Hi!
I wonder what is the point with certain improvements in great works, such as the spikes or the torture chamber. In the description it says "can be used to execute prisoners"...But I can execute prisoners without this, and after I build the spikes I get exact the same penalties if I execute someone, get no bonus, and I have no special option to execute people in the spikes or torture chamber.
So I wonder what is the point with this, or if I maybe am missing something.
Thank you!

First off, I admit I mostly clicked to see if the somewhat-pun in the title was deliberate.
But mostly, for me the point of having spikes is... Well, you have a spikey Castle/Palace/whathaveyou. Don't you want spikes on every building you own, playing this game?
Maybe you can stick your enemies offspring onto them after flaying the first four and goring them with boars. Then they get to see them.

I think we are sort of losing the point though. In general, Spikes have only one point: To stick things onto them or let things stick the spikes into themselves. They perform that adequately if you put them on a Great Work. But I'd only use them if you have a slot left and got all the good things already, or you REALLY like to ramp up the Evil Overlord-ambience.

I use them for the latter, really. Not a Cathedral of mine without baby-skeleton-spikes.

IMO Great Wonders were introduced for the sole purpose to exist as a money and time sink for power players. A lot of blobbers (I am NOT one of them) complained that game got too easy, I think that by encouraging players to sink thousands and thousands of gold into something that might just give you the same effect as a good artifact it will somehow make the game more satisfying for them.

I know that I want to use the mechanic but I always start small and in an early start so I am almost always broke !

Really useful for talking to vassals and courtiers to make sure they see things from your point of view.
You can do that with gargoyles who are much more fitting for a cathedral.

I on the other hand was wondering more about what the improvement for storing relics does... So, you store a relic in it...and what? Does it bestow some boon on the province?

What spikes actually do is they unlock a new possible death reason for characters you execute (impaled on spikes or whatever it's called), but they do not give you any real execution bonuses. The actual bonuses are the increased fortification level and the intimidation option.
