Welsh Expansion Beta

Welsh Expansion Beta

What is included here:

Wales:

1) Welsh dynasties corrected and updated for the 1066 Hastings and the 3rd Crusade Scenarios. (Have not added their Welsh decendents in the last scenario yet)

-Aberffraw ( the of Gwynedd dynasty corrected)
-Dinefwr (completely recreated, vanilla was completly off)
-Mathrafal (corrected from the Cynfyn dynasty)
-Afen (Corrected from Caradoc dynasty)
-Llywellyn added (the heirs of King Gruffydd Llywellyn by his wife Eadith of Mercia (also wife of Harold Godwinson). Their two sons and daughter added. They can be found in court of Lancaster and in Hereford.)

2) Important leading Welsh church figures added in 1066 Hastings scenario:
-Suilan of Llanbadarn and sons in Deheubarth
-Herewald of Llancarfan and sons in Glamorgan

3) Expanded Welsh personal naming list

4) Expanded Welsh generic surname list

5) Corrected Geography:

-Gwynedd is now Mountains (yr Wyddfa)
-Clwyd is now hills
-Powys is now hills
-Glamorgan is now hills
-Dyfed remains plains
-Gwent remains forest
-Moray is Mountains (Ben Nevis in Scotland)

6) Welsh provencial values corrected. They are what was discussed in the 1.6 thread, excpet Dyfed is rated 4 instead of 3, for a total of 20.

7) St. Davids in Dyfed (Sulian of Llanbadarn and sons) and Llanilltud Fawr (Herewald and sons) in Glamorgan are now represented

7) Duchy of Gwynedd is now slate grey rather then yellow. Kingdom of Wales is Imperial Purple, which connects them historically to the Brythoniad, the Romano-Britons and heirs of Imperial Rome. Also, there is no purple represented on this end of the map :rolleyes:

8) If one looks, one can see that the Aberffraw, Mathrafal, and Dinefwr dynasties all are directly decended to Rhodri the Great. The Mathrafal dynasty is related through Princess Anghared. In the Hastings start, the famos Aberffraw dynasty can be found in exile in Dublin. They of corse are well represented in the Third Crusade having retaken their claim.

England:

1) Castles removed from England, and added to Normandy
2) Saxons given rebellios trait, and Willian de Normandie given realm duress to represented the Wars after Hastings. Northumbria and Mercia (Lancaster and Cumberland) allied.
4) King of France has a claim on duchy of Normandy
5) ((Accidentially left England allied to Normandy at the 1066 Hastings scenario, this shall be corrected when I update it next))

Brittany

1) Breton culture added using Celtic tag
2) Added Breton dynasty names, reassigned Breton dynasties to Breton versions of their names, so Kernow for de Courniaulle, Rhoazn for de Rennes.
3) Expanded Breton naming list

*Very interesting culture I might add

Scoland and Ireland: Gaelicized some of the dynasty names there.

Yet do do:

1)Welsh cultural events- dont know how to script yet
2)Welsh dynasties added to the last scenario (such as Owain Lawgoch Aberffraw, a mercanary in the service of the French king.)
3) Others, as yet undefined.

Note: I welcome anyone to use the corrected Welsh dynasties here, as I have really researched them in depth.

If you're going to really hammer Wales into shape, could you have a look at the ahistorical CoAs which Gwynedd and the Kingdom of Wales gets? That seems to me an obvious thing which could be corrected, even if it would freak out every player of Gwynedd ;)

edit: Wales should be a golden/red dragon on a white field or possibly the same as the current arms of the Prince of Wales but without the green shield and crown in the centre (picture of the defaced Gwynedd 'prince of Wales' coat of arms here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_Arms_of_the_Principality_of_Wales or another version without the defacement is found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llywelyn_ap_Gruffydd)

This is the arms of the House of Aberffraw/Gwynedd, currently used in standard for the Kingdom of Wales. The question is, do we wish to use these arms for the Duchy of Gwynedd? And create a new Kingdom of Wales arms? What I think is incongrouas is the use of the red dragon on white/green background as the duchy of Gwynedd arms. It almost seems like it should be reversed.

The red dragon on white/green shouldn't be used at all really. I'd revert the lions passant to the duchy and introduce the reddy gold dragon on white as the Kingdom flag. It's what Glyndwr used as his rallying standard for the entirety of Wales and I think that marks it clearly as something special in the history of Wales. The red dragon on white/green comes from Henry Tudor which is why I'm not keen on it being used in CK for a Kingdom of Wales. Using the arms of Gwynedd as the Kingdom CoA also seems a little deterministic - what if the southerners create the kingdom?

Going through Hywel Dda's law code at the moment. Happiness :p

No, Because William de Normandie will make short order of the Saxon dukes, like he did historically. England wil not be undone with this event. I have no desire for Englands demise with this.

Agreed then, though I have not seen this CoA for Glyndwr. So on the Glyndwr standard it was a half red half gold dragon on a white background? Was it the same Welsh dragon we see today? Which half is Gold and which red also. Maybe we can have someone create it for us.

So far I have played 2 games, where William starts with realm duress and the two Saxons with rebellious trait. So far the Scottish and Welsh haven't conquered anything from England, but England neither hasn't conquered Wales (in one game the AI even created his own kingdom of Wales) or Scotland.

Since William his reputation is good at the start of the scenario and all his vassals are at 100% loyalty, there is a chance that the realm duress will end pretty soon for him

Might someone help locate the Breton dynasties for me? I created new dynasty tags for them but now have to find all of them in the 1066 scenario and assign them Celtic culture so they can be Breton.

For ream duress for William, I do hope that within the first 15 years the trait does not dissapear, rather it should be a stop on excessive expansion too early.

