It's at Volgograd. I don't know where that is in Russia, have never been. But it is the statue at Volgograd. Awesome looking for sure, it is the largest statue in the world i believe.

The first picture is all wrong though.
It's supposed to represent the Colossus of Rhodos, but the real one never looked anything like this. The actual Colossus was supposed to show the sun god Helios, and he presumably looked much like the statue of liberty, with a foot-long garment and a crown of rays. Of course he didn't stand over the entrance of the harbour but beside it, and his legs weren't spread.

Here you have another two colossi. Rather hideous specimens, IMHO...

The Arminius monument (Hermannsdenkmal) in the Teutoburg Forest.
The picture is old, but the abomination still stands.

It's true Apollon the Colossus at Rhodos was not like the one pictured. that one seems to be standard fantasy fair with the legs spread over the harbour.. would be impressive though...

That one in Graz looks pretty ugly but the top one looks pretty cool.

The statue of Napoleon at Place Vendome in Paris.

These two statues are both made from melted down cannon, Nelson from French cannon from Trafalgar, and Nappy from Austrian and Russian guns. Incidentally, they are also facing each other from many miles apart.

Volgograd is the new name for Stalingrad. After the fall of communism, people decided to rename that, and Leningrad was changed back to St. Petersburg, although the capital remained in Moscow.

Tsaritsyn = Volgograd = Stalingrad.

Tsaritsyn was the old name. It was renamed Stalingrad in 1925 (I think it was called Volgograd for a short period before already but I have nothing to confirm that right now) and in 1961 it was renamed to Volgograd during the destalinization.

Great stuff guys.. I know Stalingrad but did not know it had so many monikers. Like Leningrad / St. Petersburg i know it must have had another name.. but never knew what it was.

Here is one from Afghanistan.. though i guess it is not around any more..

I don't think they should have renamed Stalingrad. Not that I'm a fan of Stalin by any means, it's just that so many men died for that city that the name shouldn't have changed.

Does the Crazy Horse statue count
