Multiple times a week, Xaver set in his study counting coins. It helped him relax after a tiresome day in the city hall where he was mostly concerned with Saxe-Lauenburg. The rival was threatening to embargo the Hanseatic League. A salt shortage was the last thing Xaver and his family would need but at least the shipments from Lüneburg still arrived on time. In order to plan an attack on Saxe-Lauenburg, the city of Lübeck would need someone capable to lead them. For approximately one year, his friend Albrecht Holzmann had been serving as captain of the city guard. However, the generalship was still vacant and in order to not raise suspicion the position was written-out.

The City of Lübeck
is to hire a new general for its army. All applicants must have previous military experience and superb tactical understanding.
Signed Xaver von Warendorf

So much for counting coins. The work always got to Xaver, even when he tried to relax. He could not sleep well for as long as Lübeck's key business as threatened by an outsider. Saxe-Lauenburg was most likely aware of the armament that was taking place not far from their home. Who would strike first?

((If it's not clear, from my IC, Lübeck is hiring a general. Send your applications to the Statthalter.))

Name: Hermann Baasch.

Birth-Date: 21th June 1419

Religion: Catholic

Biography: Klaus Baasch, Hermann's Father, was a reasonably successful trader in his youth but was afflicted greatly by sloth. He slowly liquidated the family's whole fleet and assets to fund a life style of leisure and gambling. Debt ridden and running out of assets he found business with a ship bondsman and placed his money into his company. He found gambling with the fate of ships was a much better game for him as Bondsmen insure traders in the event of a disaster and take a cut from the profits of every ship journey they cover.

Settling down and happy with his new work he married a hardy woman "for the purposes of keeping me in line" and Hermann was born in June 1413. Hermann's childhood was that of any mercantile child. He had a good education and learnt the classics, history, Latin and mathematics. His studies have given him great ambition with his fathers company and making it richer in the future. Hermann wishes to expand its operations greatly and had his chance as his father grew ill and his own influence in the running of his establishment grew. His father had slowly expanded influence over the other shareholders and now Hermann aggressively forced them into line under him or found other ways to remove them from the Bond house.

His first expansion was to start to buy up currency from other lands and exchanging it into the local currency for traders. He then used these holdings to sell the currency back to the traders if they needed a quantity of currency for their businesses aboard, taking a nice percentage from the fair exchange. In November 11 AD 1444 Hermann is twenty five, his father has just died, he is unmarried and extremely ambitious.

((The point of this char is the sort of financial services d-bag. Currently he trades in Bonds, which are sort of medieval insurance on ships and currency trading but as his company grows more will become available. If you wish for him to invest for you please do write to me and if the traders wish his services the same! Finally He will NOT lend money. Usery is a sin!!!)

19431150.jpg

Biography: A giant in the Norwegian herring industry, Ivar's family had made wealth by selling their fish across the North sea and Scandinavian Peninsula. As the third son in line for inheritance, he had decided to take a small purse of ducats and seek fortune for himself. He visited the Dutch city of Amsterdam, where he learned of the Buis, a type of ship that allowed for a longer perservation of Herring. He took this knowledge with him to Lübeck, where along with his wife, Siegrid Langemeyer. he estabished a trading company, the Sild Selskapet. His company saw succes, as with the Buis, more Herring could be caught and stored on a single trip. This made him fairly wealthy.

To expand his buisiness across the Baltic sea is his goal, as he wants to create a rich trading dynasty. His oldest son, Steffen, is to succeed him when he passes away. His second and third sons, Havard and Ludvig, are both captains on two of his merchant ships. He is still trying to find a good match for his 16 year old daughter, Julia. Currently, Ivar is working to establish connections in Stockholm and Visby, two rich hubs for Herring trade.

The Black Knight of Varna: The Prelude (Now with 95% More Black!))

It all seemed so long ago… It was the battle that would make him infamous throughout the courts of Europe, maybe even the world in the future. Or maybe not. Likely not to be honest. But it was good to be optimistic, kept your confidence up, if you didn’t believe in yourself, how could one win? He began to see in his head the fields and the soldiers and the people he knew at Varna. And just at a moment, he was there.

