WOW! That is some serious cash early game. That also explains how you can afford merc stacks like that.
Are you planning on building heavy ships to fend off the europeans before they can land troops? I've successfully done that with relative ease with capital migrating Norway and Navarra games in previous game versions. The AI is not always the best at protecting their transports
Edit: Typoes again (probably more I've overlooked though )...
waste of income. This is very hard difficulty, and they will likely have huge fleet.
I rather fight them head on after they land, they can only drop off a stack equal to their transport fleet. The land is where its at. If they declare, all you need is to protect the war target province for 5 years and you got 25 + battle warscore to demand their colonies.
But, I will build transport fleet and explorer fleet, to appease your fleet hunger
Edit: "all you need is to protect 5 years" Now I jinxed myself..

I'll be very happy if I can manage sunset invasion achievement conditions using Haida, and if I can grab all institution origin provinces for the achievement.
I seriously doubt WC will be possible, given current institution spread mechanic. You won't be able to protecorate Ming and Asia late game, as they simply won't be eglible.
And, protectorates are not useful anymore. Even IF I somehow manage to protecorate Ming they'd simply go independent if they embrace enough institutions..

It might seem weird that I didn't fight versus Castile or Venice. But the goal is to reform government here. Castile wants this land, and they want to take it NOW. The moment a colonial nation would form, they will NOT want it in a peace deal. That may sound highly illogical, but it is the way this works.
Atwix, I'm confused by your intention here. Are you implying that it is bad if the land goes to a colonial nation instead of Castile? Will you not be able to reform the government if the colonial nation cores the land?

no, you misunderstood. I'm talking about what provinces the AI is WILLING to accept in an offer peace deal.
Castile wanted several of my provinces. They will accept it. But if a colonial nation forms, then they will NOT accept those provinces, as it is then deemed castille cannot core these provinces, as no core of castile is nearby. The MOMENT a colonial nation forms, the overlord will NOT accept your provinces anymore, and only peace out for gold. It is really weird, and hard to explain, as the overlord CAN feed natives to CN with wars. Maybe I'm missing something obvious here that explains this..
you can reform government of colonial nation cores; I did it here.
Another treason why I did offer peace deal: with a no cb war you can't get warscore enough to ask for a province, due to no ticking warscore.
We just reformed our government, we got 9/9/9 tech.
After our fresh king fulfilled his homework (creating an heir), he started leading Haida once more..
This seriously long chapter will tell how the Haida fared in their first wars with the European colonizers.
A few tribes got diplo vassalised, and integrated into our great nation.
Haida took exploration idea group, and invested the banked diplo points into it.
A colony was started in Chisedec near Newfoundland, next to Scotland.
Spies started observing the Scottish, and the fleets patrolling the strait.
Note that THIS is the reason why I invaded East America in the 15th century
The ports grabbed back then now allow Haida to colonize this, and to start exploring from this new colony once the colony finishes..
So… Haida hired an explorer. Eagle Eye Atwix his ravens had stolen the plans for European ships.
A very SHAKY explorer started sailing the sea towards Newfoundland
And Haida practised sea faring with their new transport fleet.
Our explorer sailed into the Caribbean. They needed to warm up
Back home, the king dealt with a band of smugglers operating around the Caribbean.
Their leader was surprised when the Haida king made him an offer..
The smugglers would receive Haida gold, if they would help to spy on the European colonizers.
The leader realized that this job was easier then smuggling, and agreed.
The Haida explorer discovered that Portugal had colonized the ENTIRE Caribbean, and were now busy busy in Florida.
A hired Portuguese conquistador uncovered the land south, into Colombia.
Scotland was also colonizing in that area!
Castile is expanding in Mexico and new Castile CN is growing.
The hired smugglers reported that Scotland had embraced the printing press. The Haida were all illiterate, and were quite curious about these strange books.
"We need to steal this knowledge at some point! Making my people literate will help Haida to equal to the colonizers, knowledge wise.."
Eagle-Eye Atwix sent a raven along with the smuggler captain, and asked him to start spying on Castile instead.
The spirit god wanted them to steal maps of the North Atlantic sea.
The smugglers obliged..
Haida can now SAIL to Europe
The smugglers received furs, gold, cocoa and whatever they desired for their effort..
Since Castile became a little too 'hot' after stealing those maps, the king sent the smugglers to spy on Scotland once more..
Haida took religious group as second idea group, and unlocked the first idea.
