20 Oct 1569: we declare war on Spain. They are supported by Venice, Mameluks and Navarra; Austria and the Teutonic Order drop out. We are joined by Hannover, Hessen and Bohemia; Thuringen drops out but agrees to rejoin the alliance, putting our relations to +193. On 8 Nov we capture Honduras. We reestablish a TP at Niteroi on the 18th, and capture the TP at Costa Rica on the 26th. This was followed ib 19 Dec by Mosquitos. 22 Dec: Prussia, backed by England, has decided to join us in taking Spain down a notch!

I have a note saying Hessen defeats Spain on 8 Jan 1570, but I'm not sure what it means. Three days later we captured the TP at Nicaragua but were attacked by the natives; we torch Costa Rica and retreat to there, letting the natives torch Nicaragua. And then I offered the Spanish alliance a separate peace for cash; Spain agreed and paid some 135 gold; enough to let me pay off that last loan the next month.

24 Mar: Spain has ceded Flanders to the Netherlands; we must keep our eyes on these Dutch and make sure they do not become too powerful. At this point the Hanse had overtaken Spain for first place in the victory point race. Hessen captured Luxemburg in late Apr and Artois by Jul. In early Dec we failed our attempt at a TP at Costa Rica; meanwhile Venice invaded Oldenburg. And on the final day of the year, we donated maps to Thuringen and, while they were drooling over the exquisite detail, got them to agree to vassalage.

Dynastic ties were forged with England on 6 Jun 1571. In Sep we reached Land Tech 11, allowing our armies to explore. At this point all taxes went to treasury until two more factories were built. 28 Nov: It is doubtful that Spain poses much threat any longer to Europe's balance of power. She has ceded Luxemburg to Hessen; indeed, we should not allow Hessen to expand any further. And finally, to round out the year, we succeeded on our second attempt at a TP at Costa Rica.

Well there you go, I visited the EUI AARs :)

I like the AAR, although I don't have time to read all of it right now. One thing I don't like however is the blue color you use for dates, it hurts my eyes. :p

On New Year's Day 1572 we discovered a depopulated Susquehanna (guess the Paxton Boys were early), and eight days later we discovered Table (next week: Chairs :p ). Prussia rejected our overtures on 11 Mar. In mid Apr we discovered Ciskei and were attacked by the locals; our troops retreated in order to avoid a massacre. And in late May we discovered Powhattan, where we stayed to pacify the natives. Kustrin revolted in Oct, but we defeated them on 8 Nov, the same day as we founded a TP at Powhattan.

A couple marriages in '73: with the TO in late Apr, and with the Swiss in early Aug. We discovered Bushman on the last day of Sep, and in early Dec Powhattan was upgraded to a colony. 1 Feb 1574: Our army has arrived at Hannover for 'inspections'; Hessen should agree to become our vassal once again with our army on their border. And so they did.

On 9 Mar 1574 we discover Mamaqua, and the next day, um, well, my note looks to read "wipe oup tairos" maybe 'wipe out natives'? Hm, and actually my note for 29 Nov reads "TP Namaqua"; now I'm wondering which spelling is correct. In between these notes, we completed a Naval Manu at Holstein in Aug while being again rebuffed by Prussia. And another oops: it was our trade income from Andalusia we didn't want to lose when Spain last embargoed us; there wasn't a CoT at Zacatecas until 1575, which we monopolized that Apr. Also in Apr Wurtemburg refused our marriage proposal.

On the bright side, we completed a Naval Manu at Bemen in Aug, and upgraded Niteroi to a colony on 9 Dec. When Fearless Leader made an appearance on one of our warships, they had a big banner reading 'Mission Accomplished'. That and our Naval Tech went to 8 in Sep 1576. 28 Feb 1577: Persia has embargoed our merchants! Unfortunately, they are distant enough to make a war very inconvenient. But we will remember this slight.

Prussia finally agreed to dynastic ties on 19 May. In Jul of the following year there was a native uprising in Powhattan, but we defeated them within the week. In early Sep Wurtemburg again rebuffed our overtures, and England began a long running refusal to exchange maps. Mtawa was discovered on 15 May 1579. We founded a TP at Niassa on 4 Nov, and discovered Tanga on 9 Jan 1580. Also on that date, we lay down a few keels on both banks of the Elbe estuary.

And this is a, um, convenient place to pause. ;)

16 Jan 1580:Europe Goes to War! France (backed by Sco, Nap, Tus, Hel, Gen, and Por) vs Spain (with Ven, Mam, and Aus). Two weeks later the Knights (Pol-Lith, Neth) declare against France. Sweden rejected a royal marriage at the end of May, and at some point along here we discovered Mombasa. In Aug our Infra Tech reached 6, so we could build more factories. 20 Dec:Naples returns to its original size, ceding Romagna to Turkey.

A new CoT opened at Holland in 1581. 19 Feb:Spain has embargoed us again! Shall we declare on them now?
Not yet; our alliance expires before the year is out. Let us wait until then so they would have to work hard to reach us.
Three days later France cedes Calais to the Dutch. And in May we started a Goods Manu at Magdeurg.

More next time when we enter Nov.

Good update Pat, that large European war should give you some chances to increase your influence and land in Europe.

