I once annexed Japan when playing China in a multiplayer game.

That's cool cuz that's basically what happened in history but in ealier patches I did see Japan annex China a couple times... now they take the same exact provinces every time and just stop

interesting, in my game (1.06 not 1.06c...still need to update
 ) Japan is killing China

Mainly because the AI is coded to do that! ;)

Historically, did the Japanese invasion bog down and stop completely by late '41, or did it just slow down? I was just thinking that, given enough time, one side or the other should be able to push the other back from the historical stalemate line. I know that it's all speculation if the Japanese would eventually have worn China out with advanced technology, or if the Chinese manpower and logistics were quite literally unconquerable, so I don't really want to start such a pointless debate. But for gaming purposes....

For example, in my Germany games, if I can manage to bring Japan into an alliance, I start teching up the Japanese in the hopes that they can finally reach Chungking (Usually, they stop at Chengdu, right on the verge of victory). But since the AI seems to be coded to recognize the number of divisions in other provinces before any other factor when planning offensives, they make no move, even if they are fully teched up to Human 1943 Germany standards. What's worse, sometimes China manages to hold on to a few provinces just south of Shanghai, and the Japanese make no move on them either, even though they are completely cut off from the Chinese capitol in the west, even by sea.

Any advice, shy of taking full military control? Or, if I do take military control temporarily, where in the savegame file can I remove it?

Ah, much appreciated, fellow Anglophile. I didn't notice those quotes at first, so it took me longer than it should have to figure it out.

i've seen em throw the Japanese out of the mainland and annex Manchuria a few times, but I was giving them loads of techs and supplies as well. it's worth doing cos they can really tie up the main part to the japanese army leaving the islands ripe for invasion.

There is a missing factor in HOI, and that is the factor to learn. Specifically in regards to the large stack issue. Forts cause the ai to go even more wimpy. It should still probe, or perhaps there should be a third factor and that is known tech of the enemy based on the tech charts available for us look at. Anyways, hopefully HOI 2 addresses that sort of "learning" issue, which should also be applied in tech that the ai develops as it responds to setbacks and victories not unlike a chess match.

I've taken most of the Japanese Home Isles as China...

Very difficult because of the IJN... which you can hardly hope to challenge. As it is I can't get to Hokkaido, or Shikoku but I have Kyushu and Honshu, so whatever.

But yeah, anyway, Japan remained Liberal Conservative, never DoWed me. Kinda scary, for a long time, I had minimal forces (3-4, gradually increasing) divs staring across a border where the Japanese had 16-17, divisions... suddenly... they all shufflled around until only 3 or 4 were left, and DoWed America and such. I sat around for a while, then swept them totally out of mainland Asia, built some transport fleets, snuck across the korean straight, etc.

I think Japan winning is up to the AI and the events firing that let it do its work. If it has to wait for 100% WE....

yea, if I build level 3 forts in a province the AI wil almost never attack it for some reason, even if they have a huge army on the border

A few times I've seen China kick the crap out of Japan for seemingly no reason. Like the time the Japanese didnt commit more than 7 divs to any province in China and most had less than 3 divs.

I dont know where the rest of the divs were, but they were being incredibly stupid. They had no other war ongoing at the time so it was really wierd.

One big mistake the AI Japan still makes is to keep next to no forces at home. Rather disastrous with all that coastline. Sure the IJN may be around. OTOH it may not. As eg. the SU it's too easy to invade mainland Japan while the majority of the japanese forces are bogged down in Asia.

In my last game as China I annexed Japan and invaded axis europe trough my conquest of Iraq and military access trough Turkey.

I have once seen China push away Japan without me intervening in any way.

and thats cause I was the US and helped them out.

This is IMO one of the worst thing that could happen as USA. With a weak Japan half the fun as USA is lost, I have been helping Japan by giving them techs a couple of times tough. :D
