Grand Graphics Card Question Thread - pre-sales and demo only!

I think the only change has been that you would no longer need 3DAnalyze to get the game to run. The map is still unplayable unless you install a graphics mod. That only works for terrain mode though; political, religious, diplomatic, etc. modes still don't work.

For a new laptop, pretty much anything that doesn't have Intel graphics should work. Even the latest Intel graphics (GM965 or GMA X3100) should work, at least in XP. Not sure if they have a good Vista driver for it yet though.

I feel like deliberately avoiding Intel. The experience with my current laptop (purchased as a mid-range model in Nov 2005) has really left a sour taste in my mouth.

Thanks for the update. The NA version looks pretty cool and I continue to drool over the original EUIII. Still need to convince my wife (and myself) that a new computer is truly needed.

Hello everybody;
I recently bought EU3 thinking that I would be able to play it in my laptop as it had an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600-9700 SERIES which should be able to move the game. Sadly, after installing the game, although it runned, I couldn't see much of the main screen of the game as there are coloured-stripes shining all over the screen. Menus are almost unreadable, and playing it becomes crazy as I cannot see the map.
I checked I had the last drivers of my graphic card and I also downloaded v.1.3 of the game, so I guess I may lack any kind of software that solves this problem.
I'm quite ignorant about this stuff , so I will very pleased if you could explain me this in easy words.

i recently just bought the game, and honestly im not that computer savy especially with graphics cards....however I when I try restarting the game, an error message pops up and says "a 2.0 pixel shader is required" now i understand sorta what that is, but what im really wondering is if theres a way to tell if I have one, or how can i get one?....i understand if its a dumb question, but any help would be much appreciated....

I'm taking the liberty of posting this since there are currently _5_ threads on this page about this topic, of which 3 of those threads discuss the same card.

nVidia:

To run EU3 you must have AT LEAST an nVidia 5500 with 128M of RAM. However, that card is NOT recommended and will run EXTREMELY POORLY.
For best results, a 6100+ is recommended (again with 128M or more)

ATI:

Per later info, the Radeon X800GT is known to be of similiar function to the 6000 series by nVidia.

Intel:
Intel (integrated) graphics chipsets have known issues with EU3. Some people reporting playing on them with no issues, others report serious incompatibility. This is an issue with the card itself and has been noted on Intel's forum for not only EU3 but also Civ4, Halflife2, and many other games that use modern graphics code.
At this time, there is no fix for this issue.


My SUGGESTION would be to use the nVidia cards, as I've used them flawlessly for years. Cards in the 6200-6600 range should be more than adequate.

For North American users, http://www.newegg.com has versions of these cards at extremely reasonable prices. (With 1 search I just found a 6200 w/ 128 AGP slot for $40)

Edit: Now updated to _5_ threads, _3_ of them featuring the FX 5500.

I am getting an error message saying that the game requires 128mb of video memory to run.

My video card is an ATI Radeon x1300 with 256mb of memory. Is there anyway to fix this problem and get the game to run?

If you get the error message, your pixel shader isn't good enough. You need to upgrade your card to a newer model, as a pixel shader is included on the hardware of the card.

I don't know what "shadermark" is. See here for list of pixel shader versions and what graphics chips have them:

Pixel Shaders are a feature of your video card. Either your video card has Pixel Shader 2.0 (or higher) or it doesn't. If it doesn't you'll need to buy a new video card to play EU3.

I got exactly this problem. I am using a Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family.

Can I in any way play this game using that graphic card? And could I fix the problem with the ingame map config except the terrain-political etc (which doesn't change anything).

The only change for Intel graphics from the demo is that with a patched game you don't need 3DAnalyze to get it to load. There is a fix in the support forum to make the terrain mapmode playable but there is no fix to get the mapmodes other than terrain to work properly.
