I have a CB against an area but can't declare war because they are "independant". (The area is one of my de jure regions i lost to the hungarians though i still seem to hold the bishop and city there)

Whats odd is that there are other areas where i don't have a CB where them being "Independent" is NOt a reason i can declare war.

Why does them being independent mean i can't declare war?
Any idea what i need to do to be able to declare war?
Also - what stops them being independent?

Thanks

Just to check: are you sure it doesn't say (X) They are independent?

Well you need to declare war to their liege, and if that one isn't independent either, you need to declare war on his liege which will probably the king ;)

So this is not advised when playing with a dynasty that can't match a king's power :p

It's annoying I know, I'm Flanders and for some reason some of my counties were inherited by Germany. I could get 2 back by assasinating some people until my heir was also her heir (guess I got lucky someone didn't get sons), but that other one (Boulogne) is still in German control after 100 years...

Are you sure you're reading the tool tip correctly? The tooptip displays a list of conditions that must be satisfied. The green * or red X says wether these conditions are satisfied or not. So:

[x] Must be Independant

means "they are not independant". In which case you declare war on their boss. Do they have a liege on their character's profile?

edit: Gars beat me to it. I had to explain this to my girlfriend yesterday, she was confused by it as well.

Are you sure that it's not because they're NOT independant, If someone is a vassal then you have to declare war on their leige. I can't think of a situation where being independant would stop you declaring war

You cannot DOW a vassal of some other liege. if you have a CB on a vassal - DOW his top-level liege.

you are right - it does say that - i read it wrong

thanks all for the info on having to declare on their liege