He looked from upon his horse to a sight of Saracens, Turks marching forward towards the Crusading force of Magyars, Poles, Wallachians, and some other ethnicities, the name of which he could care less about. He could see the shore of the Lake from his steed, a black thing, with the sun visible from the reflection of the lake. He turned over to his left, seeing her, one of his banners, in shining silver armor. “Seems like a good fight.” He had a smile under his helmet and she knew it was there, she knew him well.

“Aye.” She turned to him, “don’t die alright?”

He let out a small chuckle, “Of course.” He turned back to the field, having little time for idle conversation in the midst of preparations. He, and the rest of La Forza, waited along with the rest of the army until they attacked. The wait didn’t last too long however, as he glanced at the Ottoman cavalry attacked the right flank. Quickly, he barked orders to his men, a force 2,000 strong, with the rest back at the camp, to begin firing at the now-exposed force. Shots hounded them as the force were repulsed from their positions. The sounds of bombards, possibly theirs, boomed, firing at the heathenous force. The firepower of their force would win the day it seemed.

The force of Croats got their revengeance against the Anatolian menace. Hacking and slashing their way across the field, it seemed to be a major victory for his force, the entire Ottoman right flank defeated, allowing them to flank Murad’s army. But only if the world were more perfect. While they pursued the enemy in an unorderly and undisciplined manner, the remaining cavalry led them into an ambush. Cavalry emerged and easily broke the Croats, who fled, following their commander into a retreat to Galata, a small fortress of theirs on the coast. Such cowards, he thought to himself, such cowards.

But his time of idle thought was short-lived, as the force of heathens attacked them as well, climbing over their defenses to strike at them. He moved himself towards to front of his company, hoping he inspire some sort of fighting spirit or what not. The SIpahi crashed into his banners, and Sebastian harassed the enemy with his sword, along with others in La Forza. As the attacked continued, his men slowly driving them back, one step at a time, until they collapsed falling backing in their defenses. While they fled, he noticed some of his men running towards them, he yelled at the top of his lungs to have them return to positions, which they did. His men would not be put into another trap.

The battle stalled for a few minutes, both sides calculating their decisions to win this engagement. He himself was thinking about the state of his men, they have suffered moderate losses at the hands of the Ottoman forces, and they held a good defensive position. It seemed like it was going well to him at least. The tense tranquility of the battle ended as the same Syphilis came charging back at them again, with more ferocity than than ever. The men tried to hold them back, but they retreated one step at a time. Sebastian himself was fighting in the frontlines, hacking and slashing his sword at the enemy. He stuck it true into the body of someone. He tried to get it out, but it was stuck in his body. Knowing he had not to lose any time, he quickly grabbed his opponent's sword, which had a strange pattern on it. It must have been some sort of Eastern wizardry. With that sword, he continued his attack on the heathens, striking his way into the heart of the enemy armor, and trying to kill as much as possible, or at the least injure them. The hot, burning sun shot its rays on his back, only making both of the forces in the fight more tired than they were from the Bulgarian heat. He began to grow weary as he grew tired of the constant attacks and duels of himself and some soldier from somewhere to the East. He began to slow down is furious strikes and fought more sloppily, letting his guard down many a time and getting stuck somewhere, as he resigned himself to his fate.

He was about to fall down out of pure exhaustion when he heard some voice. WHich he recognized as the White Knight’s. He heard the trampling of hoofs which accompanied his voice. They had sent reinforcements. He began to have a sense of determination for life, he had a chance. He fought against them with a renewed vigour, and with the help of Hunyadi, he and his men, and some of the other soldiers, pushed them back, his confidence in himself growing with each soldier dead on the field. He almost thought the battle would be over now, but he would be met with something else. A complete disaster. The death of a King.

