Hello!

We're aware that certain graphics drivers are experiencing issues with Age of Wonders 4 that can lead to crashes. Our team is working as quickly as we can to solve this issue and we hope to publish a patch soon, and in the meantime, we're sorry this is interfering with your arcane ambitions. We'd appreciate it if you can share the data on any crashes you have experienced; this will help us narrow down and fix the problem.

Things you can do to work around the issue are:

  • If you are on Steam, please switch to the "hotfix" branch. Right click the game, then "properties > betas".
  • Make sure you have the latest graphics drivers for your hardware.
  • Toggle the "Settings > Graphics > VSync" setting on, if off, or off, if on.
  • Lower the "Settings > Graphics > Shadow Quality" setting. * Lower the "Settings > Graphics > Quality Mode" setting.

Thank you for your help and for supporting our game!
This tip help me so much, thx for help. But after yesterday's patch the game kept crashing, more often then after installing.

Could someone copy'n'paste minimal graphics settings from <YourUserDir>\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Age of Wonders 4\Config\PlatformSettings0.cfg ? Unfortunately I cannot even reach the settings menu and several of the settings are on a numeric scale instead of booleans.

Doesn't help me at all unfortunately. Both with the config file above and when reverting to
Video.DisplayAdapterID=-1
Video.DisplayAdapterName=<default>
Video.DisplayOutputName=0
for these select entries. Always the same behavior, screen turns black, cursor goes (presumably) ingame, tries to load and then crashes out. The log always shows the same assertion fails. No dump file because the crash handler does not enjoy Wine.

I must admit I'm getting slightly cranky.

I'm sorry that you're getting frustrated but things are going to be more trying when you're on a OS we don't support. Does Wine Support DirectX 12 cause that is a requirement for AoW4.

I'm running into the same startup issue also reported by other Windows users. If those were fixed (and from all I can see: they aren't) I could at least have a close look at Wine and it's surroundings.

However, over on Steam you could find reports of people joking how their Wine-based builds work better than what they see for others on Windows. On the VKD3D GitHub there is even an issue about a minor graphical flaw visible via Wine but not on Windows in the same circumstances.

From all I know, especially for DX12, there is only the thinnest possible layer because Vulkan and DX12 follow the same basic philosophy and the only real reason for having both APIs is Microsoft's ego and their desire to keep vendorlocking people.

Edit: additionally, protondb has it as platinum. When it works, it seems to work flawlessly...

I am occasionally affected by the graphics driver crashes (RTX 3080Ti), but not often enough to prevent play. However I've seen many mentions of hotfixes & patches to remedy this but I must have been affected by Blind for 3 turns - I cannot find the new version that I've some people reference when posting new bugs.

The image included shows v1.002.003.78130 is available, but I seem eternally stuck on v1.002.003.77876 (or hotfix variant). Do I need to do a complete uninstall to get the new version ?

TIA.

Hmm that's odd. It's certainly not something I've ever seen before as switching branches should already force an update. At best I can recommend you to have a look at this troubleshooting guide from Steam. The only other thing I could imagine is potentially something being blocked through your Anti Virus program?

im on the beta hotfix but still crashing game does not run
Hi Batragor, sorry to hear you're still crashing after the updates. Are you crashing on launching the game or during gameplay? Do you have the name of a crash dump that I could retrieve from our backend by any chance?
