Alma-Ata or Almaty, Kazakhstan, I was there a couple of years ago. The hint gave it away though.
I'll have to pick somewhere harder next time then. I was expecting this to slowly carry on, at least until I woke up, slowly taunting you guys with new and obscure clues... Anyway, Almaty, the old capital of Kazakhstan, is correct.
The apple clue was a direct take on the cities name, as the city name itself derives from the Kazakh word for apple. It is said the greatest genetic variety of apples are in the Almaty region, most likely making it the home of apples. Normally the best image of the city is of the mountians behind the city, but that would be too easy...

Good guess, but no! Fun fact: I was in Odaiba (Tokyo) a couple of days ago though.
What a bizarre coincedence, perhaps it was the inspiration for you to do a skyline with such disinctive features that are similar to it .

A friend of mine is a missionary in Tanzania and she was on vacation on Zanzibar. Saw her fotos when she was back in germany last month. Thought this might be Zanzibar and asked her via Whatsapp. Lucky me
