Yup, they are Ki-44s.They can be somewhat tricky to identify depending on the picture.
Here is another one:

I am away from my books but I am sure I have seen that photo before. A6M5 had a different mount for the fuel tank so that would make it a A6M3??

Really fun with the air planes, but google image search kind of takes the skill out of it.![]()
F.9/37 yes?
Now I'm curious as to what you think it seems, as my initial thought - pretty much correctly as it turned out - was that it was a Reaper with different engines though I had to wiki to get the exact name though - and there the pic was at the top of the page. Of course, that's mainly cos I was looking up the Reaper a few weeks ago after reading an althist story where it entered service so had it's appearance stuck in my head
Now this is probably quite an easy one for those that know their aircraft (hell, I even left the nose art on there), but my god what a plane:

Yes the Gloster F9/37 again from British Fighters since 1912, Putnam aviation books, Manson
XP47J
I always liked the follow up, the XP-72

Yeah, the prototypes the Americans came up with towards the end of the war were remarkable planes. 500mph in level flight for a propeller driven fighter is ridiculous (although in the case of the 47J it wasn't just the propeller - the exhaust gave around 400lbs of jet thrust!). It's a pity aircraft like the Mustang in particular were "good enough", so even though things like the these were better, there wasn't a drive to actually put them into production, particularly with jets just around the corner.