We now have a just cause to attack anyone that neighbors us!
Especially Scotland. We border them near Newfoundland, after all
Our explorer now had trustworthy sea legs, and crossed the South Atlantic! He stumbled upon a new continent. Africa!
More and more knowledge of Europe was gained.
The nation of FRANCE was discovered. They seemed really big, and they hated Castile.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Eagle-Eye Atwix said.
He ordered his king to start trading with the French.
France basically did the same as Castile did, decades ago.
They delivered western muskets and artillery, and army instructors, to Haida.
In exchange for Tobacco, cocoa, sugar and gold..
The price for these goods increased in Europe, as Haida helped creating a demand for it.
Slowly but steadily, the Haida bow and tomahawk got buried.. And Haida started adopting the idea of long range fighting, with muskets and cannons..
The famous hired Blackfoot general understood the need for this, and followed the teachings of these instructors..
But Eagle-Eye Atwix grew very concerned with these weird Blackcoats, that accompanied the French traders.
They started preaching the Christian religion to his people.
Eagle-Eye Atwix realized that befriending these christians also had.. side effects
Something needed to be done about this!
The king kept on working, and Haida now was BIG enough to be considered a 'real' KINGDOM by European standards.
The transport fleet got enough practise sailing around, and the freshly drilled recruits boarded the ships, along with their brand new muskets and artillery!
Scotland has lost all its alliances with Catholics, after they flipped to reformed religion. They did a few wars with Norway and lost, and they had no allies now.. And almost no ships.
Haida surprised Europe. The former native tribe launched a surprise invasion of Scotland!
Let's show those infidels who is boss
Different landing fleets were assigned, and Europe was watching this sunset invasion with amusement.
Surely, these American natives would be crushed!
Right?
The colony of Scotland in Colombia got overrun..
The colony of Scotland in Newfoundland got overrun..
And Scotland itself got overrun
After the war with Norway, they almost had no army left.
The remainder of the Scottish army cowered in the Western Isles..
The Haida explorer was grateful for the stolen maps of the North Atlantic, and now started exploring the Entire coastline of Western Europe. Including the Baltic Sea.
The Haida army finished sieging the Highlands fort, and general Koya Kiusta boldly ATTACKED the Scottish army across the strait
Time to test these muskets and 5k cannons!
FIRE!
*STOMP*
It is actually quite amusing
Haida had BETTER military tech then Scotland, and our army had MORE tactics then them!
The French instructors did a good job
The Haida general swelled, seeing his triumphant musket troops march to the Scottish capital..
The 5k artillery would really help with the siege!
The colony of Chisedec had finished, and now Haida had coring range all the way up to Aberdeenshire
In case you wonder: YES, I planned that ahead. Part of the plan to get coring range into Europe..
Our explorer came back with more insights of the political situation in Europe.
Two more greater powers were uncovered..
A big nation called Commonwealth was discovered.
And the nation of Muscovy has a personal union over SWEDEN.
Don't look at me, nothing to do with it!
"What the heck is a personal union? Sounds interesting!" Eagle-Eye Atwix pondered..
General Kiusta didn't care about personal unions.. He wanted LAND
Scotland got almost fully annexed.. They have a few provinces left in Newfoundland, and a few in Colombia..
Haida kicked a European colonizer OUT of Europe
Right.
Eagle Eye Atwix started converting these infidel lands..
But..
The spirit god had made a BIG enemy in Scotland
John Knox, the man who introduced the Reformed religion into Scotland.
He had to flee the Scottish capital, and took a ship towards Colombia, once he heard the Haida were attempting to convert the Presbytarian Scots there..
The Birth of the Reformed Churches
The Reformed Churches formed one branch of the Protestant churches that broke from the Roman Catholic Church of that day. They began in the sixteenth century in Switzerland under the leadership of Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin. Calvin’s teachings became the dominant and leading force in these churches as they spread across Europe, particularly to France, the Netherlands, Scotland, and, by the eighteenth century, to North America, Africa, Hungary, Indonesia, and many other parts of the globe.
John Calvin was born in Noyon, France, in 1509. Educated in the humanities, he earned his academic stripes summa cum laude at age 24. Inspired by the teachings of reformers like Martin Luther, Calvin took up serious study of the Bible. His education and his knowledge of Greek and Hebrew gave him access to what for most people remained a hidden book. His study of the Bible prompted him to write commentaries on almost every book of Scripture. He never did tackle the book of Revelation, which may have been wise on his part, given the endless variety of interpretations that generate so much more heat than light today. He also wrote a fabulous summary of biblical teaching entitled The Institutes of the Christian Religion. Calvin’s works still serve as excellent resources for studying God’s Word. In fact, the Institutes have just been translated and published in Russian and are enjoying an enthusiastic response.
