seriously weakened and never able to get back to power. there was also one fallen xenophobic empire which started some kind of war against all of its neighbours and it ended up completely destroyed.

edit: some more info.

I don't really like Wars in Heaven, because unless you resist, the game is basically over. If they keep consistently happening in the mid-game, then there should be a War Against Heaven system by which the subjugated young species are helped to organize and rise up against the Awakened Empires.

When they give you enough planets, you can increase your fleet cap enough to fight and win a war for freedom. Remember 2 things:
1) Fleet strength is not accurate. Design your fleet properly and you can defeat FE fleets up to 60% stronger than your own.
2) You can build up war score by beating up and occupying the FE's other thralls.