It's not Glyndwr's CoA. Glyndwr used the CoA of the 'twysog' (the elected chief judge of Wales if you like) - he's unlikely to have had his own personal CoA due to him refusing to pay for his knighthood. The dragon on white was used as his battle standard - much as the red dragon on white/green was the battle standard of Henry Tudor. The actual colour of the dragon is a reddy gold or goldy red - it's one colour, just not a usual colour. The dragon was most probably passant if the standard was the usual shape.

Would this effect be duplicated for the purposes of the game? Also, I thougt twysog and twysoges were prince and princess in Welsh? Where can I follow up on that?

Also be thinking about some Welsh culture specific events we can script. I have skimmed the Welsh Laws of Hywl Dda and think certin events that the laws were written for could be used in an event sequence. Since Breton has a very close cultural tradition, they can be taged for these events too (unless we get a knowladgable Breton historian who can point out specific simularities and differences)

Thanx Veld on that quick post! I dont suppose you know which families the different codes belong to?

Twysog used to be a rank not a title (it's Gaelic translation would be taosaich if that gives you a clearer idea about the difference). The rulers of Gwynedd managed to alienate large parts of Wales because they tried to make the twysog a hereditary position. (Incidentally, it's also why the title annoys Welsh nationalists when used by the English Princes of Wales.) It should be a kind of 'elected' position. Wales wasn't a feudal society - especially not in the north. The people had to be led not driven. The definitive essay on what 'twysog' actually means is A. J. Otway-Ruthven, "The Constitutional Position of the Great Lordships of South Wales," The Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Series V, Vol. VIII (1958), pp. 1-20. By Welsh law, a twysog is the holder of one or more commotes - and commotes can be taken or lost based solely on the strength of the holder. Twysog cymru thus translates as a kind of Prime Minister with far-reaching powers (primarily judicial though), but it is not a hereditary office. 'Prince' is a sloppy translation used to try and match it to a concept Anglo-Normans would understand.

As for the CoA - I'd use a red dragon passant on a white field if you want to keep to the legends, or a gold dragon passant on a white field if you want the last symbol of an independant Wales.

Been a while since I've read the law code. So I need to re-read. I'll dig out what I've got on Breton laws and see how much similarity there is although my gut instinct is that there won't be too much because the divergence happened too long before 1066.

Crusader kings/scenarios/1066_scenario_characters.inc with Wordpad
look for William (character ID 140 and give him the 'stutter' trait (stutter is made the realm duress trait in patch 1.05)

Code:
character = {
	id = { type = 10 id = 140 }
	name = "William"
	gender = male
	dynasty = { type = 12 id =752 }
	father = { type = 10 id = 252 }
	mother = { type = 10 id = 41001 }
	country = ENGL
	religion = catholic
	culture = norman
	score = { gold = 250 prestige = 100 piety = 100 }
	birthdate = { year = 1027 month = october day = 14 }
	deathdate = { year = 1087 month = september day = 9 }
	dna = "07250701023982"
	attributes = {
		martial = 7
		diplomacy = 6

		sceptical = yes
		suspicious = yes
		valorous = yes
		wise = yes
		bastard = yes
		brilliant_strategist = yes
		[B]stutter = yes[/B]
	}
}

And give duke Morcar Leofricson (character ID 5660) the intestal worm (rebel) trait

Code:
character = {
	id = { type = 10 id = 5660 }
	name = "Morcar"
	gender = male
	dynasty = { type = 12 id =560 }
	father = { type = 10 id = 5642 }
	country = CUMB
	religion = catholic
	culture = Saxon
	score = { gold = 100 prestige = 100 piety = 100 }
	birthdate = { year = 1028 month = january day = 1 }
	deathdate = { year = 1089 month = january day = 1 }
	dna = "99202459586022"
	attributes = {
		martial = 8
		diplomacy = 8
		intrigue = 5
		stewardship = 4
		health = 5
		fertility = 6
	}
	traits = {
		arbitrary = yes
		flamboyant_schemer = yes
		[B]intestinal_worm = yes[/B]
	}
}

And do the same for duke Edwin Leofricson

Code:
character = {
	id = { type = 10 id = 5644 }
	name = "Edwin"
	gender = male
	dynasty = { type = 12 id =560 }
	father = { type = 10 id = 5642 }
	country = LANC
	religion = catholic
	culture = Saxon
	score = { gold = 100 prestige = 100 piety = 100 }
	birthdate = { year = 1026 month = january day = 1 }
	deathdate = { year = 1071 month = january day = 1 }
	dna = "72626072500574"
	attributes = {
		martial = 7
		diplomacy = 5
		intrigue = 7
		stewardship = 5
		health = 7
		fertility = 4
	}
	traits = {
		selfish = yes
		wise = yes
		charismatic_negotiator = yes
		[B]intestinal_worm = yes[/B]
	}
}

then save the file again as an .inc file

First make a back up of the original though, just in case

I will read thoseto be sure! I agree the Welsh were clearly not a feudal society and mich of their law was secular in nature, but they did have a heriditary ruling class. And it seems natural that certin offices become heriditary and the responsibilities grow or contract. Princeptus did not mean heriditary prince that we know it today, so too one might see twysog change over time, from one meaning to another. Was not eldig also a word for prince? I knew it as heir.

If Breton is too far removed then we can have seperate events for them. But I do know they shared a simular bardic tradition as well as musical. Also Bretons did encourage people to take pilgramages to St. David's. I dont remember the source, but supposedly three pilgramages to St. David's was equal to one pilgramage to Jerusalem.

The events I am thinking are:

"This courtier feels compelled to take a pilgramage to St. David's in Dyfed!" with a bonus to piety.
