"Gypsy" is just like the word "Indian" it stems from a geographic error (Europeans thinking they're from Egypt, so "Gypsies" became the name for them, just like "Indian" stems from Columbus thinking he was in India) and whether it is offensive or not depends on who you talk to. Some Romani think Gypsy is alright and others even positively identify as such, just like some Native Americans think Indian is alright and some even positively identify as such. And there are even some that think "Romani" and "Native American" are also offensive, it's hard to rigidly define these things.
I for one think this argument over semantic is pointless, especially since comments about Romani being thieves and vagabonds are
definitely stereotypical and mean-spirited and are mostly being ignored.
We just need to figure out what the Byzantines called them so they can have them as mercenaries. Then when the empire gets below X number of provinces, they will flee the empire, and Christian countries borders the Byzantines then get an event about "People from the East have fled the decaying Byzantine Empire, the locals are referring to this nomads as "gypsies" what should we do?" And you get a simple "Welcome them" or "Drive them out" options with the appropriate effects, like accepting them could hurt relations with bishops in your country or something, and the other one could give a small risk of a Romani revolt.
Would be great for historical flavor.
I realize the actual story is out of time frame but I now have this desire for an event chain where you adopt a hunchback and fall in love with a gypsy and end up thrown off the local bisophric.
CK II already has a St. Joan of Arc inspired event and that was during the 100 years war, I would love an event chain inspired by the Hunchback of Notre Dam.
Anyways since you guys hate wikipedia, just sit down and listen to an hour long talk if that's your fancy
