I have been building this city and I can't think of a good name. What do you guys think, any suggestions? But let me take you on a tour of my city first so you can get some fitting names.
So I like to build in a dense grid as you can see above. So I always lay my streets out in a grid. You will notice the parks laid out in a row. I made two street grids that overlap. One is tram tracks and bike paths. They wrap around the park on either side and are zoned. Then there is the big street grid for cars. This creates a pedestrian and transit only superblock as pictured below. Works very nicely handling traffic and makes a nice hangout spot for locals.
As you can see above the traffic is light due to the well laid out network of roads, tramways, and bike paths. But that's not the only way to get around, there is a highway, it's just really compact, and floats over the street grid never getting in anyone's way.
and yes, from street level they look like parks. And again, the street grid is unbroken as it just slips under the elevated expressway.
There is only one freeway interchange in the city and it is messy. But even here the surface street grid spawls under this mess in a park like setting. This thing took me hours to build and many mistakes. But the traffic now flows through with no jam ups. And the streets below it are alive and active with locals, bikers, and other normal street level pedestrians. It's like the interchange above isn't even there. It's ugly, but it works in a small footprint. Below is a wider shot of the interchange.
Moving down the highway the port is really busy, It is the one place in the city where the traffic jams up. This is a problem I still have not fixed, trying a few different things but I still haven't got it. You can see the problem below.
Below is a wider view of the same area.
Below is a view of my industrial area across the river from the port. It's kept some distance from residential, but a good transit system makes it easy to access.
The jail is also over here. We tried to build it in a residential area but the NIMBY's wouldn't have it.
The Airport is on an island at the edge of the city. The perfect street grids slides right in next to it. It was a prefect fit, like it was designed just for this city.
Is that a dam in the middle of the street grid? Surely my perfect grid will be broken here! As you see below, the street grid makes little work of the fast moving river. You can see the dam from another angle below.
It even ignores the coast line as you can see below, simply holding its perfect form against the environment.
In the image below we see the other side of the river with a new upscale neighborhood. It's being built up on a hill overlooking the rest of the city with great views. Just got to wait for the people to move in and build their towering condos. I'll update you guys when this fills in. Remember also that it is connected to the rest of the unbroken street grid, meaning great access with fast transit and bike paths.
Below is my next protect. The downtown government and entertainment district. This will feature all government buildings, dense commercial, museums, nightclubs, casinos, recreational use, and a theme park, sports stadiums, and convention center on the riverside. Even here the street grid will be unbroken as I put all the bigger assets on the river. It's gonna look neat I think when it's all done. I'll keep you updated.
So what do you guys think? Any ideas for a name?
