1914 AARS... mhm, gonna follow this.

Question, how come Germany has Thorn(Torun) in the beginning? You modded that yourself?

+++ for the difficultyness.
Yeah, I just couldn't stand the aesthetics of it otherwise... it worked out, though, since the German AI seems unwilling to exploit the situation :D

I read your Deutsches Reich AAR with avid interest, by the way, that was awesome :)

Don't say you're getting kickassed by little Montenegro

Montenagro ...
In defence of Montenegro, let me quote W.L. Langer, European Alliances and Allignments 1871-1890, 2nd edition (New York, 1950):
There was no real difference between the inhabitants of Montenegro and those of the adjacent districts of Herzegovina. They were all tribesmen, wild mountaineers who were constantly fighting each other if they were not fighting the Turk. A contemporary observer notes that only those who died in their beds were mourned for. To do battle was a pastime, and to die in battle was an honour, for aiding the Herzegovinians against the Turks was regarded "partly as a sport and partly as a crusade."
I maintain that there is no shame in fleeing from people who mourn only those who die in bed and regard battle as a fun pastime :D

Lord Finnish: It hasn't collapsed yet, unfortunately. Russia is more powerful than Austria, so as long as the Germans aren't helping I'm likely to continue being forced on the defensive.

Enewald: Ah, yes, it might be trouble, especially since I have no reserves behind the front :eek:o

Capibara: If I retake Stryj, I have my shortest possible front, which I should be able to hold without German help. But of course I can't really win by attrition...

Jushu: I shall do my utmost :)

GoforitPanzer: Ah, yes, apparently. Curse the AI's accidental genius! The Germans are still holding, no change, other than Russia having seized Memel, which really isn't the end of the world.

I've already replied to Hannibal Barca2 and Gigalocus in an earlier post.

Nice update!

No matter what you say it is very disgraceful for a nation of your size and power to be defeated in battle by a nation as powerful and sizely as Montenegro. You really have to avenge this defeat, in a smashing style I must say...

Other than that, things look shakey on the Eastern Front, hopefully once you get the Balkans cleared out you can move those troops against Russia.

This one's worth a visit, if only for the title! :D

Good luck! It's an interesting scenario.

Chapter VI: The Keys of Central Europe
August 23 - September 8, 1914

Vienna is filled with rumours. Will the Russian breakthrough in Galicia be contained? Will Germany send help? What about the war being over by Christmas? In response to the military situation, the High Command in the east immediately orders a desperate counter-attack to force the Russians back.

Counter-attack against Stryj (sorry about the quality)

Glorious victory! It remains to be seen whether our eastern armies, shattered as they are, can actually hold the retaken position. The next few weeks turn into a ferocious battle going back and forth, as newly arrived troops are immediately dislodged by enemy counter-attacks.

Each time I attack Stryj, I win, but I can never hold it for long. The essential problem is that my troops have to fight so hard and march so far that, when they arrive in Stryj victorious, they're depleted and exhausted and easily defeated by counter-attacks. The fact that retreating units from Stryj withdraw to distant Bacau rather than nearby Presov isn't helping... there is no conclusion to this series of battles in sight!

My answer to this conundrum is to push in Serbia, crush the South Slav kingdoms and transfer those (hopefully) fresh troops to the east to gain the numerical advantage.

Glorious victories abound in the Balkans

The offensive in Serbia continues apace. Soon the Servians shall serve us! Counter-attacks of this nature are annoying, but ultimately they cannot halt my debatable, I mean unbeatable, hosts.

dcehpc.jpg

Insignificant, doomed-to-failure Serbian 'counter-attacks'

Pfft. Such 'victories' are powerless to stop polyethnic dualism. In fact, and at this rejoice, all happy Austro-Hungarian subjects, blessed with multinationalism! - in fact, I am now taking my vengeance upon Montenegro and crushing them mercilessly beneath the not-quite-autocratic-but-not-really-democratic-either jackboot.

xbhc7o.jpg

The end of Montenegro?

However, something a little surprising, unsettling, and not a little embarrassing happened at sea. I'm in fact at a loss to explain this:

2hf27o6.jpg

And then there were none

Note the list of sunk ships is very incomplete - they actually sank my entire navy (except for a few antique cruisers in port). This is quite possibly the most astonishing, disgraceful, and crushing naval defeat I have ever suffered. Out of nowhere appeared the Imperial Japanese Navy and sent my brave k.u.k. fleet - all of it, including my fourteen battleships - to the bottom of the Adriatic. Farewell, you fine ships. Sniff.

