I have been registered as a member for quite some time, over a year I think. I couldn't find any of my old posts (maybe they have been purged), but that's ok. I recently re-entered the war torn world of HoI via the Platinum version. I have long been trying to find a good WWII strategy game (either turn based or RTS) and never quite found one to my liking. The ones I have tried are Sudden Strike I & II, War Times and Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. All of them have things I liked about them, but they also felt like they had something missing. As far as my gaming goes, I like gathering and managing resources. I also like going through the motions of learning new technologies and upgrading units.

So, when I saw HoI:platinum I decided to give it another shot. I think I may have given up on it too soon. My first game I played as Germany and got my butt whipped in Poland and France :( My next game I didn't do much better, but that may have been because Ireland is a rough country to try and conquer the world with :D. Like I said, though, I may have not given it enough of a chance. I remembered from the original version, it had alot of stuff I like in strategy games. Plus, I don't need to tell you folks how cool it is to be able to choose virtually any country to play.

Anyway, I thought I'd stop by and say hello and get to know the community again.

Hi and welcome (back) to the forums. Seeing as you're kinda new, i'd strongly urge you to read the HoI GD rules and especially this part:

HoI GD Rules said:
NOTE: There will not be any swastikas in the game, because it IS illegal to show them in Germany and various other countries. Same goes for other Nazi symbols (e.g. related to the SS) or Nazi propaganda material, including songs etc. Any links posted to a mod which includes a Swastika or other illegal Nazi symbols will be deleted. Any threads that complain about this issue will be closed.

GZAV,

Hi. Thanks for the welcome and the friendly warning. I have made a mental note not to discuss flags of certain nations and/or certain divisions or units of certain nations. I was going to ask if it's ok to even mention certain symbols, but judging from the rules of the boards, it would probably be best for all concerned to strike those particular references from my vocab.

Since you are resuming the game after a while, check out the FAQ subforum and see what's new there. Find the sticky for the updated manual and download it. And look at the readme.txt for a list of what's changed in the game.

Hi John,

Thanks for stopping by. :D I was fortunate enough that when I purchased my HoI: Platinum that it came with the 88 page manual. I have been reading that. Is there anything that the updated manual download will tell me in addition to the game manual, or do you think I should be set with what I got?

They are the same as far as I know. You can always download the online updated manual and compare the two.

The section on dissent should be enough to determine whether they are the same as the original printed manual section on dissent is not at all like the way that the game handles dissent. If there is a section in your manual about DoW and dissent that references Jdrou and has a table about DoW dissent hits, then it's the same as the online updated manual.
