Greece and southern Italy have over 50 countries

Ans some of those countries are bigger than a simple province as well, Macedonia probably have over 6 provinces with how tiny some are in Italy.
It would be fun to rule a small, obscure city state and carve out an empire from it. Much like how Rome jumped from a collection of villages, into a walled city, into the hegemon of Italy and then the entire Mediterranean.
Yes, Macedonia is bigger, but only because this follows the expansions of KIng Philip and Alexander. Rome will get that big too once it begins to swallow up allthe tiny territories that surround it. But yeah, the first thing that struck me about the map was how many many territories there are, all independent sovereign states (one presumes). Expansion is NOT going to be fast or easy!
That Macedon is actually after being reduced some by Antigonus' son Demetrios liberating all those tasty city states along the isthmuses, it would have been even larger set just a paltry 2 years before.

Yes, you could argue that there should be more, far more, every city a uniquely independent state - but the game also has to be playable - and enjoyable. This is already far more than we have ever had in any other game ever, so I think they have done a fine job with this, taking it even this far.
Italy has too big regions, and Rome region seems wrong . There were also other important powers that don't seem to be present , like Volsci and others.

Its the country there are multiples regions inside Rome in the screenshot in OP.
It's still a work in progress. Johan has stated that the map has already changed again since these pictures were taken.

I just hope there will be intelligent mechanics to prevent all those small city states from being wiped out in the first 20 years of the game like it is the case in EU4.
Rome controlled pretty much all of Southern Italy 30 years after the start date.
I was thinking more the Greek city states, or Gallic tribes conquering each other.
Fair enough. But the dominant dynamic in that time period for Greece was the League, most notably the Aetolian and Achaean Leagues, as those tiny city states banded together in the face of larger powers. So, even there, the 3rd century BC saw political consolidation, and there’s different ways that could be represented.
Hopefully, this should be taken into consideration when conquering the region, as Rome did not expand by fighting a league and then eating it piecemeal, but by dominating the league itself, often after being invited in as an arbitrator or guarantor of a league’s liberties.
