I did it, not a big deal tho.
I started as Duke of Rostov in 1066, made a Russian Empire, merged it with ERE, and by 1400, restored the Roman Empire. Last 50 years were focused on WC. I achieved it in 1449.

But it's not very hard actually, but i guess it might depend on the power of HRE and muslims to take back the lands you need to trigger the decision.

DAT Ilkhanate! :eek:

I had a very similar empire with the 1.07 patch, but went a bit further in the near east (and was about 1400).
But with the new patch, it should be much more difficult, right?

If I remember it right, you don't get the imperial blablabla roman causus belli until you reform the empire and it does not give you all the lands, it makes vassals when possible, so not anymore just putting a bunch of orthodox greeks to rule all places. Ain't it?

They completely broke the Imperial Reconquest CB in the latest patch; it's behaviour is very inconsistent and at times it does nothing except usurp a duchy title (I've seen people reporting it usurps the title from their own vassals after a foreign war >.<). They should be fixing this for the latest patch.

At any rate, the Imperial Reconquest CB is inferior to simply holy warring your way through heathen territory. You only really need to worry about finding claimants for the Italian peninsula/forging a claim on Latium, because once you've restored the Pentarchy, Catholicism becomes a becomes a heresy and you are free to holy war them as well (along with getting free revocations on any Catholics still in your realm with enough CA).

DAT Ilkhanate! :eek:
They started in Hungary, believe or not. Their initial spawn got screwed and their hordes were stuck with no land, then they declared war on Hungary who were holding land in Russia. Instead of going for the border they dived into Hungary itself and so the mongols and hungarians basically switched places.

So, gathering from above and elsewhere, my understanding is you need to:
1. Be Byz Emperor
2. Be Orthodox
3. Rule over Rome? and / or all of Latium? and / or all of Italy?
which lets you
4. Mend the Schism, which Catholics can't do?
Which lets you
4.5 treat Catholics as heretics
5. Reform Rome
which lets you
6. Imperial Conquest CB - nawt sew grate aktuallee
7. Imperial Admin - revoke duchy titles for free so long as there's no king between you and the duke

So no possibility to crusade with a Catholic reformed Rome?

a) You do not need to mend the schism to become the Roman Empire.

b) There is nothing stopping you from becoming Catholic after becoming the Roman Empire.

-therefore-

c) It is theoretically possible to undergo a Crusade as the Roman Empire.

(and don't listen to all the haters about the Imperial Conquest CB, it rocks. They are usually comparing it to how it worked pre-1.08, when you didn't need to have reformed the empire to use it. No matter how you shake it, the IC CB beats the hell out of waiting for claims)

OK, dug thru the Dev Diaries looking for help
Ambitious emperors will no doubt try to reclaim some of Rome's former glory by restoring the Empire's lost territory. If they or their imperial vassals hold certain provinces, they will have the opportunity to restore the Roman Empire. This decision essentially signifies that the West has no choice but to accept the Byzantines as the true heirs of Rome's legacy. You will get a new title (complete with a new flag, of course), and the rulers of a restored Rome always get the ”Augustus” trait, which gives a slight boost to vassal relations. If you wish it, there is a decision to move your capital to Rome, though the city scarcely compares to Constantinople in this era so you will likely have to invest a lot of gold and time to rebuild it.

Another major decision, of course, is to mend the Great Schism between the Catholic and Orthodox churches. You will need to reunite the Pentarchy (Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria and Rome) under Byzantine and Orthodox rule and accumulate a great deal of piety. When this decision is taken, Catholicism will become a heresy and Catholic rulers across Europe will have to decide whether to convert or not. A few will refuse, and Europe will likely be plagued by religious unrest for some time, but the first step has now been taken to unite Christendom under a single church.

So reforming Rome give the IC CB and the IA revocation ability, and to do it you need to be Byz Emp and rule over ... what? Starting Byz and Italian peninsula? De jure Byz including K_Sicily and Latium? Just Rome and Constantinople?

Mending the schism makes Catholics heretics, so holy war CB and heretic title revocation (no equivalent for a Catholic Byz to make Orthodox heretic?). To do it you need to be Byz Emp, put Pentarchs in the 5 Pentarchies, and burn a ton of piety. Anything else?

