This is great do we get to hear of any other characters, maybe from other countries?

I'm currently playing as France and its fun in colony building but Prussia seems to keep going to war with me and i dont know why (evil Prussians!)

And i'm allied with sweeden and britain, also trying to influence russia. But like in this sweeden either declears war on russia (and wins..weird) or russia declears war on sweeden, but still loses as france, britain. austria and sweeden attck her and then the ottomans join in, so she is always losing land.

Yeah. I'll incorporate other countries too. As you can see, I've focused mainly on Russia so far. That changes very quickly, though.

BTW, sorry for the lack of an update. I had to leave town because my brother had surgery and I have to get checked for the same condition tomorrow. Everything went fine, but I didn't bring my notes because I was in a hurry to get here. Updates ASAP. (tomorrow)

Chapter 11
September 22, 1859

September 22, 1859:
Torben raised his gun, slowly aiming at the geese as they arced across the sky. The air was cold and the days were getting shorter. The sun had better start to warm us soon, he thought. As emperor of Austria, he was no used to such weather. How in the world does Sara do it? She must actually be starting to love this Joshua. A sense of duty will only take you so far, after all. Well, unless you're Prussian. I'm going to have to decide what in the world to do about them soon. They're trying to take control of all of Germany and these damned revolts --

CRACK! His rifled fired, breaking the silence of the night. As the majestic bird fell helplessly to the ground, the hounds ran off into the distance to recover the emperor's fallen prey followed closely by the emperor's servants.

"Wonderful shot!" Joshua nearly yelled.

"Why thank you your majesty," Torben smiled and nodded his head slightly to the right in a mock bow.

Joshua grabbed the front of his jacket, pulling it tighter around him.

"And how are things with you and the empress?" Toben inquired.

"Quite well, actually. No grandchildren yet." Torben smiled knowngly. "Hopefully soon, though," Joshua continued. "You know, she didn't talk to me for several weeks after this business with the Italians started."

"I know," Torben replied, "she told me."

Joshua sighed. "That was horrible. I didn't want to declare war on Austria, I hope you know that. It was just this alliance --"

"I know, you don't need to say anymore. Regardless, we are at peace now. Well, you are at peace at any rate. I still have to deal with those damned Sardinians. I don't know what I'd have done if France had -- anyway, it's not like to sent any Swedes into Austria. If you had!"

The emperors chuckled at each other. Behind each of their laughs was a nervousness, though. Both were afraid of what would have happened to their empires should they be forced to war with one another.

"Well, the reports I receive from the front tell me that Austria is doing quite well."

"True. If France keeps their nose out of this, we will win a mighty victory. The question is, can we afford another victory."

"Your majesty?"

Austria at the end of the war. I know it's in the future, but I won't cover it in an update, so I'll just show you how they fared:
AustriaItaly.jpg

Torben stared off towards the dogs for a brief moment. They were returning now, the lifeless body of the poor bird hanging from one of the dog's mouth.

"I hear you granted your people a constitution, Joshua."

"This is true." Joshua replied flatly, squinting for just a moment.

"Out of curiosity, why? Your people love you from what I hear. You've had, what, two riots in your entire time as emperor? Why would you take such a big step without pressure?"

"To save myself."

"What do you mean?" Torben fidgeted in his seat, the leather creaking beneath him. It was a strange sight, this old man looking to a younger emperor for advice.

"Well, I've seen the revolts in the German nations. I've seen the revolts in Russia. I've seen the revolts in Austria." Joshua glanced at the emperor to make sure no insult was taken. "We've had wars, it's true. But most of them have been like our war with your great empire. They were quasi-wars. No offensive measures were taken and, as a result, no defensive measures were needed. The people have never had to experience rationing. They've never experienced thousands of their loved ones dying in some far off nation. They've never experienced real pain. Even our war with Russia was a short one. And, further, most of the fighting was done with Russian troops from our Baltic states! My people would no more care about a few thousand dead Russians than a Brit would care about a few thousand dead Indians. There are plenty more where they came from, after all. So, as I said, it was merely to protect myself, not that they know that of course. And who cares if they do?"

Torben appeared deep in through, his horse restless beneath him. As the dogs finally returned to their master, he stepped backwards nervously before being steadied by the emperor.

"By the way," Joshua tried to take the emperor's mind off of war and riots, "did you hear that I purchased Vindava and Reval from Russia?"

Chapter 12
August 24, 1862 - October 22, 1862

August 24, 1862:
"They refused?" Joshua asked, amazed.

"Yes, your majesty. Apparently word leaked out about your . . ." Charles proceeded cautiously "your ambitions. When they heard about that, they assumed that a defensive pact with us was your way of trying to bring them into your Scandanavian Empire."

He could tell that the emperor was mad, though not at him. What did he expect? That Denmark would merely give up its sovereignty willingly? Imagine if Russia had asked Joshua to give up his sovereinty to unite all of Scandanavia? He would have gone berzerk. Or what if the Danes had asked him? How is this any different?