In the next update: What will all those brave sailors do now? Can Austria-Hungary defeat the savage tribesmen of the Balkans? Will the line in the east hold, er, become, firm?

Ouch! A decisive naval defeat by Japan. You'd think they'd have better things to do than travel half way around the world to fight the Austrian navy. Anyway, I love Austrian AARs so I'm wishing you luck. Conquer the Balkans and crush the Russians once and for all!

Damn, this are not going well.

On the bright side, a terrific AAR. Especially the 300 quotes, in case you haven't noticed from OT, I'm the biggest 300 fan from Paradox, and if anyone cares to challenge that, then DUEL!

Anyway, use your superior fighting skills! Remember, they have many slaves, but few warriors!

EDIT: Could you please direct me as to where to get this MOD/Scenario? Thanks

Holy shit, what a battle! At least you took a fair part of their fleet down with you though.....

I'm at a loss for words though, that really blows.

At least you are crushing Serbia.

Well, the Japanese fleet didn't escape unscratched either. They lost a lot of escorts and fe BBs as well.

Naval defeats can't stop the mighty Austro-Hungarian war machine! Onwards to victory!

Enewald: Yes, this is tragic, I was planning on a grand naval campaign against the Italians... but it wasn't meant to be.

VILenin: Apparently to Japan the real danger that must be taken out first (to quote the 'Britain First' AAR) is Austria-Hungary. Odd

Elidioemperor: I'm also quite a fan of '300'. Sadly, however, I pretty much have many slaves, but few warriors. Austria-Hungary is Spartan in only one respect: it has decided to 'leave democracy to the Athenians, boy'. (Unsurprisingly that quote from the comic-book wasn't included in the film :D ). You can download the 1914 mod here.

Maj. von Mauser: Yes, that's very comforting, actually. I shall have my vengeance!

Winner: Exactly! None shall escape as the thousand nations of the Habsburg Empire descend upon them!

Chapter VII: Resistance is Futile
September 9-28, 1914

Field Marshal Radomir Putnik, grizzled veteran of many Balkan wars, continues to bedevil my attempts to crush Serbia with another sally against Nis.

29pxlkl.jpg

Serbian counter-attack

The Serbian super-soldiers gain the victory, but surely our bitterest Balkan foe is in his death throes. We have many slaves, but few soldiers - eventually we'll zerg them into oblivion. Meanwhile, it's nothing but the usual on the eastern front.

9zn8ut.jpg

Battles in Galicia

You win some and you lose some. Meanwhile Putnik's brave counter-attack on Nis has ended with some Serbian divisions being encircled and crushed at Nis, and our advance into Cetinje continues despite fierce Montenegrin resistance.

2h7ihao.jpg

Battles in South Slavia

Cetinje is occupied soon after. Revenge at last for the shameful defeat at Ragusa! Sadly, still-Montenegrin Ragusa has a victory point in it. Time to encircle and crush those foul tribal mountaineers!

2805wfb.jpg

The Battle of Ragusa

While the shattered Montenegrin army is surrendering, our final assault on the last Serbian bastions of Stip and Skopje begins. Little resistance is offered by the exhausted and outnumbered Serbs.

v5zjwy.jpg

The final attack on Serbia

In the meantime our troops have occupied Ragusa. Montenegro is no more. General Rohr von Denta, mastermind of the Balkan campaign, sends a message to the last Montenegrin soldiers refusing capitulation:

'Strength is irrelevant. Resistance is futile. We wish to improve ourselves. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service ours.'

The annexation of Montenegro

Montenegro is down, yay!

Now take the serbs and then bring more troops to the russian front, or has italy attacked yet

And how is western front?

Avenged!!

With Montenegro down, the stain on the honour of the Hapsburgs as no more.

Now deal with those pesterable Serbian attacks and be done with the Balkans!

Done and done. Now lets teach those Rusmen whats what.

Enewald: Italy doesn't get the event for joining the Entente until mid-1915... and they'll regret it when they do, for none defy Austria-Hungary and live to tell the tale :D I'll post pictures of the western front in my next update.

Maj. von Mauser: I will, I assure you. It's true, the stain is wiped away. No longer shall the southern Slavs disturb Austro-Hungarian serenity!

germanpeon: Yes... let's.
