That is true for synthetics that were created. But this event implies that your society fully understands that these are not robots or AI, these are xenos that just uploaded their minds to machines. There is a difference, I think.
I would go with you on there. For me the difference between materialist and spiritualist is there is only matter and no soul vs only the soul matter (and only the chosen ones have one).
As a neutral on the subject, I don't really see why I wouldn't be able to give these species rights.

Imagine your government built 5 million robots. Then it gave them the right to vote. It would take some pretty exceptional thinking to decide that was okay. I'm 100% okay with AI rights being exclusively the domain of materialist regimes.

well we managed to give blacks and women the right to vote, I'm quite sure we can manage robots.

For organics we have a level of rights that both doesn't allow slavery and doesn't allow voting (residence). Seems fair to allow the same be applied to synths by non-materialist/spiritualists.

Funnily enough I consider that pretty okay. At least with robots you can trust to not be easily swayed to someone's side and work with facts.

Personally, I would say that Xenophiles should also have the ability to give them rights. Because even if they don't believe that robots are sentient, a person that likes, respects and admires other beings, be they sentient or not, would sway on the side of caution and treat anybody that acts as a sentient being as being sentient. Just for the off chance that they are sentient, and that they'd be abusing sentient beings.

The same can happen to humans. Not literally, but the results would be the same. So there's no difference.
Plus if a robot is considered to be sentient, then that means that it's probably really freaking hard to hack one due to complexity.

And human beings are one hell of a buggy kind of being already. Robots would be an improvement over that.

But let's not descend into this. The point still stands, at the very least xenophiles would still consider synths sentient and would be able to give them rights.

Funny enough, egalitarians explicitly do NOT care if the Robots have Voting Rights.
They only care about Movement Rights.

still make no sense to have put an old race into synth bodies just to enslave them later ^^'

Pretty sure there's a significant chunk of the playerbase who would enjoy doing that purely for the sadistic aspect of it.

no, I had an anomaly where you download an ancient race. I offered them synth bodies. And then they ended up slaves... Not really a nice welcome.

Seriously, it does seem to be a weird loophole in the rules.

I think the Limbo event is a tough case, but in general I agree that materialists should care about synth rights, and egalitarians and xenophiles should not.
But they should probably still have the option, I'd say.
