In my current game, I noticed how Poland was virtually reduced to Mazovia, while most of the country was conquered by the Czechs. And I thought: wouldn't it be nice if in this situation, it would somehow revert to being called Mazovia? Like how a country can form Iceland if they have nothing but Iceland, but with duchies. I mean, if Sweden formed Scandinavia and then suddenly lost Denmark and Norway to coalition wars, nobody would call them Scandinavia anymore. Same can be done for France ending up being reduced to one of her minors, to Italy that basically ends up cut back to Tuscany or Lombardy or whoever formed it. To Spain that is nothing but Catalonia. Austria that loses everything except Tyrol or Bohemia would change Tags to Tyrol or Bohemia. Venice that's reduced to Verona would be known as Verona.

You'll ask me "but what's the point?". See, Poland has non-expiring cores on Poland. So if Bohemia conquered everything but one province, Russia can someday just vassalize the rest and reconquer everything, while Mazovian claims would eventually disappear. As a player, it's really easy to vassalize the remnants of kingdoms to annex them in time.

I somewhat agree. However there are examples in history of countries being reduced to a shadow of their former self who clinger to their old glorious names.

Well, currently I can only think about the Eastern Roman Empire, but surely there are others...

Il not sure how the boundary would be drawn, but such a mechanic would be interesting especially for countries exiled very far from home.

Well yes, in game we call it Byzantine Empire, which can form Rome. And if we had 1215 as a starting date, we'd likely have Nicaea, Epirus and Trebizond and Latin Empire as states, all of them claiming to be the real Roman Empire, none of them in fact being it. If France is reduced to Paris, it should still be France. But if Paris is long lost and France only owns Champagne, or Burgundy, or Provence, or Normandy, or Gascony - then they could change tags, if only to make room for the victorious conqueror to assume the throne of France. If Burgundy took Paris and the rest of the country and the actual "France" held out in Dauphiné, that's what they should be referred as. If the Count of Oldenbourg conquers and holds all Denmark except Gotland, moves his capital to Copenhagen and adopts Danish as his culture, the old Danish kings wouldn't be regarded as the Danish kings anymore, but rather as the robber princes of Gotland or something.
