I would assume that it's not onlt those but also feeders and handelers and assosiated troops. In much the same way that an artilery unit in EU3 was not 1000 gunners never mind 1000 guns
It is no doubt an abstraction. At least 250 elephants is not completely rediculous. I just hope that elephants are very expensive and not a steamroller on the battlefield. I have never cared much for using them in any ancient wargame. A bit too much of a loose cannon for my tastes. I greatly prefer some solid pikemen.

Yes it is. To give you an example of how much an elephant was worth in the ancient world.... Seleucos I Nicator gave up most of modern Afghanistan, Kashmir and North West India to the Mauryans for 500 elephants because he thought it could ensure a complete domination of the west. At very few times was more than 100 elephants fielded.
I realize that 250 elephants in a single battle is extreme; 80 at Zama was considered a very large contingent at the time; I was just saying that 250 is much better than 1000+. Again, it's all an acceptable abstraction to my mind.
And what about escorts? Each elephant had an escort Like I said before, each elephant needed around 50 people to be efficent battlefield weapon. Saying that each elephant unit is 250 elephants strong is like saying that German WW-2 armoured division had something under 1000 man, counting tank crews only.
Using this 50 people/elephant gives us clear 20 elephants per unit, which (considering their cost) is represenative for this timeperiod
Well I don't know about 50 support personal per elephant, but I am perfectly happy to not dig too deeply into the weeds and accept some abstraction. As long as elephant units are very expensive to recruit and maintain I will be happy. I just don't want to see the AI spam them out all over the place. I prefer a good solid Legion or Phalanx anyway.
Well im gonna say they're TEN elephants..mwhaha, my elephant troops will be twice as strong!! ...lol. Anyway, AAR tmrw?! YES THERE WILL BE ..or my name ins't Samuel De Brine Jehova Williams!
Could any army not behind walls really stand against The Thousand Elephant Army? No. No they couldn't...unless they fought in heavy forrest or had a hell of a lot of skirmishers or put down stakes or...
Well, it'll take a while to put all INF and CAV as well. In fact, I can't imagine such a battle in EU:R terms...
BTW, what about modding and 'start in whatever moment you wish'? Are they always up-to-date (i.e. if I start 2/9/31 BC will my fleet fight battle of Actium)? I'm asking about EU3 here as both use the same engine...

I really doubt it. To cover EVERY campaign and EVERY battle - the ones we know about - would be an incredible feat. EU3 didn't bother, it just set you up geopolitically and left it to you to get the chaps where you wanted them.