Because he was persecuted by the Roman Church, Calvin had to flee France. He was drafted by another Reformer, Guillaume Farel, to support the Protestant cause in Geneva, Switzerland. There Calvin became an active preacher, teacher, leader, and proponent of Reformation teachings. While in many ways a child of his age, Calvin made a tremendous contribution to helping us understand the Bible and the faith to which it calls us.
Reformed teaching was introduced to Scotland by John Knox, who was initially influenced by the Lutheran stream of the Reformation. His teacher, Patrick Hamilton, was burned to death for his faith, and Knox himself was captured by the French and forced into hard labor as a galley slave. Once freed, he studied with Calvin in Geneva, returning to Scotland in 1559. In spite of stiff opposition from both church and state, Knox succeeded in establishing what came to be known as the Presbyterian Church.
Europe was stunned.. The American natives had actually pulled their sunset invasion off!
Haida was now considered a greater power once more..
The PU mechanic stirred up quite the fuss in Europe. This time, the old alliance between Castile and Portugal got dissolved, after Castile had laid claim to the Portuguese throne..
Important tip: the AI will break alliance now if you claim their throne. Not sure if you can avoid this when having REALLY high relation, but I think not. But who knows.
Haida had other issues though. John Knox had arrived in Colombia, and led a reformed zealot stack against the vile natives!
I actually colonized ALL the provinces towards Colombia with this in mind. It costs me an arm and a leg to establish this connection.. But I wanted to make SURE that these zealots would be able to walk towards Mexico. Back in 1.13 zealots would NOT walk over uncolonised land into your unoccupied land. The stacks can teleport, but I wanted to make SURE they had a direct route towards Mexico.
John Knox invades Haida! He left burned colonies behind, and advanced into the Mexican heartland, force converting the Haida as he went..
Eagle Eye Atwix was furious. It turned out the Queen Regent secretly admired John Knox, and the new king of the Haida had adopted his faith, after secret Presbyterian lessons to her child..!
General Kiusta was also converted by the Scots in Aberdeenshire, and refused to send the army back to Mexico.
It seems the totem spirit is in a bit of trouble here
Castile looked at the trouble in Haida, and they deemed the time was right to declare war.
General Kiusta had landed in Colombia only months before, to support John Knox and his zealots.
It now seemed they had a new mission.. To protect the province of Tizapan at ALL costs, to get ticking war score versus Castile..
General Kiusta led the army past the zealot occupied land, and started sieges in New Castile.
So far, no Castilian troops had landed..
General Kiusta took advantage of this. He occupied most of New Castile, while the colonial army sieged our vassal on the Mississipi estuary, in Louisiana.
General Kiusta engaged the Castilian colonial army head on!
His musket infantry started the hostilities..
The Castilians were defeated!
The famous general gave chase to them.
A traveling minstrel was inspired by his deeds, and sang about his glorious victories
FIRE!
*STOMP*
Eagle-Eye Atwix told general Kiusta that the Castilian heir, Fernando de Trastemara, was hiding up with 7000 troops, to the west.
The Haida spirit god had foreseen his doom, and decided to help the Haida while he still could..
The Haida cornered the Castilians, and drove them out..
The last Castilian soldiers in Mexico were brutally slaughtered
The Castilian heir was captured, to be held for ransom..
Meanwhile, the colonist from Haida was busy on Aleut, near the Bering Sea. Some squaws were sent, to support the colonizers with… ehh... care
Castile didn't dare to send more invasion troops as long as Haida held their heir to the throne captive.
Castile got dragged into a war versus the Ottomans, when they attacked their ally Venice. The AI likely saw that war as MORE important.
So, why not erase Xiu off the map? Our mission demands it!
John Knox watched, and approved. He now had MORE natives to convert!
The war score for holding the war target province was still ticking, so…
General Kiusta invaded someone else
He attacked the salty mountain nation of Muisca, when their ally had serious debt. They dishonored alliance..
Muisca was behind in military tech. They had refused to do business with their neighbor Scotland, and they still clung to the old way of spear and bow..