It seems that the 2 decisions have similar effects, a title revoking power and an additional CB. IA lets you revoke any duchy title, not just heretics', so that's better right? How does IC compare to HW CB? IC would seem to be usable on anyone, but if it just gives you the duchy level title there's a good case for HW instead. Can you IC a kingdom?

Currently Catholic holder of K_Italy and K_Sicily, scheming for first son to become HRE, while 4th son's 1st son is next in line for Byz through a lucky marriage for me and an unlucky one for Byz. Trying to understand the mechanics and choose the family path.

There are a series of duchies you need to COMPLETELY control (including all the minor holdings) in order to reform Rome. Pulled directly from decisions, they are...

completely_controls = d_latium
completely_controls = d_venice
completely_controls = d_ferrara
completely_controls = d_sicily
completely_controls = d_genoa
completely_controls = d_capua

completely_controls = d_jerusalem

EDIT: Also, you don't have to burn piety to mend the schism, but it does require 2000 piety already stockpiled. Holy wars against Muslims/Pagans are a great way to get this.

IC should give you the entire Duchy, and all the holdings in it. Sometimes (especially when the target is in revolt against the liege) it just gives the duchy title. I believe I've also had it take the Duchy title from my Vassal once in that case as well. But most of the time it's WAD.

So no possibility to crusade with a Catholic reformed Rome?

Your information is mistaken, or out-of-date. In 1.08, the requirements are: you must be the Byzantine Emperor, Christian, at least 16, not imprisoned, and not incapable. You must completely control all the duchies in a list. Playing as the Byzantine Emperor, you can go to the Intrigue screen and mouseover the requirements to see them. You don’t have to have mended the schism first, but since you’re playing as the Byzantine Empire and the territories you need to control include Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem, you’ll always have the opportunity on the way.

Ther is no requirement that you be Orthodox to form Rome, only that you be Christian. There is at present no decision to restore the Pentarchy as any other faith but Orthodox. You could convert to Catholicism (or, for that matter, you could play as an Armenian Monophysite or any other kind of Christian) before or after you form Rome. The devs really don’t seem to have considered the possibility, though; for example, if you appoint an Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, a Miaphysite Patriarch of Alexandria or a Monothelite Patriarch of Antioch, they’ll immediately hand over the title to the head of their religion, who will become your vassal, but this does not happen for a Catholic bishop of Rome.

Therefore, you can form the Roman Empire as a Catholic, without cheating, but only by appointing a Catholic bishop of Rome who is not the Pope. In a test game, giving the See of Rome to the Pope made him independent, which broke my complete control of the duchy of Latium. I could appoint a different Catholic bishop of Rome, and make him antipope, but forcing the Pope to abdicate made my antipope independent again. Perhaps the idea is that the Medieval popes would not have approved of giving up their secular power and becoming a mere vassal of the emperor in Constantinople, even if he claimed to convert while making war on them. But, surely that would not apply to a pope you appointed yourself? So, of the options available without cheating, the antipope option is the most historically plausible. You could also just wait until you’ve become Augustus to eliminate the Pope, and let the bishopric of Roma go then.

The flavor text also assumes that a Byzantine emperor who captures Rome is Orthodox.

Hmm. So a Catholic who wants to reform Rome needs for the Pope to be evicted from Rome (in which case you'd have to reform Rome quickly before the Pope asked for Rome back, or have an antipope in Rome to buy you time), or to vassalize the Pope by inviting a kingdom level claimant, mkaing him a bishop, pressing his kingdom claim, making the new King-Bishop vassal an antipope, then pressing his claim on the Papacy/Rome to produce a vassal Pope in Rome.

So to compare Catholic Reformed Empire to Orthodox Mended Schism
-IA lets you revoke any duchy. Heretic revoke would let you revoke Catholic kingdoms as well as duchies. Advantage depends on number of non-vassal kings who stay Catholic. Most likely IA will be more useful.
-IC when it works right is the same as HW but can target anyone. Advantage IC.
-Catholic Empire can still get Crusades and Holy Orders. Advantage Catholic

So it seems the family dream should be to get oldest made HRE, do all we can to help cadet branch hold ERE, cousin marry and unite the branches ASAP, and look for opportunities to create a vassal Pope and/or evict the Pope from Rome, in hopes of eventually leading a restored Catholic Roman Empire on Crusade.
