Chapter V: The Cauldron of War
August 8-23, 1914
The progress of the German war effort, a week in:
The German fronts, west and east
The Prussians advance in the west with pleasing celerity, while they're holding in the east. Well done for obeying my strategy, my minions! (Not really - the minion part, that is.) Meanwhile, rather worryingly, my offensive defence in the east, von Manstein style, is running into trouble.
Russian counter-attacks
Not only in the east do things start looking a little grim. In the south, our initial offensives are also being reversed.
An ignominious forced retreat from the Montenegrins! We are forced to abandon Ragusa! Ah, the shame! Habsburg efforts to crush those rebellious knaves and villains must be redoubled!
I should re-state my case. The war in the east is *really* not going well.
Horrible defeats!
Uh-oh. In the meantime, the Russians have also defeated me in Stanislawow. And guess where my troops from Stanislawow are retreating to?
Yep. Who knew? This is probably a Bad Thing. Nor are the Bolshevik Schweinehunde, er, imperial Russian troops, stopping there. Their perfidious plans involve more treacherous infiltration of my glorious lands!
I need not point out why this is a bit of a problem. Not only have I just lost nine crucial divisions in the east, but the Russians have achieved a breakthrough in a key province. From here they can push into Transylvania and the Great Hungarian Plain. And that might cause some difficulties. Stryj is the key to Galicia, and Galicia is the key to Austria-Hungary; it must be retaken!
