You know, that TP really ought to be a colony with 10 or so, losing population to attrition. I'm just not in favor of the Greenland settlements being the basis of a viable colonial expansion, since by 1419, contact had been lost and the colonists were heading fast for extinction.

Also, the Inuit didn't even arrive in Greenland until the Scandinavians had disappeared. There shouldn't be natives there until 1460 or thereabouts, and sure as shooting not in those numbers.

And Iceland should be a vassal rather than an integral part of the Danish crown, since it basically had to be rediscovered too. Maybe an event later in the game that annexes it to Denmark.

Ah, well. I'm bringing this up way too late. I'll bear it stoically.:D

Actually, there were few inuits there, true that they were very thin on the ground, and mostly restrivted to inland of Greenland but, I rmbr reading an account that Vikings in the settlement had met them.

My opinion - the decision to give Norway / Kalamr tp's in Grenland and Newfoundland was made to placate a few rabid Norwegian historians. The impact on the game is mostly negative and I would be very glad if it was changed in 1.06.

My proposal would be to give Norway knowledge of the sea zones but not the land. There was no way anybody in Europe was going to mount a takeover of a few failing colonies in Greenland / Newfoundland and the potential to screw up the game does not justify the historical "correctness" of the TP's

It doesn't really screw up the game. Aside from a few random explorers or such, they don't get many explorers early on. If they did manage to get one they could discover parts of n. america early, that is true. But it was more to keep Greenland from going to England as it always seemed to. One other thing..Denmark doesn't have knowledge of Greenland, when they inherit norway do they receive their maps?

Yes - and when Sweden sack the Danish capital they receive the maps as well. The problem is that the AI immediately decides that the little ice age is nothing to worry about and colonises Greenland. It's silly and for the sake of a minor historical inaccuracy I'd much rather Greenland and Newfoundland stayed TI until the 1500's.

My opinion for what its worth

well how often does the AI sack Danish capital? Ok, lets face it. In 9/10 games I'd dare to wager Sweden takes over all of Scandanavia and normally finishes off Denmark. At least in my case since Denmark was made less aggressive. I dont think it really hurts the game that much. as long as it stays scandanavian its fairly accurate.

The game doesn't model the little ice age at all; which makes Greenland attractive at a time when it was largely uninhabitable. Frankly, for a century or so the winter white should cover Europe down to the Alps for several months a year, while the entire Baltic and much of the North Sea and North Atlantic ices up. Places like Nova Scotia should have negative colonization modifiers as well.

If this were done, though, the Northern powers would be seriously handicapped versus the Southern. Perhaps that's as it should be.

No. I disagree. When (not if) Sweden takes over Scandinavia they become a powerhouse that is impossible for the AI to stop. Sweden makes incursions into Russia and into Germany of a acale that can hardly be called historical. Sweden is seriuosly overpowered and unless the player is a Northerne European power, Sweden takes over in that region completely - in 9 out of 9, as they say.
It should be obvious to everyone that this is bad for the game, yet Paradox strangely seems pleased with the way it works up there in the cold North - maybe because they themselves are Sweedes ....

It's not so much that Sweden is too strong as that their neighbours are too weak. Denmark has the Holstein problem where in many cases Holstein takes Jylland from them, Norway is weak in itself and Denmark seldom does a good job with recruiting troops there which would help against Sweden. Novgorod always gets swamped with DoWs from the start and with the latest patch it is picked apart within the first 20 years. Muscowy is (wisely) more interested in going east and doesn't seem to want to bother Sweden much. Basically, if Sweden gets into wars with these countries separately they always do well, in wars against a couple of them not so well, but bounces right back up.