He stopped from a moment to catch his breath at the end of the slog, he stopped and stared at the dead of both sides. So young to die. A messenger came to him, a Hungarian, at least that's what he had from his accent, he turned to look at him, a burly man, with a long beard and a fine mustache. “My lord, the King is dead in the Ottoman camps, sir. He died while charging at the Ottomans.” The man promty left, leaving Sebastian and his questions behind. Why did he charge? What happened? He overheard Hunyadi trying to rally his men to salvage the King’s body. While men simply ignored him and fled, he took it as an orders and rushed off to try and do as he had asked.

And thus the Black Knight rode. He rode alone on the field, swiftly. Others saw his valour and joined him to die in service to their king, and some, their contact. They rode through the fields and mounds of dead. And more joined. And more as they saw him. They had a ragtag team of cavalry when they struck the heart of the Turk. They fought fiercely through the camp, and lost many of their lives. Sebastian fought through the entire camp, with some of his men, a group of about five. They knew they couldn’t do this and fled north from the Turk. Fleeing all the way to Belgrade when they, luckily, saw their company again.

Dear Diary,

After being at sea for six, long, grueling days, I was picked up by a merchant ship, they fed me and clothed me, and made sure I was still alive.
Without them, I would be dead.
They said they will drop me off at their destination, Lubeck, which is where i have decided to stay for a while. I do not want to see the Kaiser and witness his disappointment in me. I ended the same way my father did, disappointing he Kaiser and losing a very expensive ship. I am not sure of any punishment, as father died before any could be given. I will remain dead to the country, it i better this way
I hope Lubeck will treat me well. It must.

November, 144
Dear Diary,

The ship has finally docked, and after two months at sea, me and the crew feel like family. These merchants brought me from the ground up, as well as giving me a little bit of money to go on my way and make myself here.
I refuse to give up, I will make a name for myself someway, now that I am in Lubeck, I’m sure there are jobs that need to be done. I will just have to find some to do.
Perhaps sending a letter to the Statthalter? I think I’ll do that soon.
For now, I’m going to book a room in a local tavern and spend the day there.

The Black Knight of Varna: Part I - Xaver and Frineds
A Joint-IC between delpiero and Duke Dan

“Stefano! Is that it?” he wondered if that was the city. He heard rumors of their preparations against the Saxe-something, the name was something he didn’t really care about. But the coin, he heard the Hanseatic were quite rich.

“No, that is just some peasant village.” Stefano smirked, “Hell no! What village has walls?”

Sebastian let out a hardy laugh, “Alright, send word to Othello, Napier and Catarina to make encampments there.” He pointed at a nice flat area on the side of the Elbe. “I shall be going into the city. I heard of a possible contract there.” He let the Italian go and do as he ordered, and he, along with some 4 fellow horsemen, rode along the countryside until they made it in the walls.

“Halt! Why do you enter?”

Sebastian reached to grab a small purse of coin, “You could have this if you let me in.” The guard bide him welcome, and thanks for the money, as he strode into the bustling trade port. He glanced to his side a small paper:

The Statthalter's Letter said:
The City of Lübeck

is to hire a new general for its army. All applicants must have previous military experience and superb tactical understanding.

Signed Xaver von Warendorf

He wondered where this man was, if he still needed it, well, it would be some good coin if got it. He had no idea where to go, so he just walked randomly, staring at the fish merchants selling their catch, the spice merchants selling their spice. Somehow, he made it to Town Hall (which he only knew because he heard some merchant say it.) almost by luck. He saw a man walking out the door, the one that led into the building. “Hey! Are you this man!” He rode up to him, still in the shining black armor he wore at Varna, and pointed at the name in the letter.

City Guard: “Excuse you but are you drunk? Everybody knows that I’m not a Patrician. Now move along.”

Sebastian simply let out a laugh, “If I were drunk, I would probably be sleeping with your wife! But I digress, would you know where this man, or woman, is? I’m sorry, but I’m not all that good with names.”

City Guard: “The Statthalter is working. If you wish to see him then state your business and make an appointment.” He was waving over to another guard and shortly after more guards arrived at the doorway.

One of Sebastian’s company told the guard, “Simply, we are here to offer our services to the city. We are not from here, so please forgive my commander. Where shall we make said appointment?”

