  • Crusader Kings III Available Now!

The realm rejoices as Paradox Interactive announces the launch of Crusader Kings III, the latest entry in the publisher’s grand strategy role-playing game franchise. Advisors may now jockey for positions of influence and adversaries should save their schemes for another day, because on this day Crusader Kings III can be purchased on Steam, the Paradox Store, and other major online retailers.

Was wondering what cRPG's influenced the devs or which ones they liked the most.

I would have to list my top 5 as:

1. Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn
2. Planescape Torment
3. Final Fantasy III (US Title)
4. Fallout (Any title I wont argue)
5. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

Honorable mentions
Paper Mario, Torchlight II, Phantasy Star II, Deus Ex and Dragon Warrior (US Title)

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 have been re-released very recently in "Enhanced Editions" (99.9% faithful to the original games, but updated graphics and interface; also, cheap price). I played them for a while and they seemed to be perfectly playable and enjoyable for a modern gamer, so if dated graphics and mechanics were your main concern, I'd pick BG1: EE if I were you and see how it goes ;)

Those two games (especially BG2) are extremely, immensely good, such as no cRPG has ever been since them. There's a reason they're so fondly remembered.

Or the original BG1 with BG2 and the addongs in the BG Trilogy mod :) So you can play BG1 with all the improvements of BG2 and ToB.

I think it is the history that makes them live so long. The rest has been improved a lot in other games, but it is the most epic history i have seen in a crpg

of all the D&D games, Planescape is the best. Your main character wakes up on a slab in the morgue with no idea of how he got there or who he is. He cannot die, and every time you die you wake up in the morgue again. Some quests require dieting to solve. The plot of the game is figuring out who you are and why you can't die.

Do not get the Enhanced Editions of Baldurs Gate, they just managed to create a whole load of bugs without adding anything of value. Just mod the originals.

I am aware of their (not too many) issues, but what the Enhanced Editions provide is accessibility, and that's exactly what Baldur's Gate needs because it's approximately as old as the invention of fire. Press a button, buy, download, play. For a person who finds playing the original games a bit too cumbersome and "old timey" to feel attractive, "just get the games somehow and mod them extensively according to detailed descriptions in old websites" may not be the answer they're looking for. Even if the modded game is (marginally) better in some aspects.

aa a fan of tactical RPGs my favorite of all time in all platforms is Gladius.

I am a fan of Silent Storm Series as far as tactical rpgs go. There ragdoll physics and completely destructible environments were magical at the time. Having trouble storming the building because of guards? Well just blow the entire building up or floor or back wall, whatever. Had a really nice progression tree and permadeath for characters since you could hire new rookies.

The original Xcom and many people would not the original Shadowrun as well.

Expeditions Conquistador is a great modern take on tactical RPG's.That indie development team really over achieved and knocked it out of the park.

Is this game like Elven Legacy or different from it? I hope they use impressive and new ideas for this game not like Elven legacy.

Do not get the Enhanced Editions of Baldurs Gate, they just managed to create a whole load of bugs without adding anything of value. Just mod the originals.

EE on the iPad is a great portable RPG. I've had loads of fun with it. I haven't noticed a lot of major bugs, just the sort of stuff I'd expect from that era of game. :)

The Silent Storm games are great. You have to accept some bugs going in, but they're really good gameplay.

RPGs I have played and liked in no particular order:

The Witcher 1 and 2
Oblivion
Morrowind
Skyrim
Might and Magic 7, 8 and 9
Dragon Age
Torchlight I and II
Diablo III
Fable I and III
Drakensang
Risen 2
Two Worlds II

Diablo 3 is on the list. Instantly loses credibility.

I seriously hope that Shadowrun isn't one of the influences for Runemaster. Whatever greatness it had in it was quickly killed by 100% linearity in the campaign.

Also, Sara, please not Risen 2. It was such a terrible game, from the very idea to the botched release and the lack of support afterwards. :-(
