Ah... Starting EU 4 for the first time...

For me it was the first Paradox and Grand Strategy game. I started with Portugal and immediately declared war against Castile.

Than I picked Ming and immediately declared war again...

Then I went to bed and watch some YT videos...

I am a huge TW: Shogun 2 fan. But the game, being great, is not developing. So I was looking for something similar. Tried Nobunaga's Ambition (which is Japan-centric; no way to expand further) and even Civ 5 (didn't like the idea of cultural victory lol). Wish I had more time to play EU4, which I don't at the moment, but I will :)

Is the game truly as random as I've heard? How likely am I to get identical playthroughs etc.

There's a huge amount of space between totally random and identical. It's true that you'll probably never see two games turn out exactly the same, but there are plenty of patterns you'll start to see emerging. I wouldn't be so disparaging as to call it completely random. But that's part of what makes things interesting when you do see a really oddball outcome.

To get some sense for where the big break points are, go into your message settings and turn on pop ups for major multi-choice events in other countries. Many of those are at the root of much of the disparity you'll see from one playthrough to the next.

Understood. Thank you! Tooltips are the first thing I made sure to have enabled.