The city guard looked skeptical. “Sells-swords.. Alright. Your commander can wait inside for the Statthalter. The others must stay away from the building. And show him more respect.” The guard unlocked the entrance and walked inside. “Come, follow me.”

“You four!” He looked in the direction of the men who accompanied him here. “Send word to the camp of my meeting. This is an order. Go!” He watched as the men rode away from his sights. He dismounted his horse, seeing most of the women in the vicinity swoon at his sight. He walked towards the guard, intending to follow him.

Sebastian had to wait about two hours before he the Statthalter received him. One of the guards escorted him to Xaver’s office.

Xaver: “Step in. What is your name and what business do you bring to Lübeck?”

Sebastian stepped in, ‘I am Sebastian Hamilton, and I am the Commander of La Forza Del Ravenna, a mercenary force 7,000 strong, although we have suffered quite a bit of losses at Varna.”

Xaver was surprised that a mercenary captain sat before him. “Mercenaries? We are not at war and do not intend to hire sellswords any time soon.”

Sebastian looked at him with a skeptical look,”Really? Then why do I have I’ve heard of rumors of a build-up against Saxe-Loronzobourg or some other nations? I am sure you are of need for people like me. Whether it is for defense or other things.”

Xaver: “The size of Lübeck’s city guard has indeed been expanded ever since I was elected. Tet me reiterate: The city is not interested in hiring sellswords as this would deeply hurt our financial situation. What I can offer your best men is to be trained here in Lübeck but we can take no more than 50 or 60.”

“I am afraid I am in no need of training sir. But hiring us would make victory over the Saxe-Laurenburg more likely. It is in the interest of the city to hire me, I could even do your job for you for needed.”

Xaver: “I do not know why you keep talking about war. Lübeck is at peace and has no need for an entire mercenary army of your size. If your best men wish to join the city guard then we can discuss terms but I won’t be hiring your 7.000 men strong company.”

“Then I guess my business must go to others then.”

Xaver: “Very well. Do you need someone to show you out or do you remember the way? I wish you good fortune, Mr. Hamilton.” Xaver had hoped that some of the men would have joined the army but he understood that the captain could not give up his company.

Sebastian took his leave, and the same guard escorted him back out. Maybe his force could be used by another man, he did hear about some rich Gustav from a tavern. Maybe he could employ him.

Cadorna chuckled as he read the letter.
He turned to one of his men, "The Lubecker's want a new general. I think I've got maybe, one or two mor wars in me, what'dya think?"
"You'll probably croak on th' way over, captain."
"You better hope not, I'll have you personally escort my corpse back to Genoa. Anyways, fetch me a pen and some paper."
He wrote to letters, one, to the Stathalter of Lubeck,
Dear Stathalter Xaver von Warendorf,
I have received your message and as luck would have it, am heading to Lubeck for personal reasons. I've send for a regiment of my finest footman, they should arrive maybe a month after myself.
Giovanni Cadorna
The other, send for a regiment, exactly 1000 men strong, to make it's way to Lubeck.

Captains of La Forza del Ravenna

La Forza was a mercenary force founded in Ravenna (hence the name).

7b30d7b8188b36ed5cd451804cdac7fc.jpg

The son of Muzzio Sforza, the Italian condottieri, was born in the year of 1417. He spent most of his childhood in Naples, the city of his mother. He joined his father in the business of the mercenary when he joined the same company as Sebastian. Quickly, they became the best of friends and he defended him when accusations from evil forces in the company expelled him. Which gained him in absolutely nothing except his dismissal from the company. He joined his friend in his company when he first founded it in Ravenna. They are very close friends, which had led to some rumors about them (along with pretty much every other captain.) being secretly lovers. Of course, they have denied such rumors are false, although some still slander them for it.

