I did some tests as Austria, so I know some approximate numbers:

Troop Type Plains Forests Mountains
Infantry__ 16 ___ 20 ____ 25 _____ (days)
Cavalry___ 11 ___ 15 ____ 20 _____ (days)
Artillery___ 20 ___ ? _____ ? ______ (days)

Crossing a river adds 3-5 days.

But the movement rate seems to vary by province. Movement in Africa is especially slow.

Is there a terrain factor in the CSV files or does the movement speed depend on the distance between the provinces? (or both  !)

When your troups move slower than you expect, it is easy to mistakenly end up with two big armies in one province at the end of a month. (and take some very bad attrition)

Has anyone figured out the details of movement yet?

I'm surprised this isn't in a FAQ somewhere. Perhaps you can author such a post, and have BiB transport it for you. :) Keep up the good work.

Thanks.

Here is what I got from a thread awhile ago.

Army movement speed: Cal=3 Inf=2 Art=1.5

Naval movement speed:
Tech Lv0: War=6 Galley=4 Trans=6
Tech Lv17: War=10 Galley=4 Trans=10
Tech Lv31: War=12 Galley=4 Trans=12
Tech Lv49: War=14 Galley=4 Trans=12

Don't know if this helps what you are trying to do.
Good luck and let us know.

I think there was something in EU1 about movement across borders taking a longer time. I haven't noticed if that is still so...

Also, it takes twice as long to board ships from a non-port province than from a province with a port.

Something changed from EU1... armies now move a bit faster (1-2 days) in February, so movement which would be completed by the end of the month still is.

I'm sure artillery takes 30 days to move into mountains (start them on the 1st, they arrive on the following 1st). And I assume it's 25 days for forests based on the rest of your numbers... that sounds right.

I think swamps have the same movement rates as mountains, and desert is the same as plains. Not absolutely sure on those. But I know infantry cannot move from Hitherpommern to Vorpommern in less than one month, and there's a river between them, so if rivers add 5 days then swamps are 25 days.

I posted this in another thread awhile ago, but here it is again:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Warships are only faster than transports when you get to the final shiptype (tri-deckers). At every other tech level, they're equal.

After a dozen or so arguments about this, I finally tracked down my EU manual, which lists the speeds (p.51).

Code:
Name Warships Galleys Transports
 ==================================================

Carrack 6 4 6
Galleon 10 4 10
Lateen Sail 10 4 10
Battery Deck 10 4 10
Vasseaux 12 4 12
Three-Decker 14 4 12

This is good info, I'm not sure why they left it out of the EU2 manual (even if there have been tweaks).

Another helpful table is also on page 51. Land movement.

Code:
Type Montly move points
=============================
Infantry 2
Cavalry 3
Artillery 1.5

Terrain costs:

Type Cost
====================
Open 1
Woods 1.25
Mts. 1.75
Desert 1.25
Swamp 1.5
Rivers 1
Country Border 0.5

Rivers & country borders stack, adding to terrain movement costs.

All is copyrighted Paradox material, of course.

And rivers. Its the same in EU 2.

While rivers make sense to prolong the movement, I can't really see the justification that borders would... although customs can be hell if you've bought too much wine.:D

I always assumed that the rationale has to do with the fact that there would likely be fewer roads, bridges, viaducts, etc. running accross national borders.

Hey it takes a lot of time to stamp all those passports.

Why do movement rates matter? Isn't it too much of a micromanagement issue, or is this interest just out of curiosity? :)

One word: tactics

eg. timed re-enforcements
eg. logistics for preparing for war.
eg. attrition reduction, by deciding on what day to give your move orders.

But it should do these things, after all it has access to the exact information (ie. how long it will take to move Army "A" from Provence "1" to Provence "2").

One of the times the AI impressed me was when it turned the tide of battle with the timely arrival of re-enforcments. Wow I hated lossing the Battle but was thankful for the tactic, which I have used with great success. Unfortunately, this was early in my experiance with the game and from further experiance I think this was just an accident on the AI's part. :)
