Greek versions of Imperial names

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the Greek style of a few famous Roman names?

After restoring the empire I figured I would start using some names of my favorite emperors or members of the Julio-claudians

You can see Tiberios/Tiberius as the first in the list of the history.

I also did a search and came to conclude Klaudios/Claudius.

How about Augustus, Gaius, Drusus, etc? If anyone has any more to add I would love to read them.

Augustus in greek is either augoustos or sebastos. As for names (done from memory so may not be correct)

Maurice - Maurikios
Heraclius - Herakleios
Justin - Iustinos
Justinian - Iustinianos
Leo - Leo/Leon
Alexander - Alexandros
Gaius - Gauios
Anastasius - Anastasios
Phocas - Phokas

It's pretty formulaic for the most part.

Nicephorus = Nikephoros
Julius (Iulius) = Ioulios
Caesar = Kaisar
Tiberius = Tiberios
Justinian (Iustinian) = Ioustinianos
Trajan (Traianus) = Traianos
Hadrianus = Adrianos
Marcus = Markos

I think you get the picture. If you look at the title history of the Byzantine Empire it goes back to Tiberius I, then skips ahead to Phillip the Arab (Philippos Aravas) and from him forward it continues on pretty consistently though it does skip a lot of unimportant people who didn't rule for very long as there were A LOT of those.

As said it is usually quite formulaic and there are the historical in game references, but another resource is in the files; from 00_cultures.txt for example. The names with "Ioulianos_Julian" are differentiated Greek names from the 'base' name. Put in spoiler so that it doesn't take up huge text space. You can see the obvious patterns here. Yeah this file is very useful I use it for whatever culture I play.

It is extremely useful isn't it? I'm always surprised by the amount of people who don't look to the files first for answers. Just making sure you were aware of that file. Drusus would probably be Drousos in game which represents a medieval formal Greek written in the latin alphabet, a modern form of the Greek version is pronounced Drousou, you can do a google search and find that name, and I just made a guess using the conventions that are apparent to me, and then furthermore Google translate of all things agreed with me here.

Some other names that haven't been mentioned that I remember, Nero = Neron, Vespasian = Vespasianos, quite formulaic indeed.


I'm always interested in doing research to give my characters cool names so I spend a lot of time researching this stuff instead of playing the game. Problem is that I usually don't remember the research after I do it.
