Chapter 48
May 30, 1896

May 30, 1896:
The area known as Germany has changed many times over the course of the centuries. After its conquest by Charlemagne, their land was incorporated into the Frankish empire and, at the end of the 9th Century, became the first duchy of Saxony. Along with Westphalia, Angria, Eastphalia and Holstein, Saxony originally occupied all of the territory between the Elbe and the Saale River on the east and the Rhine on the west. Franconia and Thuringia formed its southern borders.

Duke Henry I of Saxony was elected German king in 919 followed by his son, Emperor Otto I. In his graciousness, Otto bestowed the duchy of Saxony on Herman Billung, a native Saxon whose descendants would sit on the throne until the death of the last male heir in 1106. By 1142, though, Henry the Lion held the duchy and his struggle with Emperor Frederick I would end tragically for the Saxons – all of Henry’s fiefs were lost in 1180. The disintegration of Saxony had begun.

The rivalry between Saxony and Prussia, called Brandenburg before 1701, would prove to be the duchy’s undoing, though. Temporarily ruling over Polish lands, Saxony began a policy that would become familiar to it – changing sides in the middle of a conflict. Though the period of Saxon rule in Poland was an economic crisis, it marked an upturn in Saxony’s cultural and artistic contributions to the world. Augustus II and Augustus III spent every extra pfenning on art and learning.

Perhaps the most fateful of Saxony’s decisions, though, came during the Napoleonic Wars. Though originally allied with Prussia, the Saxons abandonded their allies in 1806 in favor of Napoleon. For his treachery, the former Saxon duke became King Frederick Augustus I. However, his failure to abandon France in favor of the allied armies would cost him dearly. Nearly half of Saxony would be awarded to the now-victorious-Prussians at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.

Now, it seemed, Saxony was fated for execution at the hands of the Swedish Empire.

My ancestors, who left Dresden for Colorado after unification, would have approved :)
That's cool... My ancestors left California and Texas for Colorado after unification of the USA. :D And only Vicky players will get that joke.

Hey Josh, u playin VIP or just vanilla? Coz when I played Greece myself, don't seem to pull anything off(perhaps I'm a bad vicky player)

Anyways, don't understand about what's the link between saxony and sweden, but wish understan it on your next update.

Josh, you did say that you didn't mod it, the german unification, so is there an event that enable the unification on the game at this time?(1896?)

I'm playing the Greece game with Vicky. I did something that inadvertantly gave me a big economic bonus so that helped a lot. :D

No, I didn't mod Prussia into Germany. The Franco-Prussian War event is good from 1871 - 1920, though. Even though Prussia lost against France earlier, when they win this war it's counted as a Franco-Prussian War victory.

In case you wondered, my Greek (Byzantine) game is coming along rather nicely. This isn't my whole empire either. :D

 Sorry guys. I had a nice, long update written and accidentally hit the back button on IE which, of course, erased the entire thing. (USE FIREFOX) I'm getting tired and have to get up early for a job interview in the morning so, unfortunately, I'll have to delay this update one more day. I'll get you a nice, long one, though.

Never accidentally deleting your AAR updates: Priceless.

:D

Think about it. I use Word which autosaves frequently.

Yeah, I usually do use Word. I have a saved file with my updates in it. I'm at my girlfriend's, though. I'm used to Firefox, though, where it doesn't mess up any time you change screens.

So long as you didn't lose anything but time, it's all good, eh?

Two things.... First, how'd that job interview go? Second, are you planning on turning your Greek game into an AAR as well?

Yeah. I didn't lose any pics and I still remember what I'm going to write about the story. It's all good I suppose.

First - the job interview went very well. I have a followup interview this afternoon or first thing in the morning.

Second - Yeah, I'm planning on turning my Greek game into an AAR. Where I've been kind of passive in this one, I'm extremly aggressive in my Greek one. (As you can see from the pic I posted.)
