One of these things you can do, but likely never consider, is educating the children of your vassals, or even sending off your own successor to a different court. As a side note, it doesn't help that vassals are excluded from the list of potential guardians that pops up when you click the related alert. I think this action could and should be more meaningful. I'm not familiar with the subject in regards to history, but I think my suggestions are intuitive anyway.
Firstly, tutelage should be an opportunity for a child to establish connections. More specifically, I think wards should have a high probability of establishing friendships with either their guardian and/or their primary heir; the UI should make this clear as well. Friendships are good to have, especially those with powerful vassals, and we could do with more ways of actively fostering them for as long as the befriend scheme is locked behind a perk! Which reminds me that there is a lifestyle perk that makes it so the character may become friends with their wards: that should merely increase the odds instead.
Next, guardianship should act as a one-way non-aggression pact: you can't take any hostile action against the guardian of your child. In addition, there should be an option to take a vassal's child hostage when releasing them, turning them into your ward. Vice versa, a liege may see their child become a ward of whichever vassal led a successful rebellion. The child in question is whoever is closest in line to inheriting their parent's main title.
Lastly, wards should have a high chance of learning the language of their guardian, and may gain the equivalent of CK2's sympathy traits, halving the malus for having a different faith between the ward and characters of their guardian's faith.
I think these three suggestion will make guardianship a much bigger deal. Also, vassals with a good opinion of their liege should be quite eager to have their primary heir educated by said liege, and send a request if they currently have no wards.
