I've noticed in the current patch of the game that certain strategic resources tend to cluster in the same parts of the galaxy.

So, if your opponent is on the opposite side of the galaxy, there's a good chance they lack some of the basics.

Note that since you can't tell who has what strategic resources at a glance, this is less satisfying than it should be. I'd also like to know who currently has what.

There was some Russian dude that made a suggestions thread detailing some 30 changes to the UI that are necessary. I'd still be playing the game now instead of lurking this forum while waiting for the next update if PDX just gave the player more control and more information. It's hard to do and requires A LOT of thought. But it's one of the most important things. The diplomacy screen should show A LOT more information about empires, not just what strategic resources they have either. Perhaps this will tie into espionage in future updates, but it is lacklustre atm.
