Hey there!

Johan got intervied by Gamereactor TV on Gamex about Crusader Kings II: Sunset Invasion,
AND about the future of CK2 and something secret... ;)

"We caught up with Johan Andersson, studio manager at Paradox Development Studio
- to discuss the unhistorical Sunset Invasion DLC for Crusader Kings II, other unhistorical things and what else is in the pipeline for Crusader Kings II.
Apparently there's something big, unannounced coming around new year's, but what it is remains a secret."

The three obvious candidates for DLC which fit 1) historical 2) making a new thing playable 3) oft requested in the forums 4) of as large scope as Sword of Islam are:

1) Pagans (or a subset thereof, where only Tengri would be large enough on its own)
2) Theocracies
3) Republics

Zororastrains are not of large enough scope, playable barons are not requested often enough in the forums. Playable Aztecs is not historical. :)

My personal guess is pagans.

Or they pull the starting date back by 50-100 years. Letting you play... Basileos II... the Christianization of the Kievan Rus... Viking raids galore... I'm sure there would be something to be gained.

It's got to be either Pagans or Theocracies, I'm rather sure.
It's a tough call to make. Pagans wouldn't be all that great, since they're not very widespread, but it would be fun to try and make Paganism survive and thrive.
Theocracies sure aren't widespread, either, and playing as the Pope would be kind of annoying, to be honest. The Patriarch of the Byzantines wouldn't be very fun to play as, either. I don't really see the point aside from getting rid of the annoyance of not being able to play as certain countries.
The same could be said for republics, but they're even smaller within the game's timeframe and less widespread, their only purpose being to allow more countries to be played as from game start.

Therefore, I'm throwing my lot in with Pagans.

I think it is Pagans, since so many people are talking about this and theocracies and republics would need to have different mechanics to be implemented. Plus, sale-wise, if you want to play the Aztecs (which I don't want), you have to have this DLC as well. Otherwise, maybe you could play the Mongols or the east-european pagans.

Anyway, I hope I'll be positively surprised.

I think it's likely Tengri pagans specifically. One big thing that the game is missing, which, unlike a Republic DLC, does not require massive new features (i.e., trade or naval warfare), are RAIDS. All warfare is for territorial gain, which makes no sense on the eastern edge of the map, in particular. The Khan of Cumans should be very keen to enrich himself by pillaging Russian princes. Right now Rus' is boring to play because this important part of the (somewhat stereotyped) historical tapestry simply doesn't exist. I hope this goes along with general improvements to the devastation caused by warfare (at the moment, apart from lost revenues and reduced levies, there's no effect as far as I can tell?).

And, for a fantasy DLC, vampires doesn't sound half-bad. Or, generally, something demonic - however this would be a lot cooler if they first release a dedicated heresy DLC...

P.S.: Obviously, any potential Viking era DLC would also benefit tremendously from a raid CB...

Republics, for I want to play with ESSOS :)

You can not play with Essos... It is not a single republic, rather a number of free cities... You could play a free city though (assuming the submod of Game of thrones mod is up and running).

Back on topic, I assume pagans. Or timeline 100 years back. Those two are nice... Republics - unsure of that, to whoever said pagans are very little spread out - you have a large part of Scandinavia, the Baltics, North East Russia, Pechenegs, Cumania, a lot of them really. Maybe play as the mongols once they invade - they were pagan. who knows?

Personally, I would love it if they spread out the map to include the places up to india, or even china or japan...
I would also like ships for the Indian ocean/red sea provinces, no idea why they do not have them.
Or - maybe they go new world and extend map to America... who knows... it would be nice to get some exploring (Vinland, anyone?), but from both sides of the Atlantic

The best would be - a world map like EU or HOI, and play whoever you want... it would be pure awesomeness...

REPUBLICSSSSSSSSSs !!!!!1

There are basically 5 on the map...while it would be extremely cool to play as Genoa or Venice, it would need a lot of fleshing out and something for them to do besides plotting for world conquest - trade (and trade agreements, and trade posts, etc.). Plus it would fit awkwardly with the whole concept of playing landed characters only. Maybe down the road (I certainly wouldn't mind having naval warfare, trade and more court intrigue).

why do they tease us with amazing camera rotation movements and don't give it to us ?!

I'm sure this came up during development (Rome had it) and then it was poo-pooed by the forum as being too new-fangled and generally not old skool enough, so that's that. Would LOVE to see that implemented.

The best would be - a world map like EU or HOI, and play whoever you want... it would be pure awesomeness...

The only way that would happen is if Paradox went for some kind of an early 90's style super-game composed of 6 separate games, one for each of the 6 continents. (And then they could make an Emperor Penguin Invasion DLC)
