Hey,

I have the following problem: My graphics card starts to overheat when playing. I run the game on a Geforce GTX 650Ti with GDDR5 2GB memory. The heating problem is confined to the graphics card. I cleaned the fan of dust, so that ain't the reason and I'm not having this problem with (I'm sorry to say so) far more graphically advanced games. The card heats up to about 90°C and higher which makes is impossible to play the game without damaging the graphics card. All drivers are up to date. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated cause I really like what I have seen of the game till now.

With the best greetings

Hello Soulkill,

Could you please post a DxDiag of your system? Also, this is only happening while playing Crusader Kings II, or have you been measuring the temperature also while playing other games? Also, what is the average temperature of your video card if you leave the pc idle for a while? (You can use software like GPU-Z, Speedfan, Speccy or similar to measure this)

  • Open your Start menu
  • Type "dxdiag" in the search field (without quotes)
  • Open the dxdiag program
  • A window called "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" should pop up now
  • At the bottom right-hand side, click on "Save all information"
  • Save it to a place where you can find it easily, for example your desktop
  • Open the file and copy and paste the text between [NOPARSE]
    Code:
    [/NOPARSE] tags.

You can copy the line below and paste the text between the orange tags.
Code:
[COLOR="#FFA500"][NOPARSE][CODE][/NOPARSE][/COLOR]paste text here...[COLOR="#FFA500"][NOPARSE]
[/NOPARSE][/COLOR][/CODE]

Hey IcratoX,

This problem is indeed only happening while I play Crusader Kings II. Otherwise my temperature is at solid 37°-45°C. When I play other games with high graphics it can go up to about 60°C. But Crusader Kings gets it past 75°C when I start a game in the load screen (when it loads up the game map which you can play on).

Here is the dxgiag file:

--deleted, problem solved--

Thanks for the fast replay by the way ;)

Been looking a bit into the graphics card, it looks like the maximum temperature (according to Nvidia) is 105 degrees, the specifications you can find here: http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-650ti/specifications

Crusader Kings II takes calculations over from the CPU to save load on the CPU which could explain why it is having a heavier load than other games, however, to me personally, 90 degrees still sounds like a lot. Could you download the program GPU-Z, before you start the game watch what the average temperature is and then try playing for +/- 15 to 30 minutes. Then check again the temperature(s) that GPU-Z is giving you. (Next to that you can also check the max temperature by clicking on the GPU temperature drop-down and select Show highest reading).

Also, is it a custom built pc or one that you bought complete?

I have been checking out the temperature for the graphics card for about 15 Minutes now an it ended up at exactly 90°C after about 3 minutes of playing Crusader Kings II and stayed there for the rest of the duration. Forced the fan speed up to 71%.
My rig is indeed a custom built PC even though I recently (about a month ago) replaced the graphics card with the now installed.

Maybe this amount of graphics card usage is normal, I don't have that much insight into the amount of load that Crusader Kings II dispatches to the GPU. But I thought a GTX 650Ti should not run a game of this scale at such a high temperature.

Look in your CK2 settings.txt - what refreshRate is set in there? What frame rate (fps) is the game running at? If you have no way of telling, install fraps . If it's at more than about 72fps that can drive the card crazy like this, you can use fraps to restrict it down to say 60fps.

Hey AndrewT,

The Frame Rate is at 60 in the settings.txt and dosent go past 56 frames per sek when I play Crusader Kings 2. So that ain't the problem neither. I have been playing the game for some longer time periods today and the temperature of the card never past 90°C so maybe this is normal, even though I still think of 90°C being to high it dosent stop me playing the game.

settings.txt tells you the refreshRate, not the frames per second, which is what I was after. Did you use fraps or similar to get fps?