"We need a united Scandanavia, Charles!"

"Why, your majesty?"

"What do you mean why? It's in the best interests of the Scandanavian people! He need a united front. Hell, I'd united all of the Teutonic peoples if I could." Joshua paused for a moment as if something had just occured to him. "But, no. That's impossible. Imagine the riots in Germany. Or England! And technically we'd have to take the United States too. There may be a ton of Irish over there, but there are even more English and Germans. Hmm . . . a Teutonic nation."

"Sire?"

Joshua snapped out of his daze.

"What would you have me do, sire?"

"Nothing right now Charles. You may go."

"Thank you."

"Oh, and Charles? Send Bennear to find me."

Bennear? That could only mean one thing! Certainly not, though. After all of his obsession with avoiding war, certainly Joshua wasn't about to change over one little setback. After all, Sweden has wonderful relations with the Danes and, barring this little incident, we've gotten along very well. Certainly the emperor wasn't contemplating war. They must just need to discuss what technologies to research next. Yes, that's it . . .

September 20, 1862:
Copenhagen, Denmark
Frederik VII looked at the piece of paper in his hands. Certainly this couln't be happening. Could it be possible that he was going to have to face another war on his watch? They had already been humiliated by the Prussians, losing almost half their country in Flensburg, Ribe, and Viiborg. Think of all of the young Danes that had died because he tried to incorporate Schleswig into his tiny empire. Would he lose everything now because he had refused an alliance with Sweden? How would history see him? Even more important than that, how would he defend his nation now? His army had been decimated in the last war and he hadn't had the money to rebuild it. If the Swedes were serious about this, then there was --

"Your majesty!" and aide rushed into the room, disrupting Frederik's thoughts, not that they were amounting to much anyway.

The king looked up, not saying a word. His face said everything anyone would ever need to know.

"There are reports of an invasion in Aalborg! Are we at war? What should I do?"

The king's shoulders dropped. As he rose from his throne to walk to the window, the piece of paper fell out of his hands, catching the aide's eye for the first time. The king moved silently towards the window, as the young aide bent down to read what was written. It stated simply:
"A state of war exists between Sweden and Denmark."

The Swedish invasion of Denmark (you can see, I took a big prestige hit):
ScreenSave5.jpg

October 22, 1862:
Riga, Joshua's Winter Palace

"Your majesty, our expeditionary force in Denmark is about half way to Aarhus. We should be there within a month."

"Wonderful. And I trust everyone is well supplied?"

"Of course, your majesty. Our supply lines haven't even been threatened by the Danes. Their navy is still in Copenhagen. And even if they did attempt some sort of breakout, our navy is strong enough that we could stop them. I have absolutely no worries."

'What about revolts, though? What are we going to do if an occupied territory should revolt?"

"That's easy, your majesty. We'll just dispatch one division back north to take care of them. There's really nothing to worry --"

"SIRE!" Charles busted into the room once more. He really is annoying, Bennear thought. Why does the emperor keep him around?

"Frederik is asking for peace!"

"Already? What is he offereing?" Joshua was amazed. They hadn't been at war that long and he only occupied one province. Even if he did occupy all of Denmark, he'd still have to get Greenland, Iceland, the Virgin Islands . . . there was a lot to do!

"They're offering Aalborg and Aarhus!"

Joshua looked at Bennear. "What do you think?"

"Well, sire, if you're really worried about revolts, peace may be the best option. It will give us time to improve the infrastructure and build defensive walls. Or, at the very least, given enough time, the militancy of the inhabitants will decrease. They'll come to see that Sweden really is the best opportunity for them."

"Good point."

"And," Bennear added, "we could always use some more soldiers. Swedes wouldn't be too upest if a few Danes died."

Joshua smiled. Bennear was exactly right. "Send word to Denmark that we accept the king's offer. Then, as soon as we're in control of the provinces, begin immediate work to upgrade the infrastructure."

"Of course, your majesty."

"And Charles?"

"Yes?"

"How is the luxury furniture factory coming along in Latvia?"

"It's coming along just fine. It should be up and running by the end of May."

"Wonderful. We need that factory to get going. That's a lot of money that I could use. I want you to make absolutely sure that it is always stocked."

"Of course, sire." And with that, Charles turned to begin his journey back to Denmark. He he was leaving the room, though, he could swear he heard Joshua to begin plans for another invasion.

Special note: VIP has limits on when and where nations can colonize. That should explain the lack of colonization for those of you who were wondering.