A fiery, red-headed woman from Montferrat, born in 1419. The daughter of a milkmaid and some [insert generic peasant job here]. Her childhood was one of work, helping her father in his duties. However, secretly, she obsessed about the heroes of the ancient world, and trained herself secretly with her friend. She quickly proved herself a natural at the art of combat. However, one day, she killed her friend in a sparring accident. Her father convinced the rest of the useless peasants that it was simply an accident. However, his father still punished her, and beat her. She ran away from home and found a job as a mercenary, disguising herself as a man. She distinguished herself as a fierce fighter and loyal commander, yet when her womanhood was figured out, she was cast out. Sebastian and Catarina met when they joined the same caravan, they quickly bonded (some say on more sexual terms) and when the caravan reached Ravenna, they decided to join up.

Born to a minor English noblemen, known in records as ‘Lord Napier of Durham, he was a squire to some Earl, who taught him to fight. Why he became a mercenary is unknown, but what is known is that he is an expert in tactics and a useful compatriot of Sebastian.

Arthur was born of a Scottish father, of whom only is known that he was a Lennox, and a Norwegian noblewomen while vacationing in Edinburgh. He was adopted by a merchant, who took him only his adventures in the northern Atlantic. As he grew up, their ship would frequently be attacked by pirates. The crew’s defense and subsequent victories led him to train (when he wasn't doing things on the boat). His training lead him to become a competent soldiers. He joined the Scottish military at the age of 16, losing in a battle one year later, He was thought dead and left behind by hi s army. Looking for a job, he sold his sword to the closest mercenary group, which would be Sebastian’s former group. He joined his friend in the company 2 years later after its foundation, rising through the ranks.

Born in Baghdad to a spice merchant, Othello grew up in luxury, his father being a rich man in the standards of the East. The wealth of his father afforded him an education in the study of philosophy, mathematics, and science. While Othello excelled at his education, known a sa wise young boy, it was warfare where he wanted to be. After weeks of begging his father for a tutor, he finally afforded him one. As in everything he did, he worked diligently and proved himself a good fighter. However, not all was well for him, his father went into debt after his whore-mongering, and bad investments. His debt-collectors took young Othello as a slave to free him off his debts. The collected moved to Greece, and it was there where he escaped from his slavery into freedom. Although shunned for his religion and ethnicity, he traveled his way through Europe, self-training himself in war in an effort to be worth something to the Europeans. He found his niche fighting for coin, furiously dual-wielding double scimitars in a frenzy against the enemy. He was convinced to join Sebastian’s company though very long talks (some say the talks were seduction by Sebastian) between him and Sebastian.

Heinrich laid back on his chair in his small, musty tavern room and sighed. The room was adequate, although not suited for a man of his title, it would have to do until he could afford something else.
His life, and everything leading up to it. Now, that was a story. He never would've imagined that his life would end up how it has, but, he was at peace with what has happened. For now, however, he had to make amends for leaving the Kaisers side, and he had to make a name for himself.
He took out a piece of parchment from a compartment in his desk, as well as a writing utensil, and addressed a letter to the Statthalter, looking for work.
Dearest Statthalter,
My name is Captain Heinrich Lustenburg, I was the Captain of the Falken, the Kaisers war vessel, you may have heard that it sank, or was overrun by pirates, and the entire crew was deemed dead. This untrue, however, for I still live.
I am ashamed in myself, for I haven't spoken to the Kaiser, and I would like it to remain that way. I want to start a new life, here in Lubeck, preferably, and to do this, I was curious to as if you had any work available as a captain of one of your mercantile vessels, or, admiral of your fleet, should you ever deem me worthy.

Yours faithfully, Heinrich Lustenburg

The flag of the Teutonic Order flew atop the mast of the Singvogel as it came into the port of Lubeck, the capital of the leading merchant republic of the Hanseatic League. The knights on board had donned their armour so as to create a good first image in the minds of the locals; one of valiant knights instead of unshaven men in scruffy tunics.

Klaus stood at the bow of the ship and looked upon the city. The multitude of ships arriving and departing clearly showed the prosperity of the city that would hopefully be host to a new ballei of the Teutonic Order.

"A fine city that should provide us with many recruits, Landkomtur," Roland Fährmann, Klaus's second in command, commented whist standing beside him, "We need only hope that the people are loyal in their devotion to God".

