No, not that I am aware of. They use the name defined for them. IE all human portraits are "human" ETC.

That's exactly what I want - how would I go about doing that?

Now I am very confused by what you want What I said is how all species portraits work now so I am trying to figure out what you want to do differently.

You said that the human portrait is always called humans; the other portraits in the humanoid section don't have a preset name. How would I make it so that my custom portrait always has the same species name, even in randomly generated empires?

Now I get what you are saying, and what I was saying was completely wrong sorry. Whilst all the different portraits have "official" names in the localisation files, none can be given a static name. The only way to do that would be to make a pre-defined empire. Sorry that I can't be of more assistance.

Are there any guides to adding a new species group? It seems difficult, though I have the required files.
