20 Oct 1569: we declare war on Spain. They are supported by Venice, Mameluks and Navarra; Austria and the Teutonic Order drop out. We are joined by Hannover, Hessen and Bohemia; Thuringen drops out but agrees to rejoin the alliance, putting our relations to +193. On 8 Nov we capture Honduras. We reestablish a TP at Niteroi on the 18th, and capture the TP at Costa Rica on the 26th. This was followed ib 19 Dec by Mosquitos. 22 Dec: Prussia, backed by England, has decided to join us in taking Spain down a notch!
I have a note saying Hessen defeats Spain on 8 Jan 1570, but I'm not sure what it means.
Three days later we captured the TP at Nicaragua but were attacked by the natives; we torch Costa Rica and retreat to there, letting the natives torch Nicaragua.
And then I offered the Spanish alliance a separate peace for cash; Spain agreed and paid some 135 gold; enough to let me pay off that last loan the next month.
24 Mar: Spain has ceded Flanders to the Netherlands; we must keep our eyes on these Dutch and make sure they do not become too powerful. At this point the Hanse had overtaken Spain for first place in the victory point race.
Hessen captured Luxemburg in late Apr and Artois by Jul. In early Dec we failed our attempt at a TP at Costa Rica; meanwhile Venice invaded Oldenburg. And on the final day of the year, we donated maps to Thuringen and, while they were drooling over the exquisite detail, got them to agree to vassalage.
Dynastic ties were forged with England on 6 Jun 1571. In Sep we reached Land Tech 11, allowing our armies to explore. At this point all taxes went to treasury until two more factories were built. 28 Nov: It is doubtful that Spain poses much threat any longer to Europe's balance of power. She has ceded Luxemburg to Hessen; indeed, we should not allow Hessen to expand any further. And finally, to round out the year, we succeeded on our second attempt at a TP at Costa Rica.
