General Patton had a fit when he was told to stop his drive east and not to capture Berlin. I also read that many of the German troops - including Generals - wanted to declare peace with the English and US troops so they could fight the Soviets.
This is a subject that greatly fascinates me, although I confess I know far too little of the politics at the end of the war. Anyway, continuing east to oust the Soviets seems like the logical thing in hindsight, especially considering the ongoing Manhattan Project. The allies were geared for war, had the troops in place, innumerable German veterans to recruit and the A-bomb in the pipeline. Weighing in the incredible losses suffered by the Soviets there is literally no way that an invasion of the CCCP could have failed.
