I think having an option to give your heir a landed title and then start playing as them would be a fun addition to the game. Quite often you end up playing a 70-something old man with great grandkids that have stupid names and terrible traits and when you die you get to look forward to playing as a 50-something old man.

A lot of the fun in the game happens when you're young, but you tend to miss out on it. Obviously there would be risks to doing this, the person you were playing as might get in trouble, hurting your inheritance, or they might change the succession laws, but it would be cool to have the option.

Quite often you end up playing a 70-something old man with great grandkids that have stupid names and terrible traits...

Those young whippersnappers with their hippie names and their immodest behavior, no respect for authority I tells ya! Get off my lawn!

While your suggestion is interesting, this does take away from the dynastic element of the game, I think--there's a lot of fun in continuity, even if it means having to be an old man for a while. If you only want young'uns to inherit, why not try Elective succession? Maybe Paradox could add a youth-preference succession sometime, too, as happened in a few select places.

Ultimogeniture would be interesting, but there's basically no precedent for it. Elective is the best way to ensure young-ish heirs and therefore long reigns.

If you really want to play as your heir, you can simply land them, save the game, and then load in as them. Again, all the problems you mentioned will occur (AI is braindead and will lose your inheritance >.<).

I'd love to be able to split off as a new King when my lands are getting too big. Or, with the new Republic features, to set up and then play as a republic. But this is all easily done by just saving and reloading as them.

You can already just grant a landed title to your heir and save/reload as your heir. That's not so difficult or complex that it warrants a new option implemented in the game itself.

Not only that, I thought Paradox games always had issues when you switch TAGs without reloading afterwards. Or did they finally squish that bug with CK2.
There are no alphanumeric tricharacter tags in CK2

There's also quite a few mods that include an "abdicate throne" decision, which lets you play as your next of kin early.
