Guys - I love the challenge of gridlock. Fair enough I can play only up to an hour before a crash if I am lucky but isnt this (gridlock) the point of the game?

Cities has no public transport = gridlock. Simples & logical.

Not unrealistic. Its perfectly realistic. The challenge is overcoming the gridlock and reducing it by convincing people to use your public transport.

Lots of traffic should make that task easier as people will be unhappy in theuir cars in traffic jams and will be ever grateful for your metro or similar. :)

Plzzz patch the game so I can win!!!!! Brr Lol noob wtf streamline CiV5 make it easier & put it on ihpne facebook games free to play of charge bollux!

i think you've kind of missed the point of peoples complaints. Traffic and gridlock are fine. Its when they are caused by silly things that annoys them.

From my limited exp thus far these are some of the problems creating traffic

a) buses stop when they have no passengers to offload or pick up
b) other traffic is incapable of going around a stopped vehicle
c) it takes an age for people to get on a vehicle
d) all vehicles seem to be a bit dim when it comes to positioning. Cars stopping on a tram track when there is ample space to move into. Trams stopping across a junction because they cant get through thereby stopping other traffic at the junction from moving either. Water buses getting stuck at a stop and literally being unable to move at all until you remove them from the line or close the line. Granted cars and buses in real life don't have the best of relationships but where i live a tram is very very rarely held up by other vehicles at junctions.
e) Traffic doesn't seem to reduce once you have a good system in place. The graph in one of my games stayed at 18-19% for 4 years despite my system covering 76% of the population, having very good ratings using mostly metro and therefore avoiding all the traffic. If there are 10,000 journeys performed every day by car, and you take 4,000 and get them to use public transport then traffic should at least drop.

I agree with Todge. The problem isn't the gridlock but the reason they happen.
When you see 1 bus blocking the right lane with a free left lane and no car to go on this lane, it's bad.

Very accurate point Todge.
In my own case, playing Helsinki, with very good coverage people still don't use what's available. Not even a single traffic light in the entire city when it comes to traffic, which is less than ideal.
I bet most cities with tram lines in it have traffic rules, giving the trams right of way to any car.
And no commuter lanes either for public transport vehicles? Bad...

Spent some time just eye balling the most central parts of the city and try to figure out what's going on. Then I noticed one direction going in a circle cross the central parts on the widest multiple lane roads where almost free of traffic at any give moment. As a result my bus line is moving along for about 2/4 of the distance before hitting traffic. Still not even close to efficient by any means.
One funny thing that happened was the amount of cars being used ONCE you place a public transport access point on/around a street being traffic free before.
So, if you find some unused streets thinking "Yay, let's do buses here", don't

This all means buses can't be used at all. Even if you progress into modern times with high capacity vehicles, all people do is wait around on the bus instead of at the bus stop. They will still be angry, but angry paying commuters are better than just angry :D
