IMO the most likely is Pagan (well ... non-Abrahamic) given that there's to few Republics (Genoa, Venice, Pisa, Ancona, Bologna and Cordoba ... any others?) to be 'as big or bigger than SoI' and the same deal is largely true for Theocracy (the different popes and the assorted prince bishops in Germany and Northern Italy).

Pagan on the other hand 'just' need a bit of padding and prehaps a couple of special CB's focusing more on raiding than conquering ... say, gaining twice or trice the ammount of gold from winning sieges and gaining cash by getting the opponent to surrender

793 the battle of Lindisfarne and on would be a cool starting point and actually still fit the Crusade theme where Christian Kings would ally to fend of the Norse invasions and raids. Could be done almost just by pushing the date back IE the history and map and by some tweaks to the Religion side for the Norse pagans.

If it's Tengri/Norse pagans, then it would make sense to introduce (but only for these two!) an "honor" mechanic in the spirit of the Muslim decadence mechanic.

Basically, as a pagan Norse Jarl, or the Khan of Cumans, you would be expected to show your mettle by leading armies in raids on your neighbors. If you turtle up, sit around and do nothing, your courtiers and client chiefs should increasingly dislike you, and eventually replace you with someone more warlike. There could also be various events tied to this (such as avenging your assassinated kin in personal combat).

Separately, there should be dedicated and fleshed out event sequences and/or decisions for deliberate and systematic conversion to Islam or Christianity (hopefully a multi-step process).

^This could combine with a traditional/civilization dynamic I talked about earlier. Basically sticking to tradition will give you more honor, but it will also reduce your ability to get the bonuses of civilization (more taxes, more leeway with Christians/Muslims, etc.). However, going against tradition and adopting "civilized" ways will make you lose honor - but you can outmaneuver by fully becoming a "civilized" nation, thus rendering honor not as useful or something. (Note: I'm using "civilized" here because I can't think of a better term, not because I think pagans are unciviliized)

I'm not sure that a pagan dlc fits into the 'something big' description, which is all we really have to go on.

Somebody above mentioned pushing the start date back. In my view something big would be a Charlemagne campaign, maybe starting with the ascension of Pippin in 752. Charlemagne was already born by then, there was lots of interesting stuff going on, and would add another 300 years of gameplay with Vikings and everything else thrown in. Maybe with a pagan dlc pegged onto it, so you could play the Saxons and others that Charlemagne fought against. More of an expansion than a dlc, ie something BIG !!!

This would add an additional 314 years, and the current timeline of CKII is only 387 years long, so what you are proposing is essentially an entirely new game ( a game Paradox should definitely make sometime later though). As cool an idea I think this is, I just can't see them being able to add all the new history files and get information for landowners from this period as well as add in the new/older cultures/religions AND add gameplay mechanics for all of them.

Not to mention the game is supposed to be alt. history, which means if you go too far back certain events are impossible with the game's mechanics.

Farthest back I can see the start dating being dialed to is 911ad when Rollo becomes Duke of Normandy.

I still have no idea how they'll make republics and theocracies playable. I'd imagine it's pagans, though increasingly I'm hoping it's one of the former, provided they don't have to change the game to a more Europa-like setting.

This is not gonna be the next DLC but I'm hoping someone at Paradox reads this, so they can improve the game in future DLCs/patches:

- No more "longevity curse". Let the character control his lineage (only their potential heirs it's fine, and if someone of them dies change to the second, etc.). It's the single thing that most frustrates me, and I think a lot more people. During my gameplays I've found a lot of examples where things get screwed up because of this. At least let us decide education and marriages of our heirs, even though this won't prevent other stupid things the AI can potentially do.

- Cadet branches anyone? I know this could be potentially big, but at least calculate the score based on the prestige accumulated by your dynasty (just like the dynasty tree with marriages). This way you could enjoy crusading and gaining the kingdom of Jerusalem for your second son, for example. It would give prestige to your dynasty because it's impossible (and it's good that way) to be the king of Scotland and Jerusalem.

Just some ideas for future improvements. Keep the good work, and expecting your next DLC!

I think this DLC is just to make it so you are not invincible if you live on the western front. If you play on the eastern front it is very dangerous when the mongols invade. However on the western front it is safe from Mongols and stuff like that. With this expansion it will make it so Aztecs or other Central-North-South American tribes invade western europe, making the western front not a safe haven.