The mountain capital wasn't built to withstand artillery fire. After three months, the capital surrendered
Haida slaughtered their battered army, and 100% war score was obtained.. In the end, they got full annexed.
Meanwhile, general Kiusta lead a DANGEROUS invasion of the European Mainland
Castile had obtained the Burgundian inheritance..
Rebels had occupied some provinces in the Lowlands, so the Castilian armies likely were busy in the Mediterranean..
John Knox and his zealots were transported by the rebellious Haida army to the north.
General Kiusta cleared the rebel armies, that might engage the zealots..
I actually hadn't expected the zealots to relocate and walk to the OTHER side of my vassal, but when they did, I was like "Go ahead!"
John Knox didn't even have to siege the capital fort. The garrison simply left the fort and handed the capital to him..
The religious zealot stack was close to force converting ENTIRE Mexico region..
Its quite funny, but the POPE cleared the rebels in the lowlands. He was in the war versus Ottomans also..
Eagle-Eye Atwix was close to being abandoned by his people..
The ancient spirit god didn't mind though. There were other American tribes that he could guide versus the colonizers.
He did admire what the nation he had helped was doing..
As one of his last acts, he sent another famous general named Koya Klinkwan (4/5/2/2 general) from the dead nation of Muisca into Haida. The man got expelled from the tribe for adopting the teachings of John Knox, and now he rushed to the aid of him..
Don't look at me! Getting this event TWICE in a campaign… Fortune favours the bold, I suppose..
He tore down the totem pole from Eagle-Eye Atwix, and forced Haida to adopt REFORMED as their new state religion.
He then returned back to Scotland, exhausted..
I had completely forgotten that the rebels could enforce demands, after occupying my capital for 2 years. The only downside was that the provinces occupied by the zealots got +25% autonomy.
Oh well.
The totem spirit flew over Haida one last time, before departing. He conjured another totem pole, with his final message carved into it.
Eagle-Eye Atwix then departed north, to guide the tribes in Louisiana..
King Masset understood the message of the ancient spirit.
And he would try to act upon the advice.
King Masset was now the ruler of the world's BIGGEST reformed nation!
He took the relevant national decisions, including.. dissolution of the monasteries.
Right
Back to our Europe invasion..
Castile had NO access through France. So, the siege armies were relatively safe.
They COULD reach them through the HRE, but they didn't until now..
Castile landed some troops with their fleet. Stupid AI didn't even send ENOUGH to besiege the fort..
And guess who comes strolling in from the terra incognita?
The Ottomans!
"Hi there Ottomans!" said general Klinkwan.
"Say what? Who we are and where we come from?"
"America! You don't know about us? I don't know about you either!"
"No, don't mind US, we are just practising sieges! We are ehhh.. relatively new to the idea of using artillery versus forts!"
The Venetian-Ottoman war over Athens indirectly triggered the religious war of the protestant league. Many powerful nations couldn't join it due to other wars, and Brandenburg declared the war in 1598! It seems the Palatinate is the HRE emperor; I got no clue what happened to Austria..
Castile now turned its gaze towards the Lowlands.. Our siege stack got routed after a surprise attack.
But… Then the Ottoman stack engaged THEM.
"Hi Castile! You want peace? Why would we? The Ottomans are slapping you silly! Besides, we need the siege practise!"
"We are getting quite GOOD at it!" added general Klinkwan..
A conquistador opened up the way to travel to Iberia, through France..
Mercs were hired in the Lowlands.
The idea was to try and press into Castile.
But.. That plan got altered, as an opportunistic chance revealed itself..
Portugal was fighting in the league war, and was under siege by Hungary.
HMMM. Portugal has NO allies, after Castile claimed their throne and Portugal broke their alliance with them.
I actually paused for a LONG while here, considering my options.
Sieging Castile itself wouldn't really give me a lot MORE warscore. The Castilians were exhausted, and a BIG peace deal was possible NOW.
So, I started wondering what I would ASK from Castile…
I asked the coastlines in Mexico, and gave Totonac all its cores back, except the province inside a state of mine.
I also asked a bridgehead port in South America: the province of Cayenne. It would expand our coring range.
But Haida also wanted something in return for sieging the Lowlands. The province of ANTWERP was demanded also, and Brabant got released as vassal BEFORE the HRE emperor could do unlawful territory demand on us..
Right.
Haida is a Christian nation now, so because of that foothold in Europe, ENTIRE Europe got revealed to us..
Hmm. Let me see.
