For some reason, whenever I've opened the L-Gates I almost always get the Dessanu Consonance (pretty lame, since their "gift" doesn't work in Le Guin).

In one of the few times I got the Grey Tempest, the message told me that all the other L-Gates would open except mine. However, after a while of the Tempest fleets devastating the far side of the galaxy my gate opened and I stopped playing. No one in the galaxy is anywhere close to being able to resist their fleets.

What's a good way to use the Grey Tempest to my advantage? It ended up making my economy boom from the pop exodus.

Oh man that gives me a flashback to one of my first Le Guin games, where I had a great position at the core and plenty of worlds and resources.

Then someone released the Grey Tempest early (one of the advanced start empires iirc).

The only 3 empires left standing were myself and the 2 Fallen Empires, one of which had lost chunks of territory to them. My fleets weren't even close to strong enough to fight them myself as I watched the whole galaxy go black.

Quit that game and made a note to turn it into a short horror story at some point.

Unfortunately, you misread that part. Yours does open, only later than the others.

If you're a jerk ( ;) ) you can use them to depopulate much of the galaxy. A fully loaded Star Fortress with your fleet should be able to hold the line against their fleets with minimal losses - they're actually not as strong as the combat power number would suggest, since a lot of it is the Titan weapon. That is, until they finish mowing through the other races in the galaxy and attack you from the back. And by then you had better have a fleet to take out their control system, 'cause else, ouch.

Has nothing to do with being a jerk... That's what you'll have to do if you lack the force to conquer and hold the gate system in the cluster directly. If you allow refugees, this will also boost your population quite a lot (giving you the population to get more alloy income)

They don't really have anything against torpedo corvette spam, so that's how you beat them. Don't bother with cruisers/battleships as their mothership will oneshot them every 5 seconds. Armor is completely useless vs them while shields provide some protections. Raw hull points are the best defense so equip crystal forged plating, if you have that tech.
