  • Crusader Kings III Available Now!

The realm rejoices as Paradox Interactive announces the launch of Crusader Kings III, the latest entry in the publisher’s grand strategy role-playing game franchise. Advisors may now jockey for positions of influence and adversaries should save their schemes for another day, because on this day Crusader Kings III can be purchased on Steam, the Paradox Store, and other major online retailers.

Paper Sorcerer on Steam $5 is really interesting game. Hand drawn graphics you party consists of the minions you the Sorcerer wishes to summon then you level them up. For example my party is a skeleton, vampire and witch. Its almost Like a modern Wizardy. Basic storyline but it fits with the game perfectly. Your basically an evil wizard that the kingdom trapped in a magical book.

I really enjoyed Mass Effect 1 disliked 2 and didn't bother with 3. Dragon Age was pretty decent I thought but it lacked when compared to D&D and Star Wars Bioware games.

Haven't tried the Witcher Series how good is it?

I really like them, though the combat system is a bit clunky. The story is great, based on the books written by Andrzej Sapkowski and the atmosphere, the world, is very dark. The second one has some great quests, although some boss battles are... extremely frustrating. Had to ask a friend to help me defeat the first one, and I played on the easiest setting... I really recommend them though. Great games, with some flaws.

There are ways in which I can admire the Witcher, particularly the way in which character choices affect the storyline, but I really disliked Geralt and found it difficult to care what happened in this crapsack world to all full of despicable people. I gave up on the first one in act three soon after the game askedme why I was pursuing the Salamandra and I couldn't really answer beyond to continue the story.

RPGs I have played and liked in no particular order:

The Witcher 1 and 2
Oblivion
Morrowind
Skyrim
Might and Magic 7, 8 and 9
Dragon Age
Torchlight I and II
Diablo III
Fable I and III
Drakensang
Risen 2
Two Worlds II

I forgot Sacred 1 and 2! I kind of got bored with Sacred 2 when an escort quest got horribly wrong but up until that I rather enjoyed myself.

RPGs? Well, I've played a lot of them. My favorite stories from RPGs (unordered, since they're very different and hard to rank) are:

-Knights of the Old Republic 1 (Like the first Star Wars movie, this one has some of the best progression and flow I've ever seen in a game's story)
-Chrono Trigger (Covers so much ground and is never dull, you get the full history of the world laid out to you with real weight to your story)
-Planescape Torment (Most fascinating and mysterious story and world)
-Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (This game is the story of a man from child to father, with the best characters ever if you've got the party speak option in the DS version. Even without that, several moments still give me chills thinking about them.)

I've played lots of others, but it's usually the story that stands out to me in these games. The Tales of Games come to mind for good examples of gameplay, same with the first two Paper Mario games. The Fallout gameplay was fairly good, and if you are going to go turn based without timed hits or other special combat actions, I'd stay well away from one action per character per round.

Was wondering what cRPG's influenced the devs or which ones they liked the most.

I would have to list my top 5 as:

1. Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn
2. Planescape Torment
3. Final Fantasy III (US Title)
4. Fallout (Any title I wont argue)
5. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

Honorable mentions
Paper Mario, Torchlight II, Phantasy Star II, Deus Ex and Dragon Warrior (US Title)
To be honest, I wouldn't consider Final Fantasy III, Paper Mario, or Torchlight II to be RPGs. They're more action/adventure games given the fact that a meaningful choice and consequence dynamic is almost nonexistent. I especially hate the false-choice offered in most JRPGs.

"Do you want to rescue Bill?"
"No."
"Don't be crazy, of course you do! Let's go!"

Chrono Trigger is the rare exception to the rule.

As for my personal faves (in random order):

Dragon Age: Origins
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Fallout 3
Planescape Torment
Morrowind
Chrono Trigger

Diablo 3 is on the list. Instantly loses credibility.
"Listed a game I don't like. Instantly loses credibility."

Seriously?

In my eyes that instantly raises his credibility because it means that as a developer, he can filter out the background noise of the vocal minority and is able to recognize a quality game when he sees it.

Whether or not Diablo III is a quality game, what it definitely is not is an RPG, and that is what causes the loss of credibility.

The two Knights of the Old Republic for me are 2 of the best RPG's ever. I was sad it did not translate well to online.
Neverwinter Nights 1/2 both good games.

My 2 true old classic faves though are: Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past; and Final Fantasy III for SNES. I still own em both and the system I got when I was 8. That stuff 22 years old now.

Kotor I & II are the best singleplayer RPG's ever made..

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement.

My "I've played this" list (if I play it, I typically like it to a degree):

SWKoTOR
SWKoTOR II
TES III Morrowind
SWTOR (not sure if it counts)
FATE (first ever, see note on SWTOR)

Wow. I haven't actually played very many...

I personally like Dragon Age: Origins most of all. Also fond of Skyrim (but not Morrowind, curiously), Dragon Age II (I'm probably the only one), Baldur's Gate I and II (but not Tales of the Sword Coast), Neverwinter Nights, the Mass Effect trilogy, Ultima Underworld, Fallout 1-3, KOTOR 1 and 2, Torchlight, Diablo I and II, Shadowrun (for SNES, no less), Fable I, most JRPGs pre Final Fantasy X-2.

If it's not on the list, changes are I haven't played it. :) The only RPGs I've ever played and not liked are Morrowind (which I just found too open world; no idea what I was doing or why I should be doing it), Tales of the Sword Coast, and Final Fantasy X-2.

I only look at the quality of storytelling when deciding which RPGs I've enjoyed. Nothing else matters much unless other game mechanics are mind-bogglingly broken or tedious.

So far, the list goes in order...

1. The Witcher 2. Great writing and superb storytelling.
2. Game of Thrones RPG. Mediocre game play, greatest storytelling.
3. Planescape:Torment. Need I say more?
4. Expeditions: Conquistador: awesome indie RPG game with superb writing
5. Dragon age: Origins. Cliched story but nice cast of characters and pace.
6. Baldur's gate 2: Same as DA:O, only with less dialogue and unbalanced combat with more quests and freedom.
7. Vampire - The Masquerade Bloodlines: the mood is really good. Almost as good as dat movie Twilight.

Horrible mentions:
Two Worlds II: non existent story

The Last Remnant: First time I've played JRPG. Never going back to this grind-fest. Took 30 hours to beat, 15 of which were spent battling. The twist is that I used a trainer to max out my levels and battles still took that long.

The Guild 2 - Renaissance: result of good ideas and incomplete mechanics.

NeverWinter Nights: Don't play this game at all cost. Worst Bioware game ever.

Mass Effect 3: Treats you like a preteen gamer.
