Chapter LIV: The Triumph and the Tragedy
September 1-10, 1916
War memorial in the Rhineland
As September begins, the enemy can no longer muster large forces at all - or so we thought. Massed in Karelia is the hugest Russian army we have seen in this war so far. Is this a desperate attempt by Grand Duke Nicholai to retake the lost capital of St Petersburg (the Germans gently refused to let the MRUP do its work)? We look on with apprehension as this gigantic Russian rabble sort of just sits around doing nothing.
Grand Duke Nicholai's gargantuan host
Apparently the Germans can hold of the dark Bolshevik masses for now. It is time, surely, to behold the awesomeness of the current strategic situation. All those who mourned the Batman's capture (and this includes me - happily I was mistaken) will rejoice in the knowledge that the Dark Knight has eluded the armies of the Ottoman Empire. How does he do it, you ask? Having a
British butler might help.
The situation in early September
The situation looks somewhat threatening to the Ottomans in the Near East. Will the Central Powers be saved from being engulfed by Bolshevism at the eleventh hour? The emperor ponders sadly how the foul Socialist International may abuse the glorious red in our Imperial flags when earth-shattering news arrive from Berlin. The nature of this news causes us to even forgive the messenger's arrival in an in-the-air ship. (The ship, of course, is burnt.)
Russia surrenders
Huzzah! We at once order one hundred masses to be offered for each day the war against Russia has lasted. Our glorious troops have marched from Ruthenia to the Volga, from Montenegro to the Caucasus to defeat the Bolshevik menace. They have hewn down the rabid slaves of communism like the mad dogs they are. They have endured hardship and cold, all for the sake of polyethnic dualism, mysticism and tyranny. Huzzah! Long live the emperor! Whilst we still plan a grand victory parade, we hear slightly odd news, once more from Imperial Germany.
Germany won't annex Poland
What? They want no non-Germans? From enlightened Vienna, we find that slightly silly. Have they not struggled alongside us for multinationalism? Then why do they refuse to include the Poles in the German Empire? Won't the Poles feel snubbed by this? How racist! We send a note of protest to Berlin at this unfortunate decision. 'The very notion of nation-states', we claim, 'is today the grossest anachronism. In the nineteenth century, mankind languished in ignorance, for it failed to see the glory of polyethnic dualism; today we are wiser. It seems, then, the most stubborn obscurantism to refuse other nationalities.' We also find the German attitude slightly hypocritical since they already have lots of Poles, Frenchmen, Belgians, and so on.
In the meantime, it is obvious that since Russia tearfully abjured the horrid doctrines of Marxism and cast the foul heretical treatises into the cleansing fires the remainder of the international Bolshevik-Plutocrat alliance is despairing. Albion, once proud and conceited, has also at last seen that there is no hope in the world for backward conspiracies. Placing themselves at the two emperors' knees and begging kind forgiveness for their many transgressions, the British have sent plenipotentiaries to Berlin.
England surrenders
Huzzah! While the foul English pig-dogs have capitulated, a revolting thing has happened in the Caucasus. The Baku Commune has formed and has revolted against Azerbaijan! What's more, no-one's doing anything about it! Whilst the emperor threatens to hyperventilate, cartographers throughout the empire celebrate this day, for the peace treaties breathe new life into their craft ailing from international stability. Huzzah! they cry and draw us a new map of Europe.
The new world order
Eastern Europe now looks like this. German puppets' names are marked in black.
Mitteleuropa
Notice please that Britain still owns western Belgium. Their rule is now secured by international treaties. Despite the cartographers' jubilations, policy-makers are a little underwhelmed. Ukraine, which was conquered with the blood of Austrian soldiers, is now a puppet of Imperial Germany. We do not approve. It seems as if Germany got everything out of this war, whilst we got, well, pretty much nothing. There now is a seed of resentment against the German Empire in Austria-Hungary. Will it blossom?
Anyway, this is finally the end of the Great War. It is not, however, by any means the end of this AAR. There are greater conflicts to be fought.