"Have faith, brother. I was born in this city, and, from what I remember of it, the local people should be ripe for recruitment," Klaus responded, just as the ship came alongside the pier. "Our first order of business is to pray; after all, we have an image to keep up, gentlemen".

The party of knights, numbering twenty five, set off to the Lubeck cathedral to pray to God for good fortune in the coming days and prosperity for the new ballei. After their prayers, the platoon set off to the town hall to seek out the Stathalter.

October 1443

Albrecht was working tirelessly to finish up the training of the new recruits for the city guard, while many were fully trained, a few were still not fully trained. the expanded army were mainly made out of men at arms who were trained with the sword and pike, with about 500 men trained with bows to act as archers if an assault on the city ever happened. Mainly from Mecklenburg if they ever attacked again or if one mercenary company ever got the bright idea to attack the city, the walls would be fully manned and prepared to deal with any invasion.

The men were mainly recruited from the peasantry, mainly from fishermen who were looking to try and improve their lives with the extra pay that comes with being a city guard. Though you got the occasional son from a person with a trade or a merchant sons, just like Albrecht had done so many years ago after his farther had died. His brother had expanded the salt trade and was now profitable, though the threat of Mecklenburg cutting of the trade was always a threat to the business. Though why did Albrecht care after his brother excluded him, like the backstabber that he always was.

He was outside that day, it was a sunny day with clouds on the horizon that would spell rainfall on later, he was observing the men training. With their pikes and learning how to properly attack and what formations would be done by, the archers were also training by taking target practice and shooting at targets. Albrecht decided to walk into the courtyard to inspect the men.

Albrecht strolled into the courtyard like he was out for a walk, all of the men stopped what they were doing and went to attention. "Carry on." Albrecht stated and the men got back to training but with more finesse as the approach of the captain made them concentrate on their work more and have more finesse. The men were fine, but Albrecht wanted them to be better, fine was simply not enough for Albrecht. At the moment the Guards were simply no match for a profession army or a large mercenary company.

Albrecht went over to the men who were training who pikes and said, "Men, stop what you are doing." All of the men stopped their actions and looked at Albrecht. "This is how you handle a pike, you want to have your arms have a stronger grip further up the pike. As it will give you more force when attacking. Also when in formation you want to be as close together as possible, to give you a proper spear wall formation." Albrecht then gave the command to do as he said, the men immediately got into formation and repeated their exercise. While their had been some confusion over what the men had to do, Albrecht saw an immediate improvement of the mens ability.

Though the night was getting late, thus Albrecht started to walk home. His son, Ulfric was only a year old and had thankfully not suffered from any problems. Thankfully Marie had also survived, her family a group of farmers were doing well. Albrecht could remember the day he had met Marie.

((FLASHBACK.))
July 1438

Albrecht was patrolling through the market, it was late in the afternoon and the market stalls were packing up for the night, this was when thieves were out and thus Albrecht had to be alert. Though his head turned to other thoughts, "At the age of 36 and you still are not married Albrecht, you are running out of time." That was true, from his brother pretty much kicking Albrecht out of the family after he had joined the guards full time at 19, this made it difficult for Albrecht to find someone and any people that Albrecht could get, he simply was not interested in.

Though Albrecht's thoughts quickly changed when he saw someone stealing from a store and stealing some of their money, "Stop right there criminal scum" Albrecht shouted, "You have violated the law of Lubeck." Albrecht quickly pulled out his sword and approached the man, the man did indeed stop and didn't run and gave up, most likely realizing that running would result in his death.

Two more guards ran up to Albrecht, "Take this man to the jail, I will return the stolen money." Albrecht walked over to the stall and saw a sight, a woman more beautiful than any overs Albrecht had seen, though she hadn't seen Albrecht yet. "Here is your my lady." Albrecht said to gain her attention

The woman then turned round, Albrecht was more astounded by what he saw. A beautiful face like an angel, an ample bussom and she had a nice behind from what Albrecht had seen as well. "Well thank you sir, I thought that he was gone and I would have lost nearly all of today's income." The Woman...more like Lady replied, "Would you like to purchase any of the goods on this stall."

