Playing with an idea for Germany and was wondering if anyone's tried it yet. Basically I'm trying to avoid war with the allies as it will eventually turn into a war with America. Instead I want to concentrate on the USSR.

Would annexing Austria (for IC as the Eastern Front is always an epic campaign) but avoiding Czechoslovakia prevent the allies from retaliating when I invade Poland? (not using the Danzig Event).

I would prefer to use the Treaty of Munich to get some more IC but that may be to much. Is there countries like Italy and Hungary I should take into consideration?

Maybe you could try coaxing or couping Poland into your camp instead?

There is also a very rare chance of getting the Czechoslovakian's into the Axis itself via event, I think its the Munich Treaty.

Funny you said this because i want to do the exact opposite x)
Avoid war with the soviets

Tried this, and went as far as invading America. But there's always the chance the USSR will randomly attack you. Not good when most of your forces are in North America.

Maybe you could try coaxing or couping Poland into your camp instead?
This could be possible, can you ally Poland through influence or is a Coup necessary?

This strategy depends on large parts on the settings of your game. Do you play with "Democracies can declare war"? If yes, then the following will most surely happen: By 1940/41 Japan will carry out Pearl Harbour. The US will join the Allies. France will declare war on you (Germany). 4 weeks later the skies will darken due to USAAF-bombers over Germany. :) Ah yes, and the US are going to invade everywhere in the world, except Japan of course. ^^
Another thing you might consider is that most if not all event/decision chains are based on the assumption that you a) are allied with Italy and b) Poland has fallen.

In my current game I got Austria, Sudetenland (Treaty of Munich) and the end of Czechslovakia and they still did the above thingie. But on the other hand, the USSR didn't attack. I choose the limited Molotov-Ribbentrop-Pact and the Soviets just annexed only 2 out of the 3 Baltic States. By 1950 I started Barbarossa which took about 4 weeks and it was all over. (~150 German Divs plus like 100 from my European allies/puppets while the USSR had about 250-270...)

Just don't pressure POL for Danzig and France has to wait until your belligerence is high enough to declare war. If you can ally Poland, it's rather easy to set up your fronts, but you can also just attack from East Prussia. You'll need a lot of convoys, and you'll have to declare on Lithuania too if you don't activate the Molotov-Ribentropp pact.

That is interesting, always had the impression that the USSR built nothing but infantry and that you should attack them early or get destroyed later.

Will try this and spend the 1940's conquering America. ;)

This will also give me time to build nuclear weapons as a deterrent if things go wrong.

i haven't played DH much so far, but is there a way for germany to get nat. china as an ally instead of japan? and would that change anything in case of pearl harbor? is there a possibility for the US to go with 'japan first' strategy?

I think Japan will not go after the UK if Germany beat the UK before. Or at least the devs planned to do that.

Check out the Germany AAR in my signature. In that AArR, I beat the allies (peace) before concentrating on USA and USSR.

Tried the historical route again and found that if you get a Bitter Peace with the USSR (took Moscow by late 1941) and the UK is conquered, there's an event where the US and remaining Allies make peace with you.

It's only temporary though, after the Non-Aggression with the US expires, they get an event called "Avenge our fathers" and attack you. Better develop your nuclear program. ;)