Also a little late but still, Happy Birthday. Hope you had a great day yesterday :)

3 Nov 1581:Our alliance expires; the time has come to declare against Spain. Venice, Mameluks and Austria join Spain. Now recreate a military alliance, with Bohemia and Saxony. Three weeks later, we captured Mosqutos; three weeks after that, the TP at Isthmus. During Jan 1582 we captured those at Cupica and then Cartagena. Upon this last on 27 Jan, we torched all three TPs and demanded cash of Spain. They agreed, and we used the money to send four merchants to Zacatecas and start a Goods Manu at Chesapeake.

18 Aug:Little Genoa will have a difficult time holding on to Ostmarch now that Austria has ceded it to them. 24 Aug:Russia has vassalized Pskov! But given that they have stalled on the Steppes, this does not seem much. 8 Nov:Spain has ceded Artois to France! We must be prepared against France or the Netherlands; it is time to bring Hessen into our alliance.

Genoa getting Ostmarch? Hmmm, intrigueing, I wonder what they intend to do with it the short time they have it.
Lose it to rebels. :p Sweden's province out on the Steppes was the same way, up until my most recent war with P-L when Prussia freed the city from rebel scum. That's why in my recently reported war against Spain I marched south, taking 1 city and a few TPs rather than north taking lots of cities: all of Azteca and the Yucatan were, are, and (if I have anything to say about it :D ) always will be rebel controlled. At one point so was all of Cuba, but they've taken that back.

This is a good point to reflect on the Balance in Europe. France has made major gains in northern Italy, absorbing Savoy, Milan, and Parma, as well as other gains not yet reported, but has lost Champaign (Palatinate) and all of Aquitaine (Spain), and gained but lost Calais (Dutch). England was racked for a while by civil war, but has since recovered. They have made no gains in Europe but are a colonial power to be reckoned with. Austria is a shadow of its former self; in fact, I pity them enough to do all in my power to make sure they remain Emperor. Spain has conquered but not really gained Azteca and conquered Aquitaine, but the Inca are as yet untouched (not for lack of declaring war). Poland made some early gains, but have long since stalled because they keep trying to attack me. Russia, too, made a good start but, with the Golden Horde in separate pieces, the AI has reached a dead end. The Dutch are doing ok. Turkey has made good gains in Europe but has stumbled with the Arabs.

Nice to see you have been updating a lot lately Pat, good work.
Interesting to read about the situation in the world, I am certain you should be able to aid the Austrians in the best possible way so make sure the Habsburg family stays as Imperial family :)

Mostly because I'm better off with a weak Emperor than, say, a French one. Updates are easy to write often when there's a couple months of gaming to catch up on. :eek:o Now where did I leave off? Ah yes, the French and European War (which actually lasts a dozen years):

We laid the foundations for a Goods Manu at Delaware in Dec 1582, defeated a few pirates in early 1583, and started a Naval Manu at Isle Royale in Oct, after which all taxes went to naval research. And on Boxing Day we established a TP at Cartegena, having failed in our attempt the previous year.

In Jan 1584 our naval tech went to 10. 7 Jan:The Emperor has ceded Tyrol to France! Bad enough they dominated the old Kingdom of Lombardy, but this opens the door to the German Kingdom. In Aug our naval tech again advanced, and on the 26th we arranged a marriage with Sweden. Powhattan became a city on 22 Nov.

New Year's 1585 brought new news: Naval tech 12 and a new CoT at Delaware, which we monopolized by Apr. In May we discovered the Iroquois at Shenandoah. Oct was a month of farsight, as we gained Early Optics in naval tech. Not only that, but on the 2nd Sweden's military alliance expired and they agreed to join our. Cartegena got upgraded to a colony in late Nov.

4 Jan 1586:Spain has discovered peace - they have ceded both Franche Comte' and Emilia to Genoa.
These Genoese; they would be more of a danger if their provinces were not so disjointed, but still. We must make certain they enjoy the penalties for their actions.

and that looks like a good place to leave off.

Go Genoa!! They are probably going to mess up with those provinces too.
Probably; I tried getting one of them to Bohemia, but they wouldn't bite. :( Now, I really must catch up on my notes: I just filled an entire side of an envelope last night with wars...

In Jul 1586 we discovered an English TP at Catawba. Denmark rejected a renewal of our dynastic tie in early Sep. In Oct our naval tech increased to 14, and on Dec first we founded a TP at Massachussetts.

3 Feb 1587:The Dutch, backed by Pol-Lith and the Knights, have declared against Turkey, which is supported by Georgia, Wallachia, Tunisia, Cyrenaica and Crimea. 7 Jul:Things are moving against Turkey: now Venice, with the Mameluks, Spain and Austria, are at war with them. We failed to establish a TP at Barahona both this year and next. On the bright side, our naval tech advanced again in Oct 1588; once more and we will be able to build a shipyard. And as we discover Catskill on Boxer Day, we set all taxes to cash.

In Apr 1589 we defeated the pirate Smiley off Chesapeak Bay, and chased him down to Cape Hatteras where he smiled no more. Denmark finally agreed to a new royal marriage on 30 Aug, and the very next day our naval tech advanced as our treasury filled up to just barely enough to start construction of a shipyard at Bremerhaven. And on 5 Dec we finally achieved our TP at Barahona. Wurtemburg, however, rejected dynastic ties in mid Sep 1591.

18 Dec 1591, in the Reading Room of the Lubeck Museum:Ah, everything is running smoothly. In a mere two weeks, our military alliance will expire; reestablishing it with Sweden will push our relations high enough that they might agree to be our vassal.
Oh s**t, here comes Junior to bother me; that's never a good sign...

Jolly nice to see that you are building a shipyard and now you shall get Sweden as a vassal as well. Good work :)
