I suggest a few more rules to the already existing ones. These are open for debate.

  1. The skyline needs to be either:
    • A generally, well-known city
    • A town of historic importance
    • A popular tourist destination
  2. The image of the skyline shall have a high-enough resolution.
  3. The image shall have one or more clues that help solving the skyline (for example notable architecture, monuments, riverside, city walls, etc)

I could live with that. But it would be sort of hard... What constitutes a well known city? If I put up, say Port Morseby, capital of Papua New Guinea, would that be considered well known enough? Capitals should be a given, even if they're well known or not.
Does a strange looking steeple on a church count as a clue? Do mountians in the background? And how big is high resolution? should we start at 2MP?

Any capital of a country counts as well known enough.
It's up the poster to decide what he counts as a clue. It's impossible to define it precisely and that is not the point really. A mountain chain or an odd-looking building might count as clues but it is situational. A famous square in a city could be another hint. For example, in my skyline of Siena I used an image which showed a part of the the Piazza del Campo, the central Medieval square of the city.

And how big is high resolution? should we start at 2MP?

Regarding resolution, I don't know what a good number is. In my opinion, the image needs to be large enough to spot details. On flickr, these type of images are usually in the "large" category. For me it is important that the image is not tiny because extra small images make it unncessarly harder to guess the skyline.

I'll let you know it is definitely America (U.S.A) and its style as a city is rather unique (less than 10 in the state it is in).

Sorry for challenge, just hoped some stubtlities could be gleaned.

All the best, and the 2 previous guesses weren't correct.

Okay, the United states. Still, it looks pretty dry; I think, maybe somewhere in the South West... Maybe California or Arizona or Nevada... It looks too calm to be a sea, and too green to be in the desert. So on a river or a lake. So there are only ten of them... sorry, thats all I can derive from that; I know not of anything but the larger cities of SW Amerika

Less than 10 in the state that it is in..., there are less than 10 of this city type in the state that it is, not in the whole USA

Edit: seeing that this is so hard from your exasperation, sorwy, i'll give a nice nice clue- its name derives from generic features in geology/ geography.

It could be easier than it seems, maybe we're lacking guesses. Still absolutely more difficult than the average skyline, though.

What seems to be the logo from Lowe's, along with the American flag, gave the country away. Vegetation makes me think of somewhere in California or Arizona. I first thought of somewhere around Palm Desert, but it doesn't look nearly as arid.

So, from the last clue, I'm guessing Canyon Lake to keep the game going.

@rakowozz I've never heard of Canyon Lake before. How did you find it?

Me neither. Had to Google it. Used Google Maps and browsed all over California to find a city near a lake that looked somewhat wealthy. Found this when googling Canyon Lake, California:

I'm fine with it. But allow deviations from point 1, if the visual clues are numerous enough that the number of potential places to check is small enough. Distinctive geography could be sufficient. (The smaller/less known the place, the more geographic clues are needed.)

Canyon Lake or is so generic looking, and searching through hundreds of lake towns in the US simply is not feasible. On the other hand, looking for medium-sized Scandinavian port towns is.

Ok I added your suggestion to my proposed rules. See below:

  1. The skyline needs to be either:
    • A generally, well-known city
    • A town of historic importance
    • A popular tourist destination
    • A small/medium-sized town in a distinctive geography
  2. The image of the skyline shall have a high-enough resolution.
  3. The image shall have one or more clues that help solving the skyline (for example notable architecture, monuments, riverside, city walls, etc)
  4. Post a clue after 12 hours without a guess.

Any more suggestions/objections? If no objections by tomorrow afternoon CEST then I kindly ask @TotalyMoo to add these changes to the rules in the OP.

Sorry that this was so hard, i didn't expect such a challenge and thus a further affriment of the rules. As i had said earlier, i felt my possible suggestions for what i was going to do before were going to be too easy.

But yes well done to @rakowozz, good luck to chosing a more appropiate skyline.

I wouldn't consider your photo to be inappropriate, per say. Only some Googling was indeed required.

But I agree with the rules proposed, though they're dependent on common sense (which we don't lack in these forums). What could be considered good enough as a clue to some isn't to others. Maybe a rule suggesting you need to give a clue after a certain amount of time has passed without any guesses could be useful!

I'll post a skyline in a few minutes!

I agree that common sense is required and these are more like guidelines.

Sounds good. Will add this to the suggested changes to the rules but the question is how much time shall pass before clues have to be given?

Maybe 12 hours or so? It's more or less what took between one guess and the other this time. I agree we need guidelines instead of strict, severe rules :p

I'm pretty uninspired right now, so this is an easy one I haven't seen here yet:

@rakowozz 12 hours sounds good to me, too. Below is an updated version:
