I think there could be a case that AI does not respect FE somehow.
Maybe due to spying mechanic AI has no information about FE at all, and it does recognise FE as it, thinking it is another minor, and there is no code to remember this is FE.
I wouldn't be shocked; in my most recent game I had a protectorate claim FE sectors...twice. First time I wasn't ready (I wasn't expecting to start a FE/AE war until after I finished my Megastructure build campaign, so my fleets were underpowered for the time), the second I was. So now my protectorate owns a bunch of FE sectors/planets.

As for the Khan, he's more a threat to the galaxy (which has very little understanding of this whole "build fleets" thing) rather then to you personally, provided you at least have some Battleships and a good system to defend in. But I generally start clearing out Marauder systems near me around that time just to prevent the headache.

Personally, the Khan (and frankly, the endgame crisis's) should spawn not based on year, but based on galaxy fleet power. You get more powerful early, the Khan wakes up early. Keeps the Khan more balanced relative to the player empire(s).

Most AIs respect FEs like normal opposition: As soon as they think they can beat them they provoke them.
This does count alliances and similar and is mostly a military power comparison. The AI does not consider its own issues getting fleet to the front or that it's (forced) allies might not participate fully.
That's why federation allys and vassals can disrespect FEs after a while.

I've had like 4 games started which all had me start near a raider region, and every time they spawned the Khan (though one of those times was me trying to destroy the Raiders which caused them to awaken), which was at the time too much for me to handle simply due to close proximity.

However even then, the Khan usually can't do much other than be a minor threat without any long term staying power. Just once, I'd love to see Khan to succeed in getting most of the Galaxy under their control without either suicide by Fallen Empire or a Heart Attatck 10 years after their spawn.

Oh, I guess that makes sense. Likely what the AI did in my game. Wasn't expecting that.

Great khans biggest issue is that it does not scale with crisis strength. It would be a different story if u could have a 25x great khan by shoving the crisis strength slider all the way to the right. Instead we get on all difficulties basically an ensign khan.
The argument that u just could push the midgame slider to spawn the khan as early as possible does not count for me in the slightest, as then why not abolishing the crisis strength slider completely as u also can spawn the end game crisis early instead.

Again, I feel a better solution is to tie midgame/endgame crisis's to overall galaxy strength. Solves the issue of the Khan being too weak relative to the galaxy at large.

I have 3000 hours and around 20 games of Stellaris

Quick maths tells me you spend 150 hours per game. Do you mean game as in playthrough? Like, you spend 150 hours playing the same empire in the same galaxy?

Thats impossible, since you can reach midgame within 2-3 hours easily and the game is basically over by 2300 as you will be getting into repeatables and the Crisis should arrive soon. How could you spend more than 10 hours on the same playthrough? Even on a 1000 Star Galaxy with > 20 empires you don't need 10 hours to finish a game. How do you do it?

Yes and no, it depends when they appear. There has been times where they have been a mere nuisance that can easily be wiped out, and other times when they have caught my empire off guard and completely destroyed my empire and all my hardwork.

Captain typically, the GK's large enough to be a serious concern but not overwhelming (assuming not right next door to their whole fleet) though definitely a problem for everyone else.

I would presume by being something like me, rarely above normal speed and lots of pauses to go check the wiki or find insight to a problem. The occasional oops i left it running overnight(paused or not). Maybe alot of abortive starts where you play a few years and then run into some seemingly insurmountable challenge and figure cause you have only been at it 15 mins to just start over.

150 is a really long time, but 15-20 hours is perfectly reasonable to get to 2425. Are you speeding through on Fastest or something?

Obviously you play on fastest at the beginning. I usually do fastest with pause and occasionally switch to fast.

I never played to 2425 since you already reach lategame by 2300 and the Crisis should be invading arounf 2300 or a bit later depending on your settings. I think I played a single game to 2410 once and it was the worst and most boring game I ever played. I was playing overpowered Driven Assimilator back when the game was Machine Empire simulator (50% Assembly speed bonus from Cybrex Warforge). I oneshot the Prethoryn scout fleet so the Crisis never even arrived in my galaxy. It was a huge letdown.

would presume by being something like me, rarely above normal speed and lots of pauses to go check the wiki or find insight to a problem.
Why on normal? That would be way too slow and nothing is going on while you wait for new pops to grow or ships to move. Or maybe you are playing without pause to simulate multiplayer environment?

Yes if I play with my favourite settings (2050 early game), even with default settings The Khan can be a threat.

Once I spawned right between 2 Murderers and it was not fun... Luckily, the 3rd one of the other side of the galaxy decided to become The Flood Khanate so I wasn't reduced to atoms.

I have played about 10-12 games.

I have noticed as I have ramped up the difficulty, he seems to be less of a threat. AI empires find it easier to deal with him due to larger fleet sizes they can pull together. Perhaps the Khan should scale up with difficulty?

I usually lower the mid- and lategame start years. The Khan can then usually be defeated by a few very militaristic empires banded together. But then again, if he is too strong, you can always just subit to him.
He only really throws a wrench into things, if I can't avoid him and wanted to do something with a federation since that is really the only thing submitting costs.

Dude... I am an old fart too. I litterally played my last two games at normal speed. I made them longer by 100 years and slowed research to 1.7. I found it quite enjoyable.

Still, 150 per game hours must have some pauses in. I have spent about 30-40 hours in my current game to get to 2500.

I do like to rename all of my colonies, sectors and stations, which can take a bit of time.
