So, Stellaris is a pretty major departure from Paradox’s grand strategy stable – apart from the non-historical setting, this is the first time they’ve been able to use more traditional 4X tropes like random maps, small and equal starting setups, victory conditions, etc.
I’m really interested to see what the freedom from locked historical setups brings. I think the devs are having a lot of fun cooking up random events (even more random than CK2’s horse council) and the headache of balancing the game should be a lot easier for them. E.g. the current EU4 build is criticised because France usually occupies northern Iberia, and even though it makes sense in game mechanics terms, in the historical setting it feels instinctively “wrong”. Whereas on random maps with no preconceptions, there are no such “balance” problems to get in the way of the gameplay.
Paradox have already said that their intention is to cover the whole of human history with their games. I always assumed that this meant further instalments in the CK-EU-V2-HOI chain... but if Stellaris is successful, I wonder if they might try to adapt the Stellaris 4X game style to a different (i.e. historical) setting?
There are virtually no challengers to the Civilization series in the historical 4X market. Do you think the Stellaris gameplay of POPS and sectors could eventually be repurposed to a random Earth map and a Civ-like game? I know this is idle speculation, but since Crusader Kings was successfully modded to be in space, surely the reverse is possible.