Sweden still in PU under Muscovy. Commonwealth. Ottoman blob. Battle pope owning north Italy.
Oh, so THAT is why the Palatinate is emperor. Hungary got a PU over Austria, and INTEGRATED them
Sure, why not
It explains why they are fielding such large stacks in this league war..
Time for a VERY opportunistic move. A colony was started near Florida, to border Portugal CN, and to get HOLY WAR cb on them.
The Portuguese fleet was blockading the occupied CN in Florida, and wouldn't stop an invasion of their heartland..
21k Portuguese troops were still in Portugal though. So, we offloaded our own troops on TOP of the Hungarian siege stack in Lisboa!
The troops who sieged the Lowlands in the Castilian war lost black flag status inside vassal Brabant, and then headed back through France, through Castile (Portugal had access, so we had access through Castile even though they hate our guts). And the 21k stack, led by our new killer general, started siege on the northeast province of Brabança.
Right.
Hungary finished the siege on Lisboa, and engaged the Portuguese army right after.
GOOD!
What can I say? Opportunism for the win
We sieged down Brabança, and Hungary is helping our 800 men to siege down the fort in Algarve in our name. It fell right after this.
By the way, THANKS A BUNCH Hungary! You are a real good meat shield, comparable to the Ottomans in the Castilian war
The war of Venice and the Ottomans ended, and they ALL enforced peace on the warleaders of the league war, to enter the league war.
Better late then never, they must have thought!
This was actually in our advantage, as Hungary was now trapped near us, and 'protected' us from the routed Portuguese stack that had fled to Ceuta and the Moroccan land of Portugal beyond..
Haida did another flipflop into greater power status. We always are on 8th or 9th place..
Back home in Mexico, the other half of our army did its best to fend off the armies from the Portuguese colonial nations.
They provided a load of war score; enough to get ticking war score from battle score!
A small stack managed to siege down the capital of the Florida CN, after it got retaken by the Portuguese from Brandenburg occupation.
The stray colonial stacks kept on providing war score..
As said, Ottomans and Castile both joined the league war with enforce peace.
Which led, hilariously enough, to the Portuguese being destroyed by the Ottomans.
By now our siege stacks had been sailed back to America, to help in obtaining more war score there.. General Klinkwan wiped one Portuguese stack after another..
This Europe.. Muscovy integrated Sweden. Castile is getting roflstomped by the protestant league war members.
After a LONG struggle, Brandenburg made an end to the league war. The protestants WON!
The new elected emperor was Trier, and the old catholic HRE emperor said "Sod it!" and converted to Protestantism also.
Ottomans gained a foothold in south Italy.
Meanwhile, France had started an invasion of Castile, and joined the dogpile in Iberia.. They made peace and obtained some land.
The end of the league war was the cue to sail BACK to Portugal.
General Klinkwan started sieging the capital of Portugal, after the Hungarian occupation of the league war had vanished..
Something tells me our opportunistic move would pay off
Haida asked for the ENTIRE Florida CN, and asked for ALL provinces from Caraibas CN except ONE.
That would make sure the troops INSIDE these Caribbean islands wouldn't turn into rebels..
The land we take is FAR away from other Christian nations in Europe, hence they don't care so much.
Important tip: you can ask ANY province from a colonial nation, even without occupations of capitals/forts there, IF you occupied the colonizer capital. Either that, or sieging up the fort in Florida enabled me to ask Caribbean without having an accoupied fort there.
Also, asking for colonies will cost LESS warscore for the development you take. As European it usually isn't worth it to ask colonies directly, but it is VERY good move for American natives, as the trade node of the Caribbean is the gateway of the trade from America into Europe..
Haida owns the ENTIRE Caribbean now, worth HUNDREDS of development..
And the captured Caribbean provinces allowed us to adopt the printing press institution
King De Valois of France got informed of the result of the first sunset invasion of the Haida..
And rose his eyebrows.
"Henceforth.. I believe in the power of American natives!"
A Haida minstrel wrote a poem on the matter..
Untamed people in an untouched land
With pride in their culture and pride in their clan
Didn't take long before the world got around
First come first serve just take what you found
They fought for their world and they paid with their lives
Stood proud until the end in the face of all those lies
The eagle flies across a blood red sky
Remind you of the past and brings tears to your eyes
Its kind of funny, but the text from this nineties song has other meaning.. "paid with their lives" applies to the colonizers, and "remind you of the past and bring tears to your eyes" might be read as tears of proudness..