Chapter 13
October 28, 1867 - July 13, 1869

October 28, 1867:
Almost everything was going well for Sweden. The economy was growing, the rails were running well (as of today all of them were modernized), the people were happy, Joshua had recently increased the crime fighting budget again so crime was decreasing . . . so what was the problem? The problem was Joshua. He was fixated on two things: the luxury factory in Latvia and gaining colonies for Sweden. There just wasn't enough tropical wood on the market for Sweden to buy. When they could, though, the factory was making $30 a day! $30 a day! Think of what Sweden could do with that money. And the colonies? Well, that was just an undertaking to gain prestige and show the world Sweden's true status. It might be looked upon as silly by some people, but it was certainly important to Joshua.

How on earth could Joshua solve these problems? Sweden didn't have the ability to begin new colonies yet. They just weren't there technologically or socially. Besides, France and England wouldn't look too kindly upon another colonial rival in Africa. It wasn't worth a war. But even then that wouldn't solve the problem of tropical wood for the factory. Most of that was in Asia. Worse still, it was in Indonesia. Everything over there either needed to be colonized or was owned by Netherlands. That was certainly a war Joshua didn't want to begin. The European provinces would be easy enough to take, but the jungles and mountains of Indonesia would be hell on his troops. And the people more than likely wouldn't stand for it. Colonialism was a new idea for them. It had never been possible before. He just wasn't sure if he could convince the Swedish people to follow him on a war of colonialism for goods and services that would mainly benefit Latvia. But if he could just get that first colony. If he could just give the people a taste of it . . .

Suddenly it came to him! He knew exactly where he could get tropical wood, though it wasn't much, obtain a colony, and avoid any colonial wars with France and England! It was so simple once he finally thought of it. Why hadn't he thought of it before? He had to go find Bennear immediately.

Sweden's modern rail system:
ScreenSave7.jpg

October 19, 1868:
Admiral Ford surveyed the beach before him. He had studied his maps for endless hours on the trip around Africa. This seemed to be the best invasion point. It was low and there were few fortifications. The other parts of the island were either cliffs or had mountains rising quickly behind the beaches. That was unacceptable. No, this was where the invasion would take place.

The emperor was serious about this. After all of his years of trying to keep his Swedish troops out of trouble, he had sent every Swedish soldier he had on this expedition. What's more, he sent the entire Swedish navy to protect them. If he pulled this off, he would most certainly be in the emperor's good graces. He would be on easy street. The emperor had awarded his generals and admirals land in Finland after the Crimean War. Unfortunately, he was too young for that. This was his chance, though. Finland? Maybe. Latvia, though! That was supposed to be beautiful year 'round. Of course, he had never been there himself. He may not like it. But if he did, man, that would be nice. ENOUGH! Time to concentrate. It would certainly be wonderful if, no, when, his mission was successful, but if he failed . . .

No need to worry about that. It wasn't going to happen. What was going to happen now, though, was that Ford was going to give the order to prepare for invasion. Madagascar would soon become Sweden's first overseas colony.

After capturing Menabe, Swedish troops head for Bulina:
ScreenSave9.jpg

After some fierce fighting, technology won out over pure numbers:
ScreenSave10.jpg

After capturing Madagascar's last free province (and the one with tropical wood), troops head west to mop up a rebellion. Note the log at the bottom of the screen. The increased crime fighting budget is paying off. Corruption is purged in Orebro. And if you look at my money, it's still increasing. $20,000 in less than a year:
ScreenSave11.jpg

July 13, 1869:
Ford stood at the bow of his flagship, the salty wind blowing through his hair. The spray from the ocean moistening his face periodically. After months on land the gentle rocking comforted him. It was strange how you could miss something like that.

The Madagascan ship approached the boat to sign the formal treaty of annexation. As he noticed this, Ford placed his hat back on his head and straightened anything that was amok on his uniform. Just because he was dealing with savages was no reason to look like one.

Once again the thoughts of all of his possible rewards raced through his mind. His mother will be so proud to see his name in the paper. She may be illiterate but she could recognize her own son's name. And as for the emperor . . . well, certainly there will be a parade when he returns to Stockholm. After all, this is outright annexation. This isn't like the British in India -- making conquered foes sattelites in an effort to keep them happy. No, this was outright annexation. Joshua was very clear about that.

I wonder, Ford thought, if Joshua is going to try and send all of those Russians here. We don't need them in our country, dammit. I can stand the Finns and even the Balts. But the Russians need to go. If we can send them down here, they're still making money for the emperor, but I won't have to look at th--

A humbled representative approached the admiral.

"I am here to sign you country's treaty of annexation admiral." His head hung low as he spoke the words that would certainly be painful for any European. He's a savage, though, Ford thought. Do they even have pride in their nation? Do they even know what a nation is? Do they--

"Right this way." Admiral Ford led the way with the African a few steps behind him.

And with a few strokes of a pen on a piece of paper, Madagascar ceased to exist.

Madagascar after annexation by Sweden:
ScreenSave12.jpg

A look at the makeup of Sweden. No troops in Denmark and no ships anywhere near? Hope they don't revolt! :p And what about the rebels in Russia? I wonder what going on there. :
