Ah, so that's how it works mechanically....only visible to the player, until revealed by a secret. That explains it and makes sense now.

The problem with Harald being homosexual makes it harder to have children, doesn't it? Homosexual characters have lower fertility since they're less likely to sleep with their spouse. That's why it's anachronistic, because he had shitloads of children according to the sagas, but a gay Harald would make it difficult to have even a few kids.

In CK3 sexuality is only used for attraction opinion and which characters to pursue as lovers. The fertility malus was not carried over from CK2

Pre-1.3, I restarted the game as Haraldr more than 20 times, and never once was he gay.

Post 1.3, I haven't yet seen him be hetero in any New Game I'm rolled.

NGL, Harald is my go-to norse pick, and I would FREQUENTLY use seduction to constantly bring in new concubines for good inheritable traits, or even just useful councilors. Kinda harder to do that as gay.

I googled about the term ergi and found out that term has been preserved practically unchanged in Estonian and Finnish. Kind of paradoxical that Estonian has so many words that are unchanged from proto-Germanic and Old Norse.

A really good source for Old Norse stuff - language in particular, but religious and cultural information too - is a cowboy on Youtube by the name of Jackson Crawford. Here's a short video Dr Crawford did on grievous insults, which includes info on argr/ergi ("homosexual"), as well as a few other words that could get you a legally-justified axe to the face:

That explains why I already have 3 children in four years then, while playing homosexual Harald. (note: I only even looked at the sexuality because I'd seen this thread, and I think this is the first time I got a homosexual character upon starting a new game at all, but I haven't done any testing - though I'm of half a mind to start 20 games of Harald and see how often he's assigned homosexual so I can post the results in this thread)

a lot of stuff is decided from checksum to checksum rather than per machine running the game. harald has a randomised sexuality which, for this checksum, just happened to be gay. this is why everyone who is running an unmodded game is getting the same thing

pdx has made this oversight before and had to patch in a correction so that certain characters can only ever be hetero or bi, i think this is just a case of that

Ynglings are a lasting dynasty as opposed to Hvitserks for example. Yngling lasted until 1387, starting them off as gay results in less offspring which may see them get axed earlier than needed. Meanwhile Karlings are eternal.

I'm saying this because Harald is a Norse Asatruist, and that religion / culture does condemn homosexuality.

Speaking about the game at large, most religions either shun or criminalize homosexuality, which means a public relations hit in most cases. The post you were replying to states that public relations hits should occur in "99.9% of cases", which is clearly hyperbole - but it should occur (and does occur) in the majority of cases, perhaps more than 95%.

So... I guess I was saying that because
a) it's true, and
b) given that the post you were replying to is mostly correct, I don't why you were saying that.

You'd worded your reply as if you were trying to demonstrate why the post was incorrect and why the proposed public relations hit should not be implemented, when in fact that is not the case. Maybe that was not your intention?

I have no idea why this was done, but as far as saga and the skaldic poems about Harald tell he certainly was hetero, if not bi. Hrafnsmál mentions 10 wifes and seems unlikely a man who at least fathered 9 sons in Hákonarmál and later sagas says about 11-23 children to be gay.

Gay men can marry and have children. This is what they did historically (and some do still to this day). Being gay doesn't make it so you can't impregnated a women. Also there is the whole can of worms of closeted gay men over compensating.

As being married and having kids is what is expected of pretty much everyone in the middle ages (gay or straight) I don't think this is a good bar for determining the sexuality for inclusion in the game files (better to leave it as random). Now if the sagas talk about female lovers, then I'd say that he should be defined as straight (or bi).

Not that it's too much of an issue, but he's one of the prominent characters with no records of him not being hetero.