Albrecht hadn't noticed what was on it and now took a look, it was a meat store with some sort of animal. "What type of animal is it" Albrecht asked, "It better not be human."

The lady then laughed at that response, "If it was human, then we would probably be out of business." The lady said while laughing, she then went on to say, "No it isn't human, it is lamb. Though due to you saving the income made from it, you can take what you want. I would recommend to take this piece" She then gestured to the piece of lamb.

"Of course, ill take this piece." Albrecht stated while picking it up, Albrecht was considering his luck, thinking of how he was considering never meeting someone, but just now he did. "May I ask what is your name my lady, mine is Albrecht."

"Its Marie" Marie replied, while blushing. "If you want to get a discount on meat, ill be here from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday, enjoy your day Albrecht."

((Flash forward))

From then on, he took the time to divert his patrol to pass by the market, to meet Marie. Over time they changed from acquaintances to friends, though this changed when he started to court Marie and the two of them grew closer, Albrecht was thinking of marrying Marie in a while, when he got promoted to a higher position.

But in 1439 after a night of drinking he fell to one of the seven deadly sins, lust and did it with Marie. The memories are still foggy only that it had gone on for a while and they had rented a room in a tavern to do it. Filled with shame Albrecht decided to get it over with and finally marry Marie a month later. That was a good thing due to Marie being pregnant with Siegfried and now 2 years later, though for the shame that Albrecht had felt, Albrecht's life was good.

Captain of the Guards, due to his friendship with Xaver that had formed due to there mutual liking of chess. He had a beautiful wife and a healthy son. Albrecht's face had turned into a beaming smile when he arrived home, Albrecht was ready to face any of the challenges that the world threw at him.

Xaver was working in the town hall of Lübeck, checking the letters he had received. It seemed that an Italian mercenary captain had arrived in Lübeck. Deja vu! Luckily, he did not bring an entire army to the city gates. Instead he offered his services as general. He must have heard that the city was in need of a new military leader. Quickly he ordered some of his workers to fetch information on this man. They only found very little about him in the archives but nevertheless Xaver replied to Captain Cardorna at once.

((To Giovanni Cardorna))
Captain Cardorna,
As Statthalter I welcome you to the pride of the Hanseatic League, Lübeck. Our walls are high and manned with archers. Lübeck is currently searching for a general and so your application comes just in time. Let me ask you this question: Why do you want to serve Lübeck? You are of Italian heritage and far away from home. I hope to hear from you again. You can always stop by here at the town hall if you wish to speak to me in person.

~ Xaver von Warendorf, Statthalter of Lübeck

The second inquiry came from a sailor or captain, Xaver wasn't sure, who was looking for employment. The man had fled from Emperor Friedrich III's wrath after he lost an imperial ship during a pirate attack. He wanted to meet him in person before hiring him. The von Warendorfs could use a capable captain on board of one of their vessels.

((To Heinrich Lustenberg))
Dear Mr. Lustenberg,
I received your letter am sorry to hear that you suffered great losses against a pirate fleet.
As you probably know, my family runs a number of trading vessels for whom we need men. If that sounds to your liking then I'd like to meet you in person. Come to my mansion here in Lübeck on Wednesday afternoon to discuss business.

~ Xaver von Warendorf, Statthalter of Lübeck

Friedrich was walking around his mansion's garden. It was rather big and beautiful. Sun was shining. The weather was not too cold, even though it was already November.
It was so silent...

Friedrich sat next to a little pond the garden had. He started thinking about his family. His late wife and daughter. Who did they have to die? Friedrich could never understand that. Luckily he still have two healthy children. And both of his sisters are still okay. Though he misses having a wife. A wife who always was with him, who truly loved him and cared for him.

The silence didn't last long. Friedrich's cousin Alfred ran towards him. He had some news. It was a letter from the current Statthalter, Xaver von Warendorf. He was looking for a person with good military experience. He wanted to promote good tactician to a general.

Friedrich: "Seems like Xaver is preparing for a war... Or maybe he fears that Pomerania is going to attack us. Not a bad idea at all to promote a general."

Alfred: "You are right. But I also have some other news... I thought that maybe I could start a career in the military."

