Grand Graphics Card Question Thread - pre-sales and demo only!

How about a 7600GS? The one I'm considering has 256MB on the card so it should be the last card I need with this computer. I'll be buying a new machine in about 2 years I guess, so the card doesn't have to be top of the line and I don't want to spend more than $100.

My problem is very similar to Sir John's: my old GF 5200 makes pathetic performance with EUIII, however the rest of my computer, despite as old as that card, is quite good for other applications I run. I am not going to change everything today so what card is the optimal solution? I have got PIV 2.4GHz (no HT) and mainboard Assus P4P800 with AGP x8 slot...
Is GF 7600GS a good choice, or my CPU is not able to make good use of the card and it would be better to buy poorer (and cheaper) card?...

to make it simple: yes (you can go buy it now)

A GF5200 is an old card. it lacks certain technology needed for most present day cards. however a 7600GS is an excellent card (untill 2 days ago i used a 7600GT...its brilliant). and about your cpu, only intergrated cards use big portions of your cpu power. a stand alone card has its own prossesing unit and will hardly require cpu power. it will turn a bit more load on your motherboard and ram, but with a P4 board i dont see a problem there

I went and bought the 7600Gs from newegg, I hope it works. Now I need to find somebody who wants to buy a practically brand-new FX5500 to help offset the cost. Wish me luck guys.

don't feel bad, I've owned 3 cards in the past 4 weeks. A PCIE 5200, a X1000+ ATI PCIE, and now one that cannot be returned or exchanged I didn't want a 6200 PCIE.

you'll get about 35-40 bucks for that 5500 on Ebay

P.S. if anyone is interested in a 6200 PCIE LE I'll virtually give it away ROFL :rofl:

I have geforce 6200 pcie with 256 mg, it's pretty nice, eu3 is running almost smoothly, I have bought it 2 years ago though

I'm taking the liberty of posting this since there are currently _5_ threads on this page about this topic, of which 3 of those threads discuss the same card.

nVidia:

To run EU3 you must have AT LEAST an nVidia 5500 with 128M of RAM. However, that card is NOT recommended and will run EXTREMELY POORLY.
For best results, a 6100+ is recommended (again with 128M or more)

ATI:

Per later info, the Radeon X800GT is known to be of similiar function to the 6000 series by nVidia.

Intel:
Intel (integrated) graphics chipsets have known issues with EU3. Some people reporting playing on them with no issues, others report serious incompatibility. This is an issue with the card itself and has been noted on Intel's forum for not only EU3 but also Civ4, Halflife2, and many other games that use modern graphics code.
At this time, there is no fix for this issue.


My SUGGESTION would be to use the nVidia cards, as I've used them flawlessly for years. Cards in the 6200-6600 range should be more than adequate.

For North American users, http://www.newegg.com has versions of these cards at extremely reasonable prices. (With 1 search I just found a 6200 w/ 128 AGP slot for $40)

Edit: Now updated to _5_ threads, _3_ of them featuring the FX 5500.

I am trying to upgrade my Motherboard, I have researched Dell, and this may help some people with Propierty Units, some Dell MBs can be upgraded it may be cheaper and easier than buying a Video Card. So far I have found a ATIX1300 that'll go in for 88 bucks cheapest, 108 at BestBuy

I got lucky with that GEForce card PCIE, I unloaded it for 25 dollars... The PCI Bus Version costs 150!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a rip off!!!! WHY?

sounds like you have a video problem... if you were more specific maybe you'd get some help. I'm not registering EU3 till I know I'm keeping it

No, that is based on the Mobility Radeon 7500 (or M7) which is far below the minimum for EU3.
