Chapter XLII: How the West Was Won
January 23-30, 1916
'Hooray German eagle! / England's unicorn flies first, / Behind it, the lousy Russian bear / And France's impudent rooster / Chased through lands and sea / By the bold German eagle / That ever protects us!'
The Imperial German army, side by side with their faithful Austrian friends, has been pushing the foul French back. Hindenburg and Ludendorff, along with William II in all his fatherly kindness and gentleness, have plotted and schemed for years and, at last, the French are caught inexorably in a web of German conspiracies. Austrian support has proved vital in the capture of the fortress of Belfort, blah, blah, more propaganda. Anyway, the French have apparently decided the game is up.
Victory!
The pig-dogs have given up! Germany seizes eastern Belgium and Luxemburg, core Belgium becomes a German puppet, Germany seizes France's colonies in Equatorial Africa, and the Chinese regain some of their land, too. The only one to get nothing is, once more, Austria-Hungary. 'Be of good cheer, sirs', the Emperor has told some angry people (his ministers), 'for, as has been proved many times, Germany is secretly at work in the world.
'How can we account for our present situation unless we believe that men high in the Imperial German government are concerting to deliver us to great splendour and glory? This must be the product of a great conspiracy on a scale so immense as to dwarf any previous such venture in the history of man. A conspiracy of benevolence so selfless that, which it is finally exposed, its principals shall be forever deserving of the praises of all honest men.…What can be made of this unbroken series of decisions and acts contributing to the strategy of triumph? They cannot be attributed to incompetence.…The laws of probability would dictate that part of…[the] decisions would hurt the country’s interest.'*
All fears are dispelled at once at these kind and wise words, and workman, soldier and journalist alike return to their labour, safe in the knowledge of future glory. Speaking of the soldiers' labour: having proved themselves in battle once again, our brave warriors use the newly-gained right of passage through French territory to march east. In the meantime, there is more utterly ingenious diplomacy from the Germans, who get themselves another slice of Lorraine.
The Treaty of Frankfurt
The Germans before Reims
Whilst the Russians continue suffering through Hötzendorf's unparalleled mastery of inactivity, the French have been forced to give the Germans the rest of Lorraine arround the fortress of Verdun.** This gives Germany an even stronger defensive position as well as securing her iron supply. Belgium, of course, sort of just sits there and suffers quietly.
Of course there are huge celebrations in Berlin and Vienna. All honest men praise the two emperors' wisdom and skill at arms that has led their armies to victory over the red menace and Bolshevik scum. It is time, then! to turn to Russia and face that Great Satan of the East, the Wicked Wizard of the Wastes, His Infernality Nicholas Ilyich the Second International!***
The new situation in the west
*I'm paraphrasing Senator McCarthy (quoted in R. Hofstadter's great essay 'The Paranoid Style in American Politics').
**In new versions of the 1914 mod, Metz might be renamed to Verdun.
***I apologise. This is meant to be satire.
