Hello everyone,
Like many people here, I used to run Darkest Hour on Linux through wine, but I have to admit that it was sometimes a bit unstable. So now Valve has recently included a Wine fork, Proton into Steam which makes the whole running Darkest Hour on linux much easier. I will explain below what i did to make it work :
1. Install Steam from here : https://store.steampowered.com/about/
2. Follow this tutorial to activate steam play (make sure to activate steam play for all games) : https://itsfoss.com/steam-play/
3. Make sure that you use Proton 4.2-9 for Darkest Hour (you can modify it by right-clicking on the game, then go on properties and on the general tab, tick the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" box and select Proton 4.2-9). DO NOT USE 4.11-2 as it has a display problem that will make the game crash on startup.
4. Enjoy defending the Motherland from those pesky Germans.
If you have a problem with your game, try switching Proton versions.