Friedrich was quiet for a while "So you want to rather become a general than a merchant?"

Alfred: "Well not a general as I don't have what it requires to become one, but maybe I could start a career as cavalryman. And maybe one day I can become a captain?"

Friedrich: "If that is what you want to do, then I cannot stop you, my cousin. Do you want me to write a letter to the good Statthalter?"

Alfred nodded "Yes, please." and he turned around "I have some work to do that you gave me earlier." And he walked away.

Good Statthalter von Warendorf

I write to you because of my cousin, Alfred Haas. He has gotten some military training when he was younger, and now he wanted me to write to you and ask if he could become a cavalryman. I know that a position in the cavalry unit is an honour, and of course challenging job, but I am sure he would be a good person for that position.

Maybe even one day he could become a Captain.

Friedrich Haas

Statthalter Xaver von Warendorf,

I am Hendrik van Buren, a large merchant in the Flemish textile trade. I have lived in Lübeck for quite some time now, and would like to work for your family as a merchant. I hope to be able to enlargen the fortune of both our families with my many connections in Flanders, Brabant and Holland. Is there a spot free in your busy scedule to discuss my oppertunities as one of your employees?

I hope to hear from you soon, Hendrik van Buren

Statthalter Warendorf,
I grow old, and with the defeat at Varna, I decided to retire, and far from the infidel, though when I heard you where seeking military expertise, well, old habits die hard.
I am making my way to town hall to discuss this in person.

((ECONOMIC POINT SYSTEM
Note: This is a system we are testing out, it will be in affect for two chapters, if it works, we will keep using it, if not, then the system will be abolished and removed.

ECONOMIC POINTS

Each player has a wealth rating dependent on their jobs, for example, if they work in the advisory council for the current Statthalter, this will give them a higher rating than for say, being a small merchant or craftsman. This allows them to then have a certain amount of economic points per turn, each event that requires money in the game will be took from the characters economic points (EP).
Each patrician family in the game has a minimum of two bribes they can give, these bribes can be used to make a character vote for them in an election, if accepted, the money comes from the Patricians Heads EP pool. bribes can be increased with the individual wealth of the head of the Patrician family.
Bribes can also be done by non-patricians, with a cap of two, the money given in the bribe has to be from the characters EP pool and cannot go over.
Economic points can be gained by taking loans from the government, or private bank, at a rate of interest, this will increase your economic points by a certain amount for a turn, but lower your gain the next.
Wealth Ratings

Peasants are the poor people working the land, usually on farms, usually under the much richer noblemen/lord mayors.
  • 0,5EP/chapter
Burghers are the people of the city, working in guilds, the smiths, weavers, dyers, seafarers and small merchants of the nation.
  • 2EP/chapter
Employees of Patricians are those who work directly under a patrician family, as either a captain of the ship, a general in their army, as well as merchants working for the patricians
  • 2EP/chapter
Unlanded Noblemen are those who come from a noble background, but do not have any land in their name.
  • 2.5EP/Chapter
Envoys are those working under the Statthalter and their family, but not directly advising them. This includes colonists, merchants, generals, admirals, conquistador and explorers.
  • 3EP/Chapter
Landed Noblemen/Lord Mayors are the large landowners of the republic, often having hundreds of peasants working on their land. This class also includes the clergy and missionary.
  • 3,5EPChapter
The Big Merchants are some of the richest in the republic, they are the engines and juggernauts of our economy. To become a big merchant you must have a minimum of 30 EP saved up, aswell as always having 30EP on you at all times, in addition, you must have more EP than any of the existing big merchants, with the lowest one being downgraded to a small merchant. There will be a maximum of three big merchants.
This class also includes those working directly under the Statthalter, such a their advisory council.
  • 5EP/Chapter
Patricians are the richest of the rich, the elite of the republic, our very leaders. Their wealth is immense, their political power extreme and even though there are many rabbits in Lübeck, Patricians are very rare.
  • 7,5EP/Chapter
EP will be tracked by@LadyAlyssa
Direct any queries or questions to her.
